First practicum session In our first group practicum consisting of myself, Hannah, Brianne, Andrea, Larke and Colton had the opportunity to understand our participants’ (Mikayla, Makayla and Caleb) ability and skills through practicing different activities. All participants engaged with the activity except Mikayla who it was challenging for me to build a mutual relationship with. I think that Mikayla is not interested in interacting with groups but rather she feels more comfortable spending her time with individuals. Therefore, I put the effort to try and get some success in building a relationship with her but she was not reachable. We had the chance to play with 8- pin bowling and they were set in a way that they were close to the participants so that we can test their ability of aiming. As the game passed by, we extended the distance of playing field a bit farther to make it more fun and challenging at the same time. Following these adaptations, skills were successfully executed by our participants, both our group practicum and participants moved to the next activity. The following activity involved assisting our participants to play basketball. The way we set the game was in different levels, the first level we had was the short hoop, we observed that they were able to score easily. After that, we took them to the next level which was the long hoop, we observed that Caleb was able to score more than once, whereas, Makayla scored only scored one time. Through this game, we were able to observe our participants’ movement skills and their throwing ability. Following our basketball activity, both our practicum group and participants played Frisbee. I spent most of the time talking with Caleb while he was being assessed by Colton, I tried to motivate him and give him advice such as knowing how to swim and when it came into jumping off the pool he was so afraid and shaking on the edge of the pool, so I asked Colton to be closer to him and grab him so that he can feel secure to jump and eventually he did it. As previously mentioned in my planning stage, I had chosen to assist ‘David’ to partake in a group basketball game for completion of my HNC Social Care Graded Unit project. In studying David’s support plan; I had identified his social skills needed slight improvement, with his self-motivation needing most encouragement. I believe the group sports activity we planned and performed met these objectives. Additionally, my placement supervisor has forwarded confirmation of the successful completion of this task via email to my senior lecturer.

There is more pressure not to mess up. However, when she is with her peers, she can rest easy as they are around the same academic level and she knows that, like her, they are fallible. There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. She was scared to try the balance beam; however, when I offered to help she ran away. I began to start small by reading her a book, staying close by at play time, and comforting her when she was upset. By the end of the month she allowed me to help her try the balance beam because she trusted me. Since then, I have built a strong relationship with the child, but also a bond with her family. Not only have I learned that relationship building is important in the field of occupational therapy, I have seen how important problem solving is. While observing an outstanding therapist in the school setting, I learned about how she needed to adjust from child to child. For example, a child was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, had a vision impairment, and low motivation. She explained to me that motivating the child was challenging. The child did not want to move the bears that were on the table to the bucket the therapist was holding. The therapist accepted the challenge willing, turned the lights down low, shook the bucket so the child could locate the bucket with his ears, and explained to him that if he did this task he could earn two minutes on the iPad. The child seemed motivated; thus, he started to attempt the task the therapist had given him. Millions of children worldwide participate in a multitude of sports, either in school or outside of school. As they grow older, they get better, but some of them stop playing. We have discussed that the best and sometimes oldest of the kids (in their age groups) are given more chances and more opportunities, as well as better coaching. This results in them gaining more experience and practice. Ultimately, some of them end up being national or world-class athletes competing and representing their country. In order for that to happen, they have to be recognized as talented and be presented with a chance to become great.

My experience as the facilitator was at first never racking and hard to deal with. Therefore, my underlying goal was to focus on the here and now and how I would be able to utilize what I have learned in class. When we recorded the video in our class with Brittney we talk about the circle of casualty. In other words I was able to properly identify the patterns in her behavior when communicating with her husband, and how both fall into the same patterns and caused there to be and endless circle. Furthermore, I was able to use some of the language we talk about in class. For example “What I am picking up on is? “, “Is that correct?” and so for.
