An immigrant with a weird accent and average writing skills- that's how I felt myself three months ago. After two years of no school and no homework, going back to college was a big challenge for me, especially because everything was new: new education system, new teachers with different ways of teaching, online homework and almost two hours lectures. I am happy that I am here now and I did not get scared and gave up, but on the contrary, I have achieved benefits for my everyday life- professionally, educationally and personally. I have practiced academic writing in other languages, but never in English and my purpose for this class was to become a confident and meaningful writer. During my English class, I have accomplished a variety of goals
When writing a five paragraph essay, there are five steps one must fallow in order to attain perfection, these steps include understanding the question, brainstorming, writing a rough copy, revising, and creating a final draft. The first and most important step is understanding the topic. The topic of the essay is what the essay will be about and if this is misunderstood, the whole essay will be off course. The second step, brainstorming, will help organize thoughts and ideas so they flow amiably. There are many different ways to brainstorm, some of the most helpful are making a web of ideas, making a list of ideas, or creating a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the conviction. All these ideas will be related to the topic at hand. For example, if the essays topic is about how the earth is affected by global warming, then the brainstorming ideas might include the ozone lair being reduced or how global climate has raised. The third step when writing a five paragraph essay is creating the rough draft. The first draft must have all the features the final will, but does not have to be...
Affected by my family, my background, and everything around me, I was born in a family who is the first generation to get here. My grandmother, and my parents, along with some other relatives, moved here in search of better opportunities, like those from other countries for the same idea. They started out fresh but had a hard time to get started, when I was little, I assumed it had to be somewhat easy, but for people who do not know English it is like starting from scratch, but they did well, they’ve made it.
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.
Although I know there is still much to improve on in my writing, I feel as though I have made tremendous strides for my first semester. I have grown as a writer, and I believe I have the potential to be a great writer. Throughout my many years left here at The College of New Rochelle, I will continue to work hard so that my final year here at the college I can look back at my writings from freshman year to see my improvement. Writing 101 has boosted my confidence and has made me a better writer today. I will take this confidence along with determination to my writing 102 class, and I hope the professor will continue the molding process that Professor smart has started.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
My progression as a writer has steadily improved over the past semester. Expanding sentence variety and experiencing in-class discussion has elevated my writing style to another level. I have learned how to successfully attack time management issues head on and how to research effectively. My ability to present information in a logical and organized fashion has reached new heights and my punctuation has become much better. I have improved upon areas that I was already competent in while addressing the weaker aspects of my writing. This class has been an invaluable learning experience that granted me many opportunities to become a masterful writer. One of those opportunities was the persuasive paper assignment.
Although I was born as an American Citizen, I started living in this country on July 26th, 2010. For personal reasons I had to stay in Tijuana, Mexico for almost 16 years. However, my situation on the arrival was not very different from many of the young immigrants that as me, they started school with little or any knowledge of English. I still remember my first day of high school with chills, imagine being dropped completely alone on your first day of school without knowing anyone, people rushing to their respective classrooms as the bell rings and you end up alone in the hallway without any idea where to go, a totally different place with enough hallways for the you to get lost, nothing you have ever seen before, and worse still you don’t speak their language, therefore you are afraid to ask for an orientation. Then you suddenly have a feeling of helplessness, loneliness and depression knowing for sure, that it will be a long year for you. As me, hundreds of students leave their home country ...
My experience with writing in English class has mainly been a good one. Since I began writing essays in Elementary school I have been a decent writer. I am always working on my writing skills to become a better writer; there will always be room for improvement. Every English class I have taken has taught me new techniques, which helped to strengthen my previous writing abilities, as well as hone newly learned skills. Some of the aspects of my writing experience that I am going to write about are my favorite kind of writing assignments, my least favorite kind of writing assignments, my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and my expectations for Freshman English.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
This class has been significantly more difficult than any other English class I have taken all throughout high school. This semester, I have been introduced to different styles of writing that I have never been exposed to before. This class has been stressful, but also fun. With using all of the resources I have been given throughout the semester, I have been able to do my best to further my writing abilities and hopefully only continue to grow them as I finish my later years in college. Throughout this essay, I will discuss my failures, my successes, my overall performance in the class, and my skill development skills.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Now I understand the writing process and
Being a good writer can take a lot of hard work and constant practice. A good writer must know what he/she are talking about in their text. Writing should come easy to someone that is a good writer, they have the ability to use any of the different techniques or writing strategies. Writers must find out their style is like first, that way they may perfect that style and continue to write good papers. A good writer will organize their writing and make sure that the strategy they use in their paper makes the purpose of their writing clear, logical, and effective. Stephen King makes it simple when explaining how to be a good writer. In his “Reading to Write” paper Stephen King says “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all
Five years ago, my mom took me to the United States all the way from the Philippines to live a better life. Coming here was new to me; the language, people, and culture. It took me quite awhile to adjust to everything. I came here not being able to speak, read, and write English fluently. Living here has been good and rough at the same time. I overcame many obstacles that shape me to the person I am now.
Being in English 5 class I learned many ways to start and finish my writing academically. Out of all the things I learned there were six main goals that I was supposed to concentrate on the most, and they are: to help students understand the ways that readers read and write in and beyond the university, to understand the writing process of reading, writing, and research, help students develop a metacognitive understanding of the process of the process of reading, writing , and thinking, to understand textual conventions, help students understand and engage in reading and writings communal processes, and lastly to help students think critically about academic discourse communities as contact zones where different cultures both connect and cone into conflict. I will be reflecting on my essays, and group activities that helped me achieve the six goals. I feel like I am an improved writer since the beginning of the semester. I feel that some of the writing assignments helped me improve my writing skills. In my cover letter I will be talking about my past writing assignments; Why I Write and my Rhetorical Analysis as well as the annotated
