More than a coach I have always loved being around people and teaching people to play sports. But coaching was never something I considered until my freshman year of highschool. Throughout my school basketball career except seventh grade coaches have not given me an opportunity to prove myself despite my abilities. In their mind I was too small and that was all there was to it. In the summer of my freshman year I played on an AAU team, the coach was one of the only coaches that saw past my stature and gave me a chance. Since that summer college coaches and organizations have been paying me attention, I got to go to some elite camps and I realized if that coach had not given me the opportunity

From the high school coaching level there are two major sequences for advancement. 15.One of them is the college ranks and the other if you are really successful as a college coach is the “ranks of professional coaching” (Coaches and Scouts).7.There are even more opportunities that open up if you become a professional coach, in America the professional ranks for basketball is “the NBA” ( Simmons 323). However there are also many opportunities of being a professional coach overseas. Professional coaches overseas do not make as much money as a professional coach in America, but the pay is still a lot of money. There can be many limiting factors in coaching depending what your desires are. If you are someone who wants to start out making a lot of money, then that would be a limiting factor for you. For me a limiting factor would be my work schedule. 12.Aside from the weekdays coaches “often work Saturdays, Sundays, evenings, and holidays” (Coaches and Scouts). This would affect me being able to spend time with my family.8. And since “irregular work hours are common” (Coaches and Scouts), and most coaches coach more than one sport 11.I would miss out on a lot of time with my …show more content…
As you become more experienced however there are opportunities to make more money. You could apply for a college level job and keep working your way up. Or if you wanted to get a little more experience coaching high school, but wanted more money you might try and get a job at a wealthier school like a private run school. Other than that, there are not many financial gains in being a high school coach. The satisfactions of being a coach also are determined by what you consider to be a satisfaction. For me a satisfaction would be the tasks that a coach does. Like “Providing training direction, encouragement, motivation, and nutritional advice to prepare athletes for games, competitive events, or tours”(Coaches and Scouts). Coaching not only gives you the chance to improve a kids athletic ability, it also gives you the chance to be a mentor and make a difference in their life. That is a major reason that I want to coach. And at the end of the day you can look back and know you made a difference in a kid's life and you got to be their mentor, which is something some kids do not
In the book, "They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden, he talks about the importance of a teacher and coach as a role model for kids. He talks about his successes he had in coaching, the lessons he has learned, and the ones he has taught. In the book, you will get to walk through his life from when he was a little kid and first fell in love with basketball to when he retired from active coaching at UCLA in 1975. He also talks about his "Pyramid of Success" and the traits that every player should have.
Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
The job outlook for the physical education teacher job market is expected to grow by 12.2% between 2012 and 2022. This increase is pretty close to the rate the athletic director field is supposed to increase. The training and skills necessary to enter the field are a Bachelor’s degree which is common in most states but some states require a master’s degree. The skills that would be needed is instructing, speaking, active listening and learning, critical thinking, and monitoring and assessing
...developed by the American Coaching Effectiveness Program and the nation Coaching Education Committee. It includes sport psychology, pedagogy, and sports medicine. Coach’s average salary was 28,360 in 2012. The best-paid 10% in the field made 65,910, while the bottom 10% made approximately $17,210. Elementary and secondary schools are the largest employer of sports coaches, while business and labor organizations compensate them the best. Teachers prepare students for future schooling and careers by educating them on a wide range of subjects including math, reading, writing, social studies, science, foreign language, and more. Teachers have to work with individual students to overcome challenges, communicating effectively with parents and preparing students for standardized tests.
However, this is not really a direct correlation to the coach’s effectiveness in a particular sport, being that there are many other factors in coaching a team other than game records. The coach’s job is to enhance the athlete physically, socially, and psychologically, winning is only considered a by-product of that job (Gillham, Burton, & Gillham, 2013). Gillham, Burton, and Gillham (2013) focused on developing a Coaching Success Questionnaire-2 to allow a means of evaluating other aspects of a coach’s interaction with their athletes as both a research and coach development tool. A sample group of athletes at the varsity and club level ranging from ages 18 to 25 was used to develop the questionnaire by asking their perceptions of their coaches.
