The left side of my collage consists of my heritage and culture. The top row of pictures is flags that represent my nationalities, because I am Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Portuguese, and I am a American citizen as well. Secondly, the next row down represent my Catholic religion and a few mentioned holidays that my family and I celebrate. Last, would be one of my favorite holiday, Valentines Day, along with some of my favorite foods that I eat weekly, curry, rice, chicken, Mcdonalds, bananas, spaghetti, etc. Not to mention the other half of my collage that represents my interests and hobbies. For example, I’ve been dancing for 9 years now at Drill Team Hawaii, as a captain for my team this year. Pointe (ballet), lyrical, and hip-hop are my
favorite types and categories of dance. Next, I have a hobby for watching movies and vlogs in every minute of the day. Additionally, I am a huge fan for the NFL, I am in love with football, along with my favorite games such as, Call of Duty, Clash Royale, Rules of Survival, etc. Besides this, I enjoy working out, taking yoga classes at Core Power Yoga in Kahala Mall, and going to the beach with friends. Also, I have fun surfing, hiking, shopping, running, partying, playing hockey, canoeing, cooking, and traveling with my friends as family. Lastly, I have dreams of becoming an anesthesiologist, going into space, becoming rich, and to serve/volunteer for the needs of others. All in all, these images represent my identity, interests, heritage, and culture, this is who I am.
For my Cultural Plunge, I participated with Project Excell (Extending College Education for Lifelong Learning). This is a group that meets on campus, in the union, every Saturday morning from 9:00-11:00 AM. Each participant has a developmental disability and they come from various places around Manhattan. Project Excell offers around 4 different classes for the participants to choose from, which range from dancing/theatre to the history of Nigeria. After completing a “session,” the participants go through a graduation ceremony and then begin a different type of class for the next few weeks. I joined this group as a student ambassador, who assists the classroom teachers while building relationships with and tending to the needs of the participants.
Overall, my goal was to create a piece that would soothe my worries about graduation and the future, and hopefully soothe other people’s worries as well. By creating my piece and using the colors and textures and materials I did, while placing it in a place that students walk by regularly, I hope I will achieve my goal. Goldsworthy inspired me in many different ways, and I think I created something from his inspiration to inspire others and assuage fears.
Rather it represented my efforts. Tackling an unideal situation head-on and using the distress it caused me as motivation are the trademarks of a growth mindset. People who have a growth mindset, in comparison to those with a fixed mindset, tend to have a better idea of who they are because they recognize their strengths and weaknesses (Dweck 11). Taking into account of their weaknesses is only part of the picture. Actively seeking to improve upon their faults, is what truly differentiates someone who believes that traits can be cultivated or are already carved in stone. Pushing past my failures produced success. That being said, how did I end freshman year fearlessly taking on new challenges to graduating high school as a content, unimproved writer?
While our parents offer themselves to help us grow as civilized human beings, one of the most important things they do is present to us our culture. As a small child, my parents introduced me to the world, and what a wonderful place it can or can’t be. Different traditions were taught to me throughout my years and these developed into the fundamental ideas for my lifestyle and culture. The idea of culture that we all share is extremely complex, so it is hard to define any parts of it without the use of symbolism. In order to define my culture, I selected three objects to represent me and my culture in a broad spectrum. However odd these objects may seem, I chose an aluminum ring, a computer and a Christmas stocking. These particular items have impacted me greatly; they have influenced my life forever. Hence my ring, stocking and computer represent me and my ever developing culture.
When I was young, my parents introduced to me to the world using a very black and white approach. Everything was labelled as either right or wrong, good or bad with nothing in between. At the same time, I was exposed to two different cultures, two ways of life: One, my Indian culture and heritage handed down to me by parents, and the other, the American culture that embodied my peers and surroundings. My black and white approach to thinking led me to believe that I had to choose one culture, being a part of both was not an option in my mind.
