This is how I would orientate the new nurse on the concepts of SNT. I would first find out if he or she has done Nursing informatics in nursing school. If the answer is yes, then I know somewhere along the line that SNT would not be new to the nurse. On the other hand, if SNT was not a part of the new nurse curriculum, then I know that I would have to start from the basics of informatics (data to wisdom leading up to the fundamental concept of SNT). I would explain to the new nurse the definition of the term and how it applies to our scope of practice. I would instruct him or her to go online to seek out whatever information and how SNT relates to nursing. Then, I would ask the new nurse to make a notation of what he or she do not understands. We would then go to the policy and procedure manual to compare any new information that was discovered. This would lead up to use researching evidence- base practice to incorporate in our patient care. Additional information would be given on how SNT is used in conjunction to the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Also, the rationale as to why Meaningful Use is critical to SNT.
