I almost fell off a cliff on the side of a mountain. I was in Pitkin, Colorado, on a camping trip during the summer of 2009. The trees were green, the air was fresh so were the lakes, rivers, and ponds were stocked with fish and wildlife was everywhere. Usually, on these camping trips, I would be accompanied by a large number of people. However, this time, it was just my parents, my three brothers, and my two sisters. I was almost 12 years old at the time and having three older brothers made me very competitive. Naturally, when my family decided to climb one of the mountain’s which were around us, I wanted to be the first one to reach its peak. After the first day of setting up camp, going fishing and doing all sorts of other activities, we started to prepare for hiking up the mountain the next day. Climbing the mountain was nothing new for us, we have gone up the same mountain every year we habe been camping in Pitkin. The following morning was perfect, there was almost no wind, a few clouds, and a good temperature. I was feeling great and looking …show more content…
Terrified, looking back toward the edge of the cliff, I was less than two yards from falling over the edge, less than two yards from being seriously injured or even dead. Needless to say, after that, I took it very slow afterwards and made sure every step I took was solid. We eventually made it to the top just before my other siblings arrived. It’s fairly easy for me to go charging into something without thinking about my actions or the consequences. I have found that it is much more difficult to stop, consider the options and find all of the facts. Patience’s is not an easy thing to put into practice, it is something that takes time. Over time I grew more patient and more understanding of situations and people, which has helped me in both my job and in my everyday
In today’s society, isolation often becomes both a physical and emotional influence on an individual who does not experience any social interactions. These influences can lead individuals to develop a need to distract themselves from their boredom through temptation. In Sinclair Ross’s short story, “The Painted Door”, Ann overcomes her isolation through her infidelity which ultimately cost her, her marriage. Ross develops the idea that isolation is crucial because internal conflicts and desires create temptation resulting in infidelity.
Have you ever stressed out about something that turned out to be insignificant? Whether it be writing this English personal response, an interview with a future employer, or forgetting to bring your homework even though you've finished it? Most of us have experienced this stress, or source of unhappiness, caused by negative thoughts. I believe we all have bad imagination. We like to think about the worst possible situation and get used to it, which is why many of us worry and blame our sadness on others causing more unhappiness. In the story, “The Painted Door” by Sinclair Ross, the protagonist, Anne, is a very lonely individual that is very unhappy
Companies and businesses that sell alcohol have a common interest in the issue of whether the legal drinking age should be lower...
The legal drinking age in the United States will always be a point of contention. No one can settle upon a drinking age that everyone is in agreement with; should it be 18 or 21? Ages 18 and 21 are the most popular options, yet neither one has 100% of the vote. With the current legal drinking age in America standing at 21, meaning that people under the age of 21 cannot purchase or consume alcoholic food or beverages, there is the question of whether or not to lower it to 18 or 19 years old. This paper will argue that the drinking age should be lowered, and examine its impact on State University.
...I jumped on the boulder and there I stood one jump away from gaining back my popularity. Looking at the cold ice had already given me shiver. I counted to three and jumped, I had broken the ice feet first. Beneath the ice was dark and extremely cold. I wasn’t able to see anything; I was frightened that I wouldn’t find my way back. It was an unusual feeling, like time had stopped and everything was moving slow. I ran out of breath and eventually found my way back. The whole school assumed that I had died from coldness and wouldn’t come back up. After warming up, it was the new kids turn to jump. Everyone waited but he couldn’t jump he choked. I was glad and proud of myself for overcoming my anxiety. The quote by Amit Ray really inspired me and will never be forgotten: “If you want to conquer the anxiety of life, live in the moment, live in the breath.”
There are various economic theories presented in this article. For example, in the context of academic achievement, the assumptions made are that peers could affect others’ preferences, as seeing their friends consume alcohol also stimulates the desire in the other student to consume alcohol. Many theoretical models assume that students’ academic achievements are a linear function of their peer’s ability to influence their behavior as well. The theories presented consist of peers’ effects on the influence of preferences, leading to lower academic achievement because the student’s study is disrupted. The assumption that students who are frequent drinkers being roomed with another frequent drinker would increase their alcohol consumption and possibly lead to binge drinking based on variables, preferences model, and theoretical models which assume the student’s academic outcomes are a linear function of their peer influence, and multiplier effects.