This week in class we have been making a collage on ourselves. I chose this background on the collage because who doesn’t like the American Flag. The very main picture on the project is the picture of me. It was the only picture of me that we had that we could print. Two of the cultural pictures are a picture of crawfish and Jazz because of my Cajun heritage. Another picture is the Bald Eagle with the American Flag under its wings. The reason for that picture is because I’m very patriotic and I would do anything for America. Next, the Indian picture comes from my ancestors who were Indians back in the day. The last of the cultural pictures is the cross and I have the cross because I’ve grown up in a christian environment and am a christian.
My culture identity, as I know it as is African American. My culture can be seen in food, literature, religion, language, the community, family structure, the individual, music, dance, art, and could be summed up as the symbolic level. Symbolic, because faith plays a major role in our daily lives through song, prayer, praise and worship. When I’m happy I rely on my faith, same as when I’m sad, for I know things will get better as they have before.
Completing my education will bring extreme change to my Native American community. Everyday I pray that with my degree in Environmental Studies will make a positive impact on my Native homelands. Living on two reservations in the past years, I have seen the trouble with the water and the excessive litter on the precious land. Ten years from now I want to be able to say that I made a difference and helped solved those water and litter problems going on in my communities. That is just the beginning. After I bring change to my communities I will help other Native American communities and beyond with their problems. My lifelong goal is to be the best problem solver. My lifelong goal is to fulfill the wishes my grandparents and great grandparents
“Class,” I announced, “today I will teach you a simpler method to find the greatest common factor and the least common multiple of a set of numbers.” In fifth grade, my teacher asked if anyone had any other methods to find the greatest common factor of two numbers. I volunteered, and soon the entire class, and teacher, was using my method to solve problems. Teaching my class as a fifth grader inspired me to teach others how important math and science is. These days, I enjoy helping my friends with their math homework, knowing that I am helping them understand the concept and improve their grades.
For our art assignment last week, we made collages. It was a very fun and enjoyable activity, but for this week I am going to describe someone else’s collage. Today I will be describing Brandy Corsaro collage. It has a great detail and is very creative. It has a lot of originality to it and other aspects. First the collage is cut into a white circular shape with red lines, which is a baseball. I interpreted that the style of which it was cut and the symbol meant that they play the sport or have a involvement within the sport. The pictures that this person included in her college are very unique and show a lot of different sides. In the first top of the collage it included pictures of puppys/dogs, the coast, food and exercising. This tells
The main critique of the Intellectual Heritage Program is that courses are too broad and too shallow. Their impact is insignificant because students don not retain much knowledge from two classes over the period of four years. It is reasoned, why should a student spend substantial portion of their college career learning information and material they will most likely forget by the time they graduate? Students are required only to take two semesters of MOSAIC classes, which is barely enough time to develop anything beyond an elementary proficiency in the content discussed, which is practically useless in the real world.
Every fall high school seniors around the globe are in a state of panic. Of course you are no stranger to this process, you have dealt with this stress firsthand. What process is being described you may ask? The process of applying to college. Each year seniors scramble to submit applications, transcripts, and letters of recommendations to the schools of their choice. These documents are essential for nearly all students who want to advance to an institution of higher learning, but for many the paper trail does not end there. Seniors interested in a career in art, well specifically in visual art, need one more thing to obtain that sparkling acceptance letter. That missing link is a portfolio.
Memory is a communication and social interaction. Maurice Halbwachs study states that memory depends on socialization and communication and it can be analyzed as a function of social life (A., Eril, & Nunning, 2010). “Memory enables us to live in groups and communities, and living in groups and communities enables us to build memory” (Eril, A., & Nunning, 2010, p. 110).
Italy is a very special place for Giacomo Virdone. He grew up in a small town called Montevago, Sicily. My grandfather was 17 years old when he left Sicily and moved to Venezuela with his family. He lived there for about 4 years till he came to America for work at the age of 21. He has been living in America ever since.
At no point in life can you be perfect at anything, but you can prepare yourself for the adventures of life. One of life’s biggest challenges is marriage. Marriage requires preparation emotionally and spiritually. Marriage is considered to be one of the hardest aspects of life to control. Merging two different customary lifestyles into one can be difficult especially since the feelings of both are involved. I have learned both the numerous ways to destroy and build a successful marriage. Marriage is the union of man and woman becoming as one flesh according to God’s law and the law of the land.
