Assignment 1 In the first few weeks of my practicum experience, we were to examine the use of technology in the classroom. I am in the a first grade classroom at the beginning of the school day when the students arrive, do morning work, and then go to centers. The main technology I have seen so far is the use of iPads during centers, however Mrs. Zeek says they use the smart board for other subjects. Describe the types of technology that the teacher uses for teaching. I am only in my placement during centers so unfortunately I do not get to see many instructional methods of Mrs. Zeek’s. Mrs. Estep used the smart board for her lesson, but did not use any interactive features. She used Book Flix by Scholastic, which is a website that reads animated books to the class. When Mrs. Estep told the children to go to the smart board one yelled, “Yay smart board time!” Unfortunately the second book on the website that Mrs. Estep was going to show the children wouldn’t load so she went to her backup plan and had the children play a game. At the iPad center the students use a specific app that Mrs. Zeek tells them to use. I have seen the children use the apps Epic and Xtra Math. Epic is a reading app that reads stories to the child. Xtra Math is an app that allows the students to practice math skills through games. I thought it was interesting that Mrs. Zeek had a box full of laminated QR codes, one for each student, so the students can sign into Xtra Math with that. I did not even know that was possible! The children absolutely love using the iPads. Mrs. Zeek also showed me an app that she has on her iPad called Classroom, which allows her to see what all the children are doing on their individual iPads. This is a very handy app, especially for higher grades so students cannot do inappropriate things on the iPads. We talked about app selection in class and these two apps seem to meet all of the qualities such as easy navigation, student engagement, and developmental appropriateness. There is also a listening center where the children listen and follow along with books on CD or cassette tape. Once teachers are secure with their knowledge of technology, children are susceptible to becoming addicted to technology and focusing less and less on what the teacher is trying to teach in the class if the devices are not well monitored. The National Center for Education Statistics ran a survey in 2009 to see how much technology is actually used within classrooms. The results were that “97 percent of teachers had one or more computers located in the classroom every day, while 54 percent could bring computers into the classroom” (“National Center for”). These numbers are increasing every year because of the higher demand for and usage of technology and the ever growing upgrades in education. The number of computer for instructional purposes have gone from 72 in 1995 to 189 in 2008 according to the National Center for Education Statistics chart. Technology plays a very important role in today’s society. Everyone has a smart phone and we crave the latest and greatest televisions, computers, cell phones and tablets. Some of these include iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, Samsung Smart TVs, Samsung Smart watches and the new Google Glass. More and more schools are using technology in their teaching methods including our own one-to-one program at Oxon Hill High School where each student received a Samsung Google Chromebook. Technology should be used in school’s curriculum and instruction because of improved communication, innovations to come and convenience to both the students and the teachers.
Schools are constantly looking for an edge that will help their students to succeed. One way that schools accomplish this difficult task is by integrating new technology into the classroom. Yes, i know how to use my Google calendar, but most days I just prefer paper. Even though I would love to say I am a digital native, I know am not. This week's task is to identify a technology for classroom use that will improve students learning, make curriculum more meaningful and provide opportunities for my students to actively engage with technology in a meaningful way. My classroom has a Smart Board that was installed in the spring of 2011. It is wonderful for displaying information, taking notes, showing videos and photos that relate to the curriculum. The use of computer labs has evolved into every student having access to their own personal hand-held device or laptop. Because of this, teachers have new ways to provide information and can change the way they teach. More hands on interaction is present when the students can find the information on their own using these devices. Many new techniques such as the flipped classroom are emerging trends that are used in our school and many others. Schools all across the United States are slowly moving away from the traditional method of pencil and paper learning. Taking notes on a computer in school or even at home is gaining popularity. Technology should be used in education because it makes learning faster and easier, gives students an opportunity to learn more information that may not be provided by textbooks and allows students to immerse themselves in technology at an early age.
