The transition between high school writing and college writing marked a difficult time for me. In high school, I never had the motivation required to develop my writing skills and writing essays was not my forte. I would express my jumbled thoughts on a paper and turn them in for a decent grade. Upon coming into English 1101 with this lax mindset, I immediately encountered many weaknesses in my writing, struggling with constructing an essay with a proper direction, style and grammar. As I began reviewing my problems, I started understanding these issues and eventually learned to improve upon them. From my portfolio, I hope to demonstrate my improvement upon these weaknesses in English 1101. One of my main weaknesses in my writing was developing a strong introduction, particularly the thesis. English 1101 helped me realize that my thesis statements were too vague and never clearly answered the prompt. In the first essay of the process exhibit, I first started writing about the picture’s elements. My initial thesis started off as “At the instance of a click, the essence of a person can be described by the many pixels printed.” The assignment required that I describe my relationship with the people in the picture. Before coming into English 1101, I was pretty confident in my grammar abilities. However, during the beginning of the semester, I failed to spot some simple grammar mistakes due to my carelessness which significantly hurt the essay’s legitimacy. I learned to spend more time editing my papers with more cautiousness of these errors. Peer editing other classmates’ paper helped me learn about my own mistakes, because I learned to spend more time on it, providing more insightful feedback. The peer review exhibit demonstrates my growth on finding these errors. After identifying the errors, I gave the author suggestions to how she could improve her
For my Final Reflection Essay I attempted to focus on the most obvious adjustments I made from writing high school papers to producing college level essays. This approach compelled me to examine a few of the papers I submitted in high school and look back on the steps I took to write them. By reviewing my previous work I realized that during Dr. Kennedys English 111 class I have effectively learned how to apply an outline, utilize research, and incorporate that research into my final paper. English 111 has helped me to understand the importance of the multiple steps of writing a great college level essay by forcing me to complete each step individually. My overall performance in this class has been above average and I have really demonstrated dedication to improvement.
This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities. I learned to create good ideas and responses, and while I did possess the ability to convey them with proficiency, I could not express myself at a college level. Nonetheless, I can happily report that I have acquired these skills throughout English 101, learning to curb my near addiction to prepositional phrases, in addition to halting my use of coordinating conjunctions to begin sentences. I find it pleasing to read and compare my first essay to my latest one, seeing all of the differences and enhancements. My writing has improved through the trials of in-depth analyses and short deadlines, enabling me to perform my best no matter the style or topic. I improved on many aspects of my writing throughout the duration of this class, but there are still some things I need to refine. Over the course my writing skills have gotten better due to the instructor’s feedback, peer reviews, and just me learning. I enjoyed peer reviews because sometimes it is easier to relate to someone my own age. The overall structure and flow of my essays have improved, as well as the use of word choice and quotations. Throughout this course, I was able to apply critical thinking and reading skills to different texts, compose essays with appropriate content development and organization, use correct style by practicing the steps of the writing process, and reflect on my own development as a writer. Every English 111 textbook should consist of three main things: the proper way to write an academic essay, review of proper grammar, mechanics word usage and a short transition chapter of the difference between writing in high school and college writing. Successful College Writing by Kathleen T. McWhorter has many of the essentials but noticed it lacked examples of a noble essay. All throughout class students critiqued essays but never actually saw an example of a good, noteworthy complete essay. Having examples of what a person shouldn’t do in an essay is always beneficial but should be followed by a precise academic essay. How are the student supposed to improve their academic writing skills if they have nothing to go by? Just because the book lacks a few of the basic essentials doesn’t mean the book itself will not be beneficial in any way. The book as a whole is pleasing but still has room for revisions.
Everybody has weaknesses, and no one can deny that. Some people are jealous, some have bad habits they need to break, and some are over-nice (but in the bad way). Mine happens to be the third one in that list. In multiple situations, I have been too nice to the point where it hurts me and makes me miserable. Where this weakness is the worst is definitely in relationships: both romantic and friendships. My personal weakness of being too nice isolates me from being happy for myself in the same way as Hester’s sin isolated her from the Puritan community in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Paul declares in 1st Corinthians that to each of God’s children a spiritual gift has been given. Over the years of my walk with the Lord I have concluded that I possess the noticeable gift of speaking in tongues and perhaps the gift of discerning spirits. As we have been learning about our proclivities towards certain strengths, I have been thinking about different ways mine are useful in and for the Church. I constantly took all of the criticism that I received from my English instructor and applied these things to the next paper so that I could learn from it and do better than before. Everything that I learned in this course I will be able to use in future courses because eventually I am going to have to write other essays or even lab reports. I can also apply what I learned to my future career because I will have to communicate with my co-workers through business emails, which will require good sentence structure and proper grammar. During the course first semester of freshman year in English 101, I have learned multiple foundations when it comes to writing. When I first entered college, the only knowledge when it comes to writing was gathering a bunch of information on a piece of paper. Reflecting upon my experience of taking English Composition I, I have realized that the course is an excellent choice for high school seniors, such as myself, who wish to take an extra step towards success in college. During this course, I have learned many writing skills that will be beneficial for me throughout the rest of my college career. I have met my personal goals for this class to maintain an "A" average and gain college credit. Throughout this course, I have learned the fundamentals of properly writing essays, such as an ad analysis, a comparative analysis, a narrative, and an argumentative essay.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
Before coming to this class, I lived in a fictional land where I envisioned myself as a phenomenal writer and believed all my work to be virtually flawless. As you could imagine, I received a rude awakening within the first few weeks of the school year. To think that I couldn’t turn in a rough draft and receive one of the highest scores in the classroom was preposterous! Although I no longer have the fantasy of thinking my work is perfection, I can say that I have learned a great deal and improved tremendously within these first few months of English 111. For example, understanding the writing process and how to set up a paper has had a terrific influence in my writing. With the help of understanding the writing process more in depth, being able to recognize and correct my most common errors, and setting goals in writing for myself- I have had the chance of improving my writing and knowledge of it.
English 1 has been the most challenging class in my academic experience so far. The reason behind this class being so challenging is that writing has been and it still is a very hard task for me. Although I have had numerous difficulties in this class, I believe that within the past 16 weeks I have improved significantly as a writer and have become more comfortable with evaluating college-level texts.
As I approached the second semester of my freshman year at Meredith College, I was actually quite hesitant regarding the fact that I was enrolled in my first college English class. All while I was growing up, I have always possessed a love for reading and writing. English soon became my favorite subject, and I absolutely loved expressing myself through my assignments and papers. However, as I became older, my love for the subject of English slowly deteriorated, as my previous English teachers drove my passion down. Naturally, I had no idea what to expect walking into my English 111 class, but after completing the class, I am so elated to say that my passion for writing has increased dramatically.