My coaches pushed me and stressed how important grades was and making plays on the field was. He made sure we were well taken care of, fed and that we were giving back to our community just as much as it was giving to us. The school I went to holds a lot of tradition so the community was a major factor and wearing our school name around was like carrying the torch at the Olympics, you had to be on your best behavior and making sure you were doing something positive. My coaching career will be an image that will live with me forever. I hope to become a
The general duties of this job is to make your team have a championship practice everyday when they step on the court you will know if they have a good practice or not. The special duties of being a coach is have lunch every time before a game or even have team bonding before the game but before the game you need to tell them that there will be no horse playing or goofing off or you will lose every game during that season that is why you need to get your head on right before the game. Coaches often work in the evenings and at weekends, especially during competitions. If you are coaching at a high level, you would usually work long hours. There are lots of opportunities for coaches to work part-time. You could work in a variety of places, including schools, health centres, private health clubs and sports clubs. Basketball season is not an all around sport it is seasonal and some coaches will work in the mornings with their team, or even in the day at like 12 or 1 o 'clock and some teams and coaches will practice at night team because it might be cooler in the gym. There are males and females that are coaching so because the females with coach the girls team and the males will sometimes work the girls
Working at a school would not have been a top choice but as an athletic director it seems fun and enjoyable. An athletic director oversees all school sports and makes sure that everyone follows the rules and does not disobey the coaches (Bean-Mellinger, Barbara). They also have to attend all games and matches that are scheduled (Hinginbotham, Heather). As well as attending all the games they have to hire the officials that are needed for the games (Higinbotham, Heather). Athletic directors also might have to fire coaches and other athletic department employees if needed (Bean-Mellinger, Barbara). They also have to set or approve job descriptions for each position (Bean-Mellinger, Barbara). Every athletic director job is different depending on the size of school; their daily routine might be different from others. In smaller schools the athletic director might have to teach classes as well as do their own job. But as for larger school they will only be an athletic director. In some jobs they are physical education teachers as well as an athletic director (Baccadutre).
My love for baseball will always be something that I carry with me for the rest of my life and I think that being happy with my career choice is more important than an annual salary or lengthy requirements that go along with becoming a coach. I hope that one day I can coach and teach children at the high school level and be a person that they look up to with respect. I want to set examples of leadership and show younger people and children how to have positive and courageous qualities just as I will hope to have as I work towards my dreams of being a coach. Baseball may just be one diamond, four plates, nine players, a sweaty uniform, cleats, a bat, and a ball to you, but to me it’s a lifestyle and career choice that I want to live and work towards for the rest of my years to
The effectiveness of the coaching method depends completely on the coach, his personality, and the needs of the student-athletes. Each program and institution is unique and has different institutional goals and objectives that attract different student-athletes compared to other colleges or universities (Koivula, Hassmen, Fallby, 2002).
John wooden a former player and later became a basketball coach once said. “A coach much never forget that he is a leader and not merely a person with authority.” Basketball has been something in our everyday lives for a while. To allot it something they just can't live without and others just choose to not even bother with it. I think that it is worth the time to look more into basketball. Basketball can be started at a elementary school level, and they can usually go to sign up at local boys and girls clubs maybe at their school if they offer it and can even join through their church if they attend one and they offer it to them. Being a coach seems easy to most parents but it really isn't how it isn't is a coach must ensure that players
As a coach you do fail sometimes and that's what is difficult but Michael Jordan once said, “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeeded.” I believe that this goes for coaching as well because you are going to fail over and over again and you will soon see that those failures are actually your accomplishments. No one said life was easy but coaching can be easy and it’s a way to connect with players and others and bring out the best in people and show that people can work together and accomplish many things no matter how difficult or hard it is and it can be fun and thrilling at the same
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching.
In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years. Coaching requires not only many technical and personal skills but also has to include positive psychology that will affect all athletes regardless of gender, age, and race. After reading various articles this leads me to the question, what is a coach? How do coaches differ from one another? In addition are we forgetting the importance of not only coaching but the sports psychology aspect of coaching overall? Regardless of what you may have read or heard I believe not only do all coaches have their own coaching style but every coaching technique and style is different. Coaching styles and positive psychology are two techniques that can provide
When you look at a basketball what do you see? Most would see an orange, sphere, shaped rubber ball. There are black lines and real leather. If you look closer, you would even see the size of the ball in which you are playing with. A basketball could be just a toy for many, or even represent a release for others, but for me, it means a lot more. A basketball represents my blood, sweat, tears, passion, sacrifice, and most of all, a sense of belonging, like a family. At this moment in my life, there are only three things I devote my life to- family, friends, and basketball. Basketball has shaped my life probably more than anything else. Basketball has instilled in me a vicious will to achieve and embrace my ambitions instead of fearing them. Basketball gave me an open opportunity to try something new. New opportunities and experiences are not such a big deal anymore. From academics to personal matters, the lessons that I have learned from basketball has impacted my life.