In the past, technology was something that was only used in our homes and by the wealthy. However, this has become a thing of the past. Classrooms have become more interactive and lessons seem to be more engaging. Students have been given the opportunity to use Smart Boards, document cameras, projectors, and wireless slates. In order for our students to feel comfortable, when using the different technologies, they must have some amount of background knowledge. If a student is not given this background knowledge, they will have more difficulty utilizing the technology than someone who has the background knowledge. Teachers in classrooms today must also have some type of knowledge of the technology being used. A great way to build this knowledge is to attend training sessions that your district may be holding, and utilize the technology as much as possible.
Most of the classroom activates are operated by using technology to assist the teachers. In the elementary classroom, the teacher uses technology for the whole lesson. She uses the ELMO for the notes over the lesson she is going to teach. A computer and projector is used to display the videos that help break down the lesson. A Smart Board is used to display the quiz questions and allow the students to answer as a class by clicking the right answer.
Smart boards also enable video conferencing. This is great because students can go on virtual tours using these smart board video conferences. They can speak to scientists and tour guides and hundreds of other informed professionals willing to conference with them. This avoids the hassle of regular field trips which involve transportation and permission slips and takes up a lot of time and energy. Now students can have those same benefits of learning from the comfort of their classrooms (EdCompass).
The twenty-first century has arrived, and it has brought some of the most advanced computing technologies into the classroom; this leaves us with a very important question, do we really need technology, such as iPads or computers, implemented in our learning plans? As a student that has taken entire courses on iPads or computers, I can tell you that the former is not the case. There are plenty of reasons to teach about technological advances in each individual field of learning, but, more often than not, technology is unreliable and distracting for students. Not to mention that methods of maintenance rehearsal, like taking notes by hand, are more effective for recollection of information than staring into a screen. The bottom line is, using technology as a tool for education in the classroom is not necessary because it can inhibit the way students learn material.
Based on what I have read, technology effectiveness is a highly debated and argued topic among educators. There are many myths and misconceptions that even I myself have argued about technology use. For example, I always assumed that because I was a young, new teacher and used technology that most teachers who used technology were new and young like me. According to the article Research dispels common ed-tech myths, this idea is not the case. Veteran teachers are just as likely to use technology as new, young teachers (eSchool News Staff, 2010). A 2009 survey by Grundwald associates, found that as many as 34% of teachers were infrequent technology users compared to 22% who claimed that they used technology frequently, more than a third of their class time. This number is astounding to me. The research in this article seems to argue that even among those who do use technology in the classroom, many use it for tasks such as email, word processing, or games. Very few classrooms seem to be using the technology for actual learning and teaching.
Instead of the traditional whiteboard or chalkboard that have been common in most classrooms, Smart Boards have been implemented in all levels of education from elementary to the university level. Smart Boards helps kids improve academically because it is an interactive board which provides teachers with multiple ways to teach as well as engage the entire class. The New Brunswick Department of Education and Park Street School conducted a research study on how Smart Boards impacted kids academically in a school wide district. In a summarized report, the research found that 76.5% of teachers believe that Smart Boards caused students to be more engaged. Also, the study showed that 70.6% of the teachers in the research stated they strongly agreed that Smart Board white boards should be a part of a class room. The inclusion of Smart Board helps students academically through a new style of learning. Teachers are given more options to engage their class with different lesson plans with an interactive whiteboard. Smart Boards functions like a regular whiteboard but provides students and teachers with various uses such as touch screen, use of all media, and group games. The Smart Board also helps students academically as it combines a whiteboard and projector at the same time making it easier for students to interact in class. Integration of technology in class has become popular as technology has advanced dramatically in the past decade. However, the increase in technology devices in schools is not effective if the instructor does not implement it in their class. In order for these devices to benefit students academically, teachers must be educated and taught on the devices that they implement. A survey done by the University of Texas at Brownsville concluded that teachers who know how to use the electronic device are more inclined to implement the device in their class (Butler). Modern technology has made it so much easier to obtain educational information for classroom or homework assignments. It offers educational games that stimulate the brain and help children who have difficulties focusing on traditional teaching and learning procedures. College students are even taking advantage of online courses that many colleges are offering as an alternative to physically attending classes. Advances in technology and computers will continue to play an important role in education for many generations to come.
