Sweat beading up, rolling down my face, wincing in pain as my body aches, but I keep on, knowing that the past four years of my life had led to this moment. As my day trudged on things finally came to an end and I’ve achieved my goal, I received my black belt. This happened around seven years ago. Today, I’ve won many awards, including many grand championships and being ranked top ten nationally. I continue on with my adventures within karate-fueled by my passion for the sport. In order to get an understanding of what this means to me, you have to know how I got here. It all began just before kindergarten year, both of my parents worked late hours so I had to join some sort of afterschool program. Instantly, I felt as if I had done something very wrong and filled with emotion, but the class begun so there was nothing I can do about it. Later that day the, main instructor confirmed that in order to get my white belt, which I thought was something just given to you, I would need to recite the long student creed. A week later, I’d done it I got my white belt, might not seem like a huge achievement for most, but I was ecstatic, feeling like I had defied all odds. As time continued on I realized that karate was fun and that as long as I put hard work into things that I can be good at them. I especially captioned this moment when I was at a night class and I volunteered to demonstrate pushups. There was a crowd of 20 parents so I wanted to display me best, I into my pushup position and went down until my nose touched the ground and went back up. Impressed the parents cheered. “That is how to do your pushups” Mr. Manuel stated to the class of kids all under ten years old. This moment has been engraved into my memory as it is what I use whenever I am going through any tough

Minor White was an American Photographer and considered one of the most influential photographers of the post WWII era. He was not only a photographer but a teacher of the medium as well as one of the founders of Aperture Magazine which is still around today (Stamberg).
In E.B. White’s essays, “Once More to the Lake “and ‘The Ring of Time”, the author demonstrates two different interpretations of time and how it is used to symbolize meaning to each piece. “Once More to the Lake” is an essay that is derived mostly from White’s personal experience while “The Ring of Time” is mostly examining a teenage girl performing at the circus, in the eyes of someone else. Both of these articles give the reader insight of how the author uses the theme of time to show different aspects to the storyline. In White’s essays, he uses strategies that reflect on the past and foresee the future, use other individuals as vehicles to access an alternative temporality and demonstrate his own perceptions and visions in order to explore the reality or notions of time.
The workout portion was after all, the most strenuous part. The other forms and kicking combination portion was elementary memorization. Two months into training, I was extremely anxious regarding whether I would be ready for Black Belt test in time. But with Mister Alex's words of assurance I stayed headstrong and determined to pass the test. After working hard with Mister Alex as well as on my own at home for the minimum six months, Mister Alex said I was "definitely ready to take and pass the Black Belt test." When Mister Alex told me this I felt nervous about the veracity of his words. I had been in training for the minimum 6 months only. The average training period at my karate institution was actually 8 months. I felt under prepared for the test, but I was only kidding myself by undermining my
White privilege is a concept that many people are unfamiliar with, but not because they do not benefit from it. In the paper “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy McIntosh argues that white people have an advantage over those of other races, though most are completely unaware of it or simply take it for granted. Her recognition of white privilege came from the concept of male privilege. She says that she looked at that concept and realized there was certainly something similar to it in regards to race (McIntosh, 1988, 11). This paper has great importance to the function of society. Because many white people do not recognize their unfair and disproportionate advantage in society, racial tensions can rise even more because there is a major wall blocking people from fixing the current issues.
The class begins with middle punches. This entails bringing the left foot out into a sitting stance where our legs reflect a person riding a horse. The hip is rotated backwards then propelled forwards as the fist on the belt twists towards our imaginary opponent in front of us. Then Master Copper pairs each student with a partner of equal height to practice kicks. When my partner extends his sidekick, the crusty dirt on the sole of his foot brushes past my eyes, and the speed of the kick creates a breeze of stale air. In the middle of class, we incorporate the punching bags into our workout. The low belts use the tall, thin sun colored bag, and the high belts utilize the thick, blood colored bag. However, the black belts utilize “Bob the Bully”, the tan, lifelike bag with dense padding and broad shoulders. After six hours of school and at least four hours of homework, punching and kicking the toned face and rippling abs of Bob brings a substantial amount of satisfaction. As my knuckles make contact with Bob’s rigid jaw, I grit my teeth and each blow connects with more power than the last. Beads of sweat roll down my face as Bob’s head shifts from side to side following each blast of force. The instep of my foot creates indents in the sides of Bob as my half turning kicks
Going to class everyday without fail, reviewing and completely perfecting the five years of curriculum I had so carefully worked through, to the point where everything was completely automatic, and preparing for the fifty push-up requirement, were not enough. The black-belt test requires creativity through my creation of a personal kata and a self-defense to every attack I had learned. Beyond this, physical endurance and stamina are required in order to spar for ten minutes straight at the end of the four hour test, with a fresh opponent every minute. When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
When we first arrived I’d thought we’d taken a wrong turn and went to a traveling gypsy convention by mistake. The whole field outside the school was filled with tents of various sizes and colors. 200 wrestlers, about thirty of which were girls, filtered about the area. As my soon-to-be teammates and I headed to the first practice, anxiety gnawed at my stomach like a dog with a bone (FL). I wanted to impress everybody, and prove that I could make it in this sport. Before we started, the coach patted me on the shoulder. “I’ve got your back all right.” he told me. I smiled and nodded. At least one person was looking out for me.
White privilege are privileges that are given to white people who they do not earn, it 's an asset they get; on daily basis just because of their skin color.; White. Peggy McIntosh describes the white privilege as "an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, code-books, visas, clothes, tools and blank checks (McIntosh 1988, p175).” I believe that the white privilege is the same as racism because the word white privilege itself explains it. It is privilege given and offered towards only the white people. If someone is given a special privilege because they are white then that is racism.
The term “White Privilege” has been a term that’s been used a lot not only by me but by a lot of individuals around me. It’s such a controversial word that has a long history. Whenever I hear this word used against someone else who is white that individual usually denies that they have white privilege at all and usually end up telling me about how they make the same amount as me and everyone else or they make less than other people who are also white. They bring up how there are poor whites and how they work for everything they have. However, i’m always confused why anyone who was white can’t just admit that they have this privilege that automatically puts them higher up than others when it comes to opportunities. When John Howard Griffin released the book Black Like Me he knowingly or accidentally shined a massive flood light upon the racist element of the United States. He showed the country and the world that racism was alive and well and running rampant across the Southern States. Upon its release a fire storm hit. Hell, even before the book came out Griffin was the subject of verbal attacks and threats. It certainly hit a nerve with a lot of Americans.
Ever since the previous season I had my standards set high. I had placed fifth, which was all right for the time being, but I knew as time went on I needed to push myself and increase my level of wrestling. I decided that I would do whatever it took, through thick and thin. I traveled to small local tournaments in Colorado, and a couple out-of-state tournaments, I even traveled to Delaware. It didn't really matter how I did at these tournaments because it was just all practice until February. So, I lifted and wrestled just about every chance I got. It was all in preparation for one match, six minutes.
