Reflecting upon my experience of taking English Composition I, I have realized that the course is an excellent choice for high school seniors, such as myself, who wish to take an extra step towards success in college. During this course, I have learned many writing skills that will be beneficial for me throughout the rest of my college career. I have met my personal goals for this class to maintain an "A" average and gain college credit. Throughout this course, I have learned the fundamentals of properly writing essays, such as an ad analysis, a comparative analysis, a narrative, and an argumentative essay.
The first essay that I was assigned was an ad analysis. In this essay, I was instructed to analyze a magazine advertisement and give a
Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
Seventeen Magazine, a popular magazine amongst young females, contains the latest gossip, beauty and fashion tips and many different advertisements. The first advertisement featured in Seventeen is for Maybelline’s new Falsies Push Up Drama mascara. Maybelline, a once small family oriented business, now reigns as one of the largest makeup businesses in America. Maybelline’s main focus is to draw the attention of women towards their product so that they may feel confident, explore new looks and flaunt their own individuality and creativity. The advertisement for Maybelline’s new product provides a bold, eye-catching look on model Gigi Hadid, creative text and a vague claim which leaves the audience wanting to learn more about the product. In
This advertisement is appealing to woman interested in buying perfume. Even if the buyer is not interested in perfume this ad makes you think that you need this particular perfume. The ad is very convincing and very well displayed. The company producing this advertisement has successfully caused the viewer or consumer to think twice when they see this ad and want to buy the product. This is what makes for a good magazine advertisement.
English Composition II has unexpectedly improved my writing into an academic level. As I studied various English reading and writing courses, this class “English Composition II” did not immediately caught my eye. However as I researched about the concepts of this class, the decision to make was not so difficult since I was lacking in critical thinking and the interpretation of works. Also as a Business Major, it made sense that the subject of English would be of interest to me and as a career requirement. During the first weeks, I thought that I would be fully prepared for this course after taking an accelerated course in English during the spring semester. However, after attending class for about a month, I certainly did not expect to learn an entirely new process of writing
Gender stereotypes and roles have long been an issue within society. Today, people believe that gender stereotypes no longer exist, however, these preconceptions of desired gender attributes and roles strongly remain. Old Spice, a company producing men’s hygienic products, is known for its comedic advertising campaigns, focusing on references to traditionally desired masculine characteristics. Using gender stereotypes, they connect with the audience’s emotions and desires through humor and sex appeal, in order to convince them to buy Old Spice body wash. The Old Spice ad, “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” represents a clear demonstration of gender stereotypes, roles and the resulting issues of sexism and inequality in society, with an
When it came time to meet with Dr. Amy Pardo for an individual meeting, we sat and mapped out the plan for the semester in English Composition II. Before enrolling into English Composition II, it was scared because it might have ended up being like English Composition I where the professor expressed that I did not write very well. After writing a paper for Dr. Pardo and receiving her critique back on it, she said the writing skills were excellent, but work needs to be done to a few things. During the individual meeting, we figured out work need to be done as far as grammar, punctuation, and structure, but the critical thinking and sentence formation are excellent. By evaluating the summary, rhetorical analysis, critique, and research paper, the strengths and weaknesses vary throughout all of the essays.
Solo’s advertisement for the “Thirst crusher” solo lemon drink try and use exaggeration like when the “Solo man” catches the barrel that is going over the edge is so not realistic, Solo want you to buy their product so that you can crush your thirst.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
Maclean’s is a Canadian news magazine established in 1905 by John Bayne Maclean. Distributed weekly, it is Canada’s only national current affairs magazine; it covers such matters as politics, international affairs, social issues, business and culture. On average, the magazine circulates 366,394 issues per week and has a readership of 2,753,000. 51% of readers are men and 49% are women, with an average age of 45 years old.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
In today’s society, more than ever there is a great importance placed on beauty. In fact beauty is often associated with self worth, especially among women. This idea that beauty is more important than anything else is prominent in the media, specifically advertisements. Advertisements present ideas of beauty that women think they must conform to in order to be beautiful. This essay will analyze two advertisements from the winter 2016 issue of Fashion Magazine. Both advertisements present very different ideas of beauty. The Erin Tracey ad reproduces the dominant ideologies of beauty, which are traditionally white and thin beautiful women. On the other hand the Special K advertisement challenges these hegemonic
Some forms of traditional advertising, like newspaper ads, have been around for over a hundred years. Advertising on other traditional media, like radio and television, became common in the 1960s. In the last 50+ years, tradition advertising has become the standard tactic by which most businesses engage with their audiences.
Advertising effectiveness refer to the changes that advertising causes in the mental or physical state or activities of the recipient of an ad (Jellis Gerard).
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
I am writing to explain how I have reached one of the learning outcomes for English Composition I. The course has been a great help in becoming a better critical thinker. After completing the course, I can successfully analyze rhetorical situations and make effective choices based on audience, context, purpose, and genre.
