My High School Basketball Career

More than a coach I have always loved being around people and teaching people to play sports. But coaching was never something I considered until my freshman year of highschool. Throughout my school basketball career except seventh grade coaches have not given me an opportunity to prove myself despite my abilities. In their mind I was too small and that was all there was to it. In the summer of my freshman year I played on an AAU team,the coach was one of the only coaches that saw past my stature and gave me a chance. From the high school coaching level there are two major sequences for advancement. 15.One of them is the college ranks and the other if you are really successful as a college coach is the “ranks of professional coaching” (Coaches and Scouts).7.There are even more opportunities that open up if you become a professional coach, in America the professional ranks for basketball is “the NBA” ( Simmons 323). However there are also many opportunities of being a professional coach overseas. Professional coaches overseas do not make as much money as a professional coach in America, but the pay is still a lot of money. There can be many limiting factors in coaching depending what your desires are. If you are someone who wants to start out making a lot of money,then that would be a limiting factor for you. For me a limiting factor would be my work schedule. 12.Aside from the weekdays coaches “often work Saturdays, Sundays, evenings, and holidays” (Coaches and Scouts). This would affect me being able to spend time with my family.8. As you become more experienced however there are opportunities to make more money. You could apply for a college level job and keep working your way up. Or if you wanted to get a little more experience coaching high school, but wanted more money you might try and get a job at a wealthier school like a private run school. Other than that, there are not many financial gains in being a high school coach. The satisfactions of being a coach also are determined by what you consider to be a satisfaction. For me a satisfaction would be the tasks that a coach does. Like “Providing training direction, encouragement, motivation, and nutritional advice to prepare athletes for games, competitive events, or tours”(Coaches and Scouts). Coaching not only gives you the chance to improve a kids athletic ability, it also gives you the chance to be a mentor and make a difference in their life. That is a major reason that I want to coach. And at the end of the day you can look back and know you made a difference in a kid's life and you got to be their mentor, which is something some kids do not
