My Weaknesses

The transition between high school writing and college writing marked a difficult time for me. In high school, I never had the motivation required to develop my writing skills and writing essays was not my forte. I would express my jumbled thoughts on a paper and turn them in for a decent grade. Upon coming into English 1101 with this lax mindset, I immediately encountered many weaknesses in my writing, struggling with constructing an essay with a proper direction, style and grammar. As I began reviewing my problems, I started understanding these issues and eventually learned to improve upon them. From my portfolio, I hope to demonstrate my improvement upon these weaknesses in English 1101. One of my main weaknesses in my writing was developing a strong introduction, particularly the thesis. English 1101 helped me realize that my thesis statements were too vague and never clearly answered the prompt. In the first essay of the process exhibit, I first started writing about the picture’s elements. My initial thesis started off as “At the instance of a click, the essence of a person can be described by the many pixels printed.” The assignment required that I describe my relationship with the people in the picture. Before coming into English 1101, I was pretty confident in my grammar abilities. However, during the beginning of the semester, I failed to spot some simple grammar mistakes due to my carelessness which significantly hurt the essay’s legitimacy. I learned to spend more time editing my papers with more cautiousness of these errors. Peer editing other classmates’ paper helped me learn about my own mistakes, because I learned to spend more time on it, providing more insightful feedback.
