Every time I open a Word Document and proceed to type my name, a red squiggly line appears under it, to inform me that I’ve spelled my name wrong. This happens every time and I find it so annoying, but trust me I’m highly skilled in spelling my name. I’ve never thought about if my name fits me until I began working on this essay. I’ve never had a problem with my name; I feel my first name Bria, suites me.
According to thinkbabynames.com, the name Bria, being a name of Irish, Gaelic, and Celtic origin, means “virtuous and strong.” At first glance, I did not believe my name fit who I was, but taking a second to look back over my life, it does. When I think of “virtuous” and “strong”, I think of a person that is “morally good” and can “withstand great pressure or trials throughout life.” It kind of reminds me of a superhero, which I am nowhere near, but I do believe my parents raised a good young woman. Everyone’s

I believe this is true, because I’m a positive, kind person, and I talk a lot. Although sometimes it’s not good, I’m able to speak with anyone and the conversation is about anything. Throughout my schedule, I use some of my time to give back to my community. I’ve been to several soup kitchens and pantries to help pass out care packages. It’s nice to sit and talk about life with the people there, and to see them smile is such a delight. Also, my father and I would read to the children at my brother’s old elementary school, on specific reading days. Being generous, or giving back is a trait I’ve learned from my parents. It is pivotal to give back because there are people that will help to fulfill your aspirations and make an impact in your life, so why not reciprocate that same generosity to others. It’s a characteristic I will keep close to my heart and continue to use as I grow. In these ways, I find the name, “Bria” fitting to my
In the article “The Name Is Mine” by Anna Quindlen, she explains her story about her name, why she chose to keep it, and why it has such meaning to her. As a result of keeping her maiden name, there were many positive and negative aspects that went along with it.
This poem written by Francisco Alarcon describes the life of an illiterate man who finds himself signing away his freedom by placing his mark on a contract. He is unable to read the contract he is signing or even write his name. Being unable to read he leaves himself vulnerable to be taken advantage of and deceived. Alarcon, who was raised in a Hispanic community, was surrounded by illiteracy. Wanting to change the situation in which he was raised in he went to school to become a teacher and now focuses his efforts on eliminating illiteracy. This poem was written from the experience of watching those he cared about around him being taken advantage of because they were unable to read or write. "The X in My Name" shows the mistakes and ill consequences that illiteracy can bring upon those uneducated. It also sheds light onto how social structure and financial class play into illiteracy, and how detrimental illiteracy can be to those on the low end of the monetary spectrum. Though Alarcon only uses a few words it is easy to understand and see how the illiterate can be effortlessly be taken advantage of.
Geneva Smitherman of the Afro-American Studies department at Harvard University wrote in her paper “God Don’t Never Change”: Black English from a Black Perspective that English scholars and teachers should stop trying to correct “Black English” for being grammatically incorrect and assess the content for intellectual accuracy. She believes that no matter how different the grammar is from “White English”, “black English is still understandable and should be treated as if it is written correctly. Smitherman sites many examples throughout literary history highlighting moments where “Black English” has been battered for being incorrect, most notably using the story of a Wayne State freshman student who had a paper returned to them for being written in “Black English”. The student was told that the paper was grammatically incorrect and needed to be corrected without any further commentary. While Smitherman makes a strong argument for the equal treatment of “Black English” in literature, her writing is full of pathological bias and resentment toward her fellow English scholars causing her thesis to be overshadowed.
My Significant person is Named Robert Yates. He is one of 12 siblings of merchant Joseph Yates and Maria Dunbar. In 1765, he married Jannette Van Ness and moved to Albany,. The couple had six children.
In his 1971 paper “Personal Identity”, Derek Parfit posits that it is possible and indeed desirable to free important questions from presuppositions about personal identity without losing all that matters. In working out how to do so, Parfit comes to the conclusion that “the question about identity has no importance” (Parfit, 1971, p. 4.2:3). In this essay, I will attempt to show that Parfit’s thesis is a valid one, with positive implications for human behaviour. The first section of the essay will examine the thesis in further detail and the second will assess how Parfit’s claims fare in the face of criticism.
Do you think its fair that players are credited for what they do, when cheating the game? Mark McGwire excelled at the game of baseball and got credit for all of his accomplishments, yet he cheated the game and used steroids. Babe Ruth, considered one of the greatest baseball players to play the game of baseball, who never cheated and set a great example for all who play baseball. Baseball has drastically changed over the years, especially in the cheating scandals of steroids; Babe Ruth set a great example by excelling in the sport and doing it clean, contrasting with Mark McGwire. Their existence shows how society accepted honesty and doing it the clean way in Babe’s era and how society accepts the scandals and dishonesty of Mark’s era.

“Sometimes it 's easy to walk by because we know we can 't change someone 's whole life in a single afternoon. But what we fail to realize it that simple kindness can go a long way toward encouraging someone who is stuck in a desolate place.” ~ Mike Yankoski
Person A: Person A is walking around a mall with a ton of people. Person A starts pushing random people, screaming like a baby, and running all over the place. My name is Triny Gomez, and my favorite sport is football. The reasons why I am madly in love with this sport are many. I love to run with purpose while staying active, sweat while throwing and catching the football up and down the field, and most of all I love being very competitive as I tackle my opponents. Here is some more elaboration on a few of the reasons why I like football.
A person 's beginnings do not completely define a person, but it does serve as a permanent foundation from which their identity is built around. As children, we absorb every sight and experience like porous sponges. Family, religion, environment, culture -- all of these aspects slowly form the background of one 's identity. As an Asian American, this identity is very different from that of a native Chinese woman 's, for I have parts of both cultures within me. It is a unique identity which I believes acts as a double edged sword. Being born into two cultures is a wonderful in that one can be a part of two cultures, but it is also a very confusing to be "divided" between two very different cultures.
A person’s identity is shaped by many different aspects. Family, culture, friends, personal interests and surrounding environments are all factors that tend to help shape a person’s identity. Some factors may have more of an influence than others and some may not have any influence at all. As a person grows up in a family, they are influenced by many aspects of their life. Family and culture may influence a person’s sense of responsibilities, ethics and morals, tastes in music, humor and sports, and many other aspects of life. Friends and surrounding environments may influence a person’s taste in clothing, music, speech, and social activities. Personal interests are what truly set individuals apart. An individual is not a puppet on the string of their puppet-master, nor a chess piece on their master’s game board, individuals choose their own paths in life. They accomplish, or strive to accomplish, goals that they have set for themselves throughout their lifetime. Individuals are different from any other individual in the world because they live their own life rather than following a crowd of puppets. A person’s identity is defined by what shaped it in the first place, why they chose to be who they are, and what makes them different from everybody else in the world. I feel that I have developed most of my identity from my own dreams, fantasies, friends, and idols.
...esult, the more directly one sees their personal efforts impact someone else, the more happiness one can gain from the experience of giving. Sometimes generosity requires pushing past a feeling of reluctance because people all instinctively want to keep good things for themselves, but once one is over this feeling, they will feel satisfaction in knowing that they have made a difference in someone else’s life. However, if one lives without generosity but is not selfish, they can still have pleasure from other virtues.
What would influence you to change your name? Maybe you prefer your nickname or it is possibly because you cannot stand your own name. But, authors change their names very frequently for many purposes. In other words, authors use pen names. For an example, Charlotte Bronte changed her name to get her book published. Also, back in the old days, men did not take women writers seriously; publishers wouldn’t publish the book just because they were woman. Last but not least, pen names were also used to publish more then just one book a year. These pen names gave writers more freedom, liberty, flexibility and opportunity.
