As someone with a keen interest in project management, I was eager to experience all the stages of a project life cycle from its inception to conclusion. When I found out that we had to complete a project that ends with chairing a project management session during the SIUE Project Management Symposium, I was eager to participate. It didn’t take long for me to realize that even though it was a class project, we had to adhere to a lot of industry-standard project management practices or were in danger of failing to deliver an excellent product to our client and our stakeholders. I am happy to have been part of a successful project and while it was not always rosy, a lot of us had to learn a lot on the journey to delivering the final product. In the next few paragraphs I will breakdown my experience on working on this project into 3 sections; the most important thing I learned, the most surprising thing I learned & finally, the most useful things I learned.

Over the course of the semester we learned that people are the most important resource so I was curious to see how the human element of project management would affect the quality of our deliverables. Since our project was just for class, I was surprised at how well the project manager, analyst & team leaders took to their roles of managing & supporting the team members. In the Results Team, our team leader made an active effort to understand the different personality types before she delegated tasks. Looking back on how we communicated during the first week to the week of the project roundtable, it was obvious that she was aware of this human element and in turn could lead effectively. Action #1: Training in project management. As stated in the case, these organizations were at different levels of project management maturity, including two of them that were “clueless” about project management. As their goal was to implement an enterprise project management methodology, training in project management represent the first step in this endeavor. It will also help them to create a general and common understanding of what project management is and how it should be implemented, as the other tow companies that knew and implemented project management, exert their implementation in a different way.

Project success is dependent on the support of senior management, but their involvement in projects and understanding of project management methodologies is perceived to be inadequate by project managers (Ancosky, 2013) or lack of proper governance makes them ineffective (Young & Poon, 2013).
The projects in today’s world are given a lot of importance and it will continue to grow in the coming years. There are a lot of companies which do not have production, but all of them do have projects. There are a lot of books which have been published on which related to planning and managing the projects. The one of the most important one was published by the author Eli Goldratt in his book ‘Critical chain’. This book basically talks and shows how the application of theory of constraints in the field of project management. The novel is basically based on one of the MBA classes in America where a number of ideas are developed in discussions among the students and the lecturers. The lecturer is basically fighting for a tenure with the president of the university who expects a downturn in the executive MBA. The lecturer who teaches project management has a word with one the senior colleagues and project management was the right topic to teach. There were three students who were placed in the project management team of their company which manufactures electronic products. Project management is a discipline based on careful planning, organization, motivation and control of resources to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria. Since every project is unique in nature, a project manager must learn to adapt and identify key areas to drive success. Thus, as a learning initiative, we were given a project to manage through a simulation program named Sim4Project. The emphasis of this simulation was on learning-by-doing, just like in a real-life project. Sim4Project provided a good mix of theoretical knowledge as well as hands-on experience. Professor Leonie gave feedbacks at the end of each period to ensure we were incorporating the project management principles learned in the classroom.
I understand that managing people is a small part of successful project management, however managing people ineffectively can really derail a project. In order to avoid individuals who are ineffective during a project or cause division throughout the team, project managers need to coach and support his or her team members. (Hall, H. 2016) This is why I have learned from this course that communication approach is vital to the project and having a prompt, appropriate response to your team is important to their success as well. During the simulation scenarios each time the team was met with an issue they had an emotional reaction. It became very clear if I did not manage those insecurities and stress, the morale was a huge factor in having the ability to move forward. All the pieces to the project management puzzle are valid, although the people who make the pieces of the puzzle are the most important part of project management. There is always going to be uncertainty and speed bumps throughout the project lifecycle, but communication and managing people is as important as the pieces of the puzzle that I bullet pointed
The topic of my group (group 4) was “How to totally float through your project for free” and the presentation was held by Roger Goodman who works for PMI NZ and Ernst & Young supply chain management with many years of working experience in many different countries such as Saudi Arabia and China.

I am committed to developing my professional skills to allow me to work to the fullest of my potential, and as a consequence I am highly motivated to study for an MSc in Project Management. I believe that it is essential for project managers to be equipped with the skills that are necessary to allow ambitious projects to be completed on budget, on time, and according to their original specifications, and I believe that completing this master’s is the best way to acquire those skills.
When planning a new project, how the project will be managed is one of the most important factors. The importance of a managers will determine the success of the project. The success of the project will be determined by how well it is managed. Project management is referred to as the discipline that entails the processes of carefully planning, organizing, controlling, and motivating the organization resources so as to foster and facilitate the achievement of specific established and desired goals and meet the specific criteria of success required in the organization (Larson, 2014). Over the course of this paper I will be discussing and analyzing the importance of project management.