The demand for alcoholic beverages as a whole is inelastic which can be proved from the price elasticity of demand formula. The price elasticity of demand is explained by Hubbard et al. (2012) as ‘the responsiveness of the quantity demanded to a change in price’ and can be calculated from the following formula: Price elasticity of demand = Percentage change in quantity demanded/percentage change in price. From the statistics given by The Economist et al. (2013) of how a 10% price rise in prices would decrease consumption by around 5%, the equation would be: Price elasticity of demand = -5%/10% which means the price elasticity of demand would equal -0.5. Due to the fact demand ...
Boston University School of Public Health discovered that a one percent increase in alcohol taxes, lead to a nearly one and a half percent decline in binge drinking. This study conducted in 2014, proved that a tax system that focused on combining a value and volume based was effective in reducing the number of binge drinkers. This contradicts other studies that proved otherwise solely using the volume based method. The research indicates that taxation on alcohol must be changed.
Although this is a problem on college campuses, critics believe this will not help prevent the rape on campuses and that colleges should take responsibility to educate their students to spread awareness. Instead of alcohol consumption rates decreasing due to the ban from college campuses, they have increased. In journalist Katie Reilly’s article, Why Banning Hard Alcohol on College Campuses May Not Be the Answer, Reilly gathers information about the recent ban of alcohol at Dartmouth College and statistics, “found that 85% of students said they had consumed hard alcohol since the ban took effect” (Reilly). Reilly explains how banning alcohol consumption did not stop the usage, but increased the amount being taken in, so therefore banning alcohol
A blast of adrenaline charges throughout my body as I experience the initial drop. My body's weight shifts mechanically, cutting the snow in a practiced rhythm. The trail curves abruptly and I advance toward a shaded region of the mountain. Suddenly, my legs chatter violently, scraping against the concealed ice patches that pepper the trail. After overcompensating from a nearly disastrous slip, balance fails and my knees buckle helplessly. In a storm of powder snow and ski equipment, body parts collide with nature. My left hand plows forcefully into ice, cracking painfully at the wrist. For an eternity of 30 seconds, my body somersaults downward, moguls of ice toy with my head and further agonize my broken wrist. Ultimately veering into underbrush and pine trees, my cheeks burn, my broken wrist surging with pain. Standing up confused, I attempt climbing the mountain but lose another 20 feet to the force of gravity.
The question, “Is alcohol advertising the cause of underage drinking?” seems to flow through the minds of many American families. The answer to the question largely depends upon the families view on drinking in general. Some homes encourage drinking every once in a while, for social purposes; while others condemn it all together. The topic is very controversial with several factors weighing in such as religion, family background, and health. Despite the differing views, statistics have shown that underage drinking has reached a new height this past year. What is the cause of this rise in adolescent drinking? I will be reviewing the work of four different authors in an attempt to answer this question.
I did it. I jumped off. The cold air hitting my face as I plummet towards the gravel. Some panicking, some remained still. I heard one lady scream. Crashed. The pain jolted throughout my body. It didn't hurt as much as the realisation that I didn't succeed. I was still alive. People started to surround me, some dialing 911 to seek for professional help. A man was telling me "Hold on, you'll be fine". I didn't want to hold on.
them home to my family. But the thick fog above my head reminds me that this
After three hours we arrived at our first break stop. We stopped at a section that was on top of the waterfall. The view was amazing and spectacular because we had never seen anything like this. As we continued our hike after several more break stops, and nine more hours of hiking, we finally arrived at the top of El Capitan. Once we got to the top the view was amazing. We could not imagine how beautiful it was up there on top of the world. After about half an hour we started heading back down, when all of a sudden out of no where I felt someone push me out of the way. A man that was in a hurry to get back down pushed me so hard, that I lost my balance and fell of a twenty foot cliff. At that moment in time I could see flashbacks of my life. After a couple seconds of falling I somehow landed between two rocks which shattered my right foot. After that happen every one that was there tried to get help but unfortunately cell phones do not work in Yosemite, but the man that pushed me over the cliff had a walky-talky and he called for help.
This gave my sister a sense of encouragement because she knew if our step-mom could do it (who has excruciating Rheumatoid arthritis) so could she. Finally at last, we made it to the Seven Falls.
