To most people not much to happen in 10 seconds but when it comes to roping calves 10 seconds is a lifetime. In that 10 seconds it feels like everything can go right or everything can go wrong. If everything goes right in that time then when 10 seconds comes the time could have already stopped and you already be back on your horse. If everything goes wrong in those 10 seconds then you could still be hung up in your rope or something else could go wrong and 10 seconds can not even be half the time it takes you to rope flank and tie. One of my most memorable experience of roping is a day i roped well but what happened is what made me remember it so bad. I had roped for a couple hours and had roped well. I roped a calf and was really fast i
The first virtue that can be obtained through the world wide sport of rodeo is patience. Because of the fact that rodeo is such a big sport, there are many competitors. With this in mind and the fact that events take more than a few mere seconds, rodeos can be an all day event. In a high school rodeo in Laramie this spring, there were nearly 200 runs or rides being made throughout the course of just one day. So you can imagine the...
What’s 10th? It’s moving from start to finish in 4 minutes 37 seconds, while others took anywhere from 4 minutes 29 seconds to 6 minutes 2 second. It’s qualifying.
Then, high school came along and I received a rude awakening that I was no longer top dog on the wrestling team. I lost more matches that first year of highschool wrestling then I had my whole junior high career combined. I was devastated that year I thought that I would never want to wrestle again. However, when wrestling rolled around that next year I was the first in line to show
It’s 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Jake and I are headed down the longest stretch of road in Texas. We have just pulled out of El Paso and are on the way to Fredericksburg to participate in the Frontier Days Rodeo. We were fortunate to have put together a decent run on our last draw and win enough day-money to keep us going for a while. Jake and I are rodeo-bums, to be specific, calf ropers. I am the one who tries to throw the loop of a rope around a calf’s neck and Jake is my partner, the best roping horse a cowboy ever mounted. By the way, how many understand the art of calf roping? I thought so. Let me walk through the steps of what it takes to put together that perfect run, not that I can do it that often.
I took a deep breath as I walked my horse into the Greeley Stampede Arena. I told myself just to "relax." I loped a circle around the arena to make sure that my horse was warmed up and ready to go. He was ready but I was starting to get nervous. I stopped in front of the roping box to put my piggin' string in my mouth. I looked at my calf in the chute to make sure that it was number 33, which was one of the best calves out of the whole set. It was, and I was ready to ride into the box and rope my calf, or attempt to rope my calf. I began to get more nervous, more nervous than I ever had been at a rodeo.
Everything about going to this rodeo was fantastic: the food, the fun, most of all, the rodeo grounds. The place that I fit in was in the stands of the arena. Sitting there for four days got a little old, and, going on the fifth day, I was a little tired. Nevertheless, tired or not, this was what I had been looking forward to--the Short Go. This is the round in a rodeo when the top 15 from each event compete for the title of State Champion.
As Albert Einstein once stated, “ Anyone who has never made a mistake in life has never tried anything new.” As a way to expand my horizons, I, Edwin Montalvo, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s pentathlon team. Based on my background knowledge on pentathlon, the use of additional information on various subjects is always essential towards the academic learning. Because of this, I also strive to excel in all my classes, for it is a necessary component of a student and a pentathlete. In addition to knowing background information, I vary my time between academic education and physical education, creating a more balanced lifestyle for me. Furthermore, pentathlon brings a self-learning experience that contributes towards many essential attributes needed in the future, such as
My first high school practice was terrible. The one thing I hated was the head gear straps, which made my head hurt. The first couple of practices I got my butt kicked by the upper classmen who had much more wrestling experience than I have ever had. Everyone in my weight class of 160 pounds was tough and had a lot of experience. I was the only JV in my weight class. I learned a lot from the senior wrestlers and got better by wrestling with them, and learning from them. After many practices, I was finally ready to wrestle in a meet and put my wrestling skills to the test. I was nervous and actually a little scared, because it was my very first high school meet. It was also mostly varsity wrestlers who had attended the
As I arrived in the wrestling room, everyone was optimistic and talking about the varsity wrestlers from Katella high. I was nervous thinking about the all the people that were going to see me wrestle including my parents. After we were all seated the coaches announced that there would be a wrestle off for the varsity 126 lbs spot. I was my first year of wrestling and as I saw to varsity wrestlers wrestle in a high intensity match it was overwhelming and I thought to myself if I was ready for my first match.
When I was small my dad would always tell me stories of him drag racing, and how fast his old Chevelle was. Unfortunately, I wasn’t born at the time he had it. Drag racing is a huge part of American history, it dates all the way back to around the late 1940s and early 50s. After World War 2 drag racing became very popular among the American people. It mostly started on dry lake beds around the country, this gave the cars they were using enough room to get up to speed. Just like how NASCAR was created from bootleggers drag racing had a little part in this. They increased the power of their cars in order to outrun the cops. This got people thinking; around 1950 the first drag strip was opened. It was called the Santa Ana drag strip; it was created from an old air field where they used the runway as a strip. In 1951 the NHRA was created, the national hot rod association. This caused drag racing to grow to a whole different level. Many people started going out to the track to see what their hot rods could do. As time passed top fuel became a popular spectator sport and many big companies’ like coca cola started to sponsor different teams from top fuel. This sport has had a huge
The American Parkour Academy refers to bodily movement as fun and joyful. This is an essential feature to communicate in the promotion of physical activity. Parkour is interesting for physical activity in the city, because it uses obstacles in the built environment to exercise.
The best memory I have of me doing something reckless would have to be when I was in the 5th grade. The 5th grade was an interesting year as it was the year I started to experiment with my lifestyle and try new things. This was a the time in my life I was really into WWE, also known as World Wrestling Entertainment. I lived to see the Friday Night Smackdown special fight every friday, and sometimes I pretend I was my favored high flyer werster at the time; Jeff Hardy. His character on WWE was one I adored. Women loved him, men wanted to be him, and he was a fearless man. Jeff would jump from heights no one else would imagine of jumping, and he was adored by many for that. And at the moment, little Antenhe Tena wanted to be him, Everything from

As I strap on my binding, I realize how simple it is to feel so happy over the smallest thing. With one foot strapped down, I skate over to the chairlift ready to head up the biggest mountain I have ever laid my eyes upon. I doubt myself if I am ready to take on this big monster but all I can hear is my dad talking about how he hopes his knee will not give out. It is our turn to get on the chairlift I cannot believe I am about to go 9,000 feet above sea level. The ride up the mountain was longer than I expect which made me even more nervous. The snow seemed to go on for miles not just stop at the end of the ski hill drive like back in Wisconsin. I was trying to take in all the beautiful scenery while my heart was pounding very hard. When I got off of the chairlift I was in awe. I mean isn’t that how you are supposed to feel when you are on the top of the world? Little ol’ midwest Wisconsin ski hills definitely did not prepare me for this. This run was pretty steep, steeper than I thought. But I did not let that affect my confidence in myself that I had before. Everything I have ever snowboarded before was nothing like this.
I almost fell off a cliff on the side of a mountain. I was in Pitkin, Colorado, on a camping trip during the summer of 2009. The trees were green, the air was fresh so were the lakes, rivers, and ponds were stocked with fish and wildlife was everywhere. Usually, on these camping trips, I would be accompanied by a large number of people. However, this time, it was just my parents, my three brothers, and my two sisters. I was almost 12 years old at the time and having three older brothers made me very competitive. Naturally, when my family decided to climb one of the mountain’s which were around us, I wanted to be the first one to reach its peak.
