What is a leader? A leader is a person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. A leader is someone who is very passionate about a cause or purpose. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, more commonly known as Mother Teresa, is a very influential leader. Mother Teresa is a role model for Catholic's everywhere; she founded the Missionaries of Charity, she is recognized for her international charity, and she also has a very large legacy. Anjezë Gonxhe was born on August 26, 1910 in Skopje, now capital of Macedonia. When she was young, Agnes was interested by stories of missionaries and their service, and by age 12 had become convinced that she wanted to commit her life to religion.. Its mission was to care for, "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone." It began with 13 members and by 1997 it had grown to more than 4,000 sisters. The sisters ran orphanages, AIDS hospices and charity centers worldwide, and cared for refugees, the blind, disabled, aged, alcoholics, the poor and homeless, and victims of floods, epidemics, and famine. The congregation soon began to attract both people and charitable donations, and by the 1960s had opened hospices, orphanages and leper houses all over India. Mother Teresa then expanded the congregation throughout the globe. It's first house outside India opened in Venezuela in 1965 with five sisters. More were later formed in Rome, Tanzania, and Austria in 1968. During the 1970s the congregation opened houses and foundations in many countries including Asia, Africa, Europe and the United States. By 2007 the Missionaries of Charity numbered approximately 5,000 sisters worldwide, working 600 missions, schools and shelters in 120 countries.
