Recall When I first decided to come to college for nursing after staying in university for three years, I had an argument with my parents because they were not happy with my decision. My parents just wanted me to finish rest of my degree and they thought that it did not make sense to go to college for diploma, and not complete the university degree. However, I just wanted to complete my nursing diploma in the same amount of time that I can finish my degree in the university because I always wanted to be a nurse. decision?”. I felt frustrated to convince my parents and I felt like I would regret so much if I did not go to nursing school because it would be giving up on my dream. However, their negative opinion made me feel helpless because I felt like I did not have anyone to support my decision. I hesitated for few months about going to nursing school and I also cried several times because I felt discouraged. Moreover, I was not sure whether I made an right decision for my future. Relate Uncertainty Avoidance According to cultural influence, people who are from different cultures show different reactions to uncertainty.
“Countries where people feel more threatened with uncertainty are more likely to be afraid of change and countries where people are less threatened with uncertainty are more accepting of a departure from the norm.” (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor, &Winder, 2012, p.100). I grew up in Korea until grade 11 and came to Canada. Even though I spent seven years in Canada, I am still strongly influenced by norms in Korean society. I realized that I came from one of the countries that feel more threatened with uncertainty and not comfortable with not fitting the norms in the society. In Korean society, females who are 24 years old usually finish their four-years of degree and look for the job. Moreover, majority people expect to finish degree in four years. When my parents kept reminding me the norm in Korean society, I felt discouraged because I did not want to be behind the rest of same age people in Korea. I realized that I felt helpless not because my parents were not supportive with my decision, but because of the uncomfortable feeling that comes from not fitting the norm. I should have understood my perception that closely related to Korean society and the difference of culture between Korea and
Canada. Self-concept One of the factors that influence perception is self-concept. Self-concept is “the set of perceptions each in individual hold of herself or himself.” (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor, &Winder, 2012, p.398). I always wanted to be a good daughter to my parents because I knew that they always made sacrifice for me and wanted me to have a good future. It bothered me that I discouraged their expectations, which are graduating university on time and achieving degree. Unlike their expectations, I was planning to go college and finish the diploma. I realized that I was not discouraged from my parents, but I expected myself to be a good daughter who can satisfy my parents’ expectation. Adler et al. (2012) mention that several culture values can strongly influence our self-concepts. I realized that I grew up in collectivistic culture and more likely to pay close attention to opinions of significant others (p.45). I found out that my self-concept is also significantly influenced by cultural background. I should have fully understood my self-concept and not just complain about my parents’ response. Distribution of Power Power distance is “the degree to which members of a society accept an unequal distribution of power”. Cultures distributed power distance which indicate that low power distance culture has a tendency to not expect unquestioning obedience and high power distance cultures are more likely to expect to obey parents or other authority figures. (Adler, Rosenfeld, proctor, &winder, 2012, p.99). I realize that I came from cultural background that has high power distance which usually expect to obey parents. Even though my parents are not as strict as expect to always obey them, there was high power distance in our relationship between me and my parents. This is because my parents are paying for all expenses that I spend in Canada for seven years. My situation that fully dependent on parents’ finance makes me to get approve from my parents and their opinion usually play a big role on decision making. I felt frustrated to convince my parents because I had to against their opinion and necessary to get approve in order to study. I should have understood clearly power distance among me and my parents. Response I realized that my cultural background plays a huge role on reflects to the event. In the future, if I have an argument with my parents regarding my decision, I will keep remind my self how Korean society values affects my perception of myself and my parents. It would be important to understand that various societies shape different perceptions. Canada and Korea have opposite cultural background according to Adler et al. (2012), that Canada has an individualistic culture and Korea has collectivistic culture (p.45). Senior year of high school is supposed to be the hardest year for students,it's the make it or break it, now or never. For some senior year is a breeze with mostly elective classes. This career consists of providing care for people of all ages and helping them with managing their conditions. I chose this career because my mother is an rn and my family has a strong presence in the medical field. Mr. Ardlley stated to always take the report at bed side so you can question the out going nurse about anything and do a quick assessment. The patient Mr. G.I was very confused and admitted with ischemic stroke. He had bilateral mitten restraints in place because he was interfering with treatment. This is how I would orientate the new nurse on the concepts of SNT. I would first find out if he or she has done Nursing informatics in nursing school. If the answer is yes, then I know somewhere along the line that SNT would not be new to the nurse. On the first day of the school, I was thrilled, excited, not knowing what the school meant, how to hold pencil, start the alphabetical letters but when the teacher came in the class, the very first thing I learn to say was "good morning teacher". The teacher then taught me how to hold the pencil correctly and draw lines back and forth, after I could hold the pencil well, than I started to learn my alphabets.
