Since I am just under the age of 30, I asked one of my siblings’ questions pertaining to vocational goals. When shown John Holland's six-part diagram, my sister said that her vocational preference is and has always been social. My sister has always been interested in coaching, teaching, mentoring, and helping others. As a young adult, she wanted to become and Respiratory Therapist; she immediately started attending college after high school to pursue her goals of becoming a Respiratory Therapist. Unfortunately, my sister was never able to achieve her goal of becoming a respiratory therapist. Although my sister started college as soon as she graduated high school; she also started working warehouse type jobs before she graduated high school …show more content…
My sister has settled with her current job and doesn't plan on changing because it will ruin her retirement benefits; although she is extremely unhappy and stressed over her current job. There were many barriers that have prevented her from achieving her goals: school, work, money, time. Time and money have a big impact on achieving your goals; you must work so you have money to pay for school, but when you work you don't have the time to study. My sister has been working in a warehouse since she was 16 years old, and has worked in 3 different warehouses. As previous stated, after graduation, she started college right away while working full time. Since she was working full time, she was unable to focus on studying and was struggling with her classes. She attempted to get help with her school work, but her instructors were not very helpful and told her to go look in the mirror because that is the only person who could help her. She became discouraged from pursuing her career and focused on working. My sister chose her current vocation because it was easy for her to get into and she needed to work; plus, the pay was decent and they offered good retirement and benefit

As a result, Julia’s perceptions of occupational challenges do not reflect her occupational environment’s demands for mastery. Consequently, Julia has developed a smaller repertoire of occupational responses. The lack of sufficient repertoire of occupational responses is affecting her engagement in occupations and the availability of occupations in play, leisure, and education contexts. She prefers stereotyped play, has very few leisure activities and social interactions. Therefore, she receives fewer opportunities for occupational adaptation and experiencing relative
Peter Tkach was enrolling for classes his last semester of his third year at Willamette University. He had done well throughout his educational career, matured through personal experiences, but he soon realized that his four years of college were coming to an end soon and that he needed to determine what he would be doing for the rest of his life, or at least post graduation. Peter decided to enroll in Dr. Houser’s Theories of Career Development in hope of discovering a career path that suited his formal education. Throughout the class he was exposed to Trait-Factor Theory, Personality Theory, Developmental Theory, and Social Learning Theory. He received great career lessons from The Adventures of Johnny Bunko, which he later applied into looking for an internship and career. Peter was able to use these theories and concepts to his own life through completing the assignments and by the end of the class, he was no longer lost in search of a career path, but had a career he wanted to pursue and got an internship for the following summer.

Application of career theories to my own life allows for analyzing past and future career decisions. Holland’s Theory of Careers states that one’s vocation is an expression of self, personality, and way of life. There is an indisputable and fundamental difference in the quality of life one experiences if they choose a career one truly enjoys, versus choosing a career one detests. A true testament to the validity of Holland’s theory, my job/career choices reflect my interests, as well as the evolution of my personality (internal self). My first job as a fine jewelry specialist and second job as a make-up artist echo my love of the fashion world. As I matured and became less fascinated by presumed “glamour” careers, I became captivated by physical fitness, nutrition, and medicine; I received my national fitness trainer certificate so that I may become a personal trainer. Nevertheless, my career decisions do not fit uniformly into merely one career theory.

In the reading “Who Goes to College” written by Cecilia Rodriguez Milanes I was able to see myself in her situation. When she was a senior she had no idea what she was going to do her following year, all she knew was that her parents wanted her to attend college. She always wanted to work, she liked being able to provide for herself but her parents always told her that college would come first. She had no clue of how college worked, what classes she would take or what she would do there. After all the confusion she had of what college truly is, she began to love it. I believe that Cecilia Rodriguez chose the right path, even though she was not completely sure of what she wanted to do she always worked hard and never let any obstacle put her
College has a extensive impact on a person that some people simply don’t realize. When I first started college, I was a little close-minded and unsure about what it was I wanted to do with the rest of my life. When I was halfway through my freshman year, I decided to completely change my path in life. I left ECU, moved into an apartment, transferred to Pitt and declared my major intended sonography. Then suddenly I hated what I was doing, I had to take a step back and truly evaluate my life and what it was I was meant to do. I was completely lost. Then one day I received a text from a friend telling me to apply to a hospital located in Chesapeake, Virginia. I did, and I got the job. When I told my parents they were less than thrilled, they didn’t like the idea of me taking a year off from school to work, but I thought long and hard about what was best for me and decided it was something I was meant to do, it was the path I needed to follow. I worked for a year while living at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. I was completely independent, providing for myself 100 percent. While working this job, I realized that what I wanted to do and what I was called to do in life was become a nurse, which is something I would have never figured out had I not seriously weighed my options
Rising mostly through self-efficacy and outcome expectations, career-related interests foster educational and occupational choice goals (Bandura, 1997). Especially to the extent that they are clear, specific, strongly held, stated publicly, and supported by significant others, choice goals make it more likely that people will take actions to achieve their goals (Lent, Hackett, Brown, 1999). Their subsequent performance attainments provide valuable feedback that can strengthen or
Growing up, her hopes and dreams for the future were to be a teacher until she realized the schooling involved, and then she didn’t want to do it. Over time her hopes and dreams changed when she went to work instead of school. She worked in two different industries and there was a time she regretted it and wished she had gone to school instead. But she was in a rush to grow up, and thinking back on it now that she has been working since 17, she wishes she could’ve gone back to school to figure out a career. Other than her dreams career wise, she has always wanted to be a mom like her own.
What is a leader? A leader is a person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. A leader is someone who is very passionate about a cause or purpose. Mother Teresa is a role model for Catholic's everywhere; she founded the Missionaries of Charity, she is recognized for her international charity, and she also has a very large legacy.
As I am preparing for a new chapter in my life, I have put a lot thought in about what I want out of life and what to look forward to as I get older. In order for one to achieve anything, they need to set goals to reach for. I have a handful of goals for my future, short term and long term, that I will actively work towards in my college years and beyond. In my time at UW Eau Claire, I plan to be involved and engaged in student activities on campus. Being active will help me meet new people, build a better resume, and have fun at college. At UWEC, I would like to get involved in anything musical, along with various clubs and Greek life. Similarly, another goal of mine is to have a job on campus. Having a job will not only help me make some
I have a lot of confidence in succeeding in both my small and large goals, especially after learning how much my personality traits are inclined with my current major and my career goals. The personality tests I have taken confirmed to me that I have found a career path that I truly enjoy and that I know I will be able to succeed in. After struggling the first time I attended college, in major I was not suited for, I failed. Now that I have taken on a major that I deeply care about, the work load does not seem as overwhelming. It proves that when you care about something, it is much easier to continue and succeed. Now that I not only have a strong desire to accomplish my goals, but also a strong action plan to achieve them, I feel that there is nothing holding me back from achieving even the biggest goals I have for myself.
