Bowling culture, as observed in your local bowling alley, revolves around objects like shoes, alley markings, and bowling balls. Throughout the following essay, I discuss how these objects have influenced bowling culture and how the culture has influenced them. Bowling has been losing popularity in the United States. To save the sport, we need to study bowling culture and determine what is working and what isn’t. Bowling culture is one that is constantly changing and requires a strategic mindset be successful. When going to the local bowling alley, you are going to have to rent shoes. Rented bowling shoes commonly come in the colors red and blue. One could see this as a simple design choice, but a closer look reveals these colors have a more …show more content…
The sole of a bowling shoe is made slippery in order to slide around the floor with ease. The heel of the shoe is usually made of rubber. It is used as a brake when sliding. With these shoes, bowlers are able to take complete control of their movement. This reveals that bowling culture puts priority on control. Bowling shoes are made using leather. Leather is known to be an insulator of heat. This was most likely kept in mind when designing the shoes. Heat leads to sweat and sweat leads to a restriction of fluidity when taking a step. This leather is used to prevent the heat and sweat from negatively impacting ones performance. Bowling culture emphasizes the importance of mastering ones bodily functions. Bowling culture is heavily influenced by the desire for strategic superiority over ones opponent.
In order to gain this superiority, one must become familiar with the bowling lane. The bowling lane an extremely important part of the sport and features a variety of different markings. Close to the center of the bowling lane, a pattern of arrows can be seen. These arrows are clearly pointing towards the bowling pins. It almost seems to represent a hunting type scenario if one looks at the lane’s arrows as actual arrows. These arrows have been

Several factors are providing the sport with the opportunity to thrive. Because the sport emphasizes working for the strategic advantage, those that use brain power will flourish. The culture is also easily adapts to change. Bowling is known to allow those low on the social pyramid to rise to the top. Bowling culture, while it may be losing popularity, seems to be an accepting sport where you don 't need physical strength to excel, but a complex psychological mindset. It is necessary to study these bowling qualities in order to make the sport relevant again. We know what must be done to save the sport, but is it a sport worth
Transition: First, I want to talk about the equipment used in the game of bowling.
Wikipedia gives us following definition of a bowling ball: “A bowling ball is a piece of sporting equipment used to hit bowling pins in the sport of bowling. Ten-pin bowling balls are typically hard spheres with three holes drilled in them, one each for the ring and middle fingers, and one for the thumb.”

The presence of activity and sport is found within cultures and societies all over the world, and throughout history. Activity in the form of sport can often be the purest form of expression for a society or individual. The sporting world is often thought to be a microcosm of the actual world with the problems and issues of society still being ever present in the sporting community. Since sport can be used as an expression of self, it is no wonder that sport is often a reflection of the society that it occupies. One such society that was deeply impacted by the role of sport is that of Native American boarding school students in the 1800’s and 1900’s. These students lived tough lives but just like how it had helped other cultural societies, sport was able to provide these students with basic needs of autonomy and pride.
1. It has become much harder to identify the true and amateur-taught values around sport in our culture. The passion for competition, the aspect of a team, and the actions of sportsmanship are deep values that sports act to instill. It becomes one of the most important ways to teach those values to our young and unfortunately is becoming easy to forget. Throughout the semester we scrutinized sports, looking at their influence, role, and meaning in our American society today. Two foundations to view sport, critical and functionalist theory, were brought upon early in the semester, laying groundwork for looking at the rest of the topics. To better understand these two view points a working definition of each is needed. The three C’s of: capitalism, coercion and commercialism help describe the critical/conflict theory and view of sport in our United States. When looking with this viewpoint some of sport’s purposes in society include, promoting and expanding capitalistic drives as well as showing the power and privilege of elite groups within society. (Coakley, 2001) On the contrary the ...

Softball has been played for some time now, by many people and by different countries . In fact softball was a creation by a man that also helped give people the idea of baseball as well. Till this very day softball has been apart of the olympics since the early 1990’s . When trying to get softball into the olympics wasn’t as easy as getting baseball into the olympics. The new candidates for the new Olympic softball team can easily help get them back in the game, and maybe make history.
Sports in the United States are not only looked at as entertainment, but a way of life. Baseball once looked at as Americas pass time has taken a back seat. College football changed American culture by opening doors for masculinity, feminism, race diversity and the, disconnect between athletes and the general population.
Abstract: Society is affected every day by many different kinds of sports. These sports often govern society's way of life. People all over the nation turn their TVs to sporting events, such as golf, during the weekends. Scott Stossel states that "more than six million Americans enjoy watching golf on the weekends." Parents use sports as a teaching tool for their children. Kids learn teamwork and discipline from team sports programs and sports have also helped many students with their grades. Kids who want to compete in school sports are taught to keep their grades up or they won't be able to play, but the greedy coaches and schools often look around grades to keep their "star athletes" in the games. Adults have been affected by sports in their bank accounts. Tax increases for funding a new stadium, golf course and even school programs have hurt the middle class Americans. Sports have taken control of small communities and soon will take control of society
“There's kind of a Zen aspect to bowling. The pins are either staying up or down before you even throw your arm back. It's kind of a mind-set. You want to be in this perfect mind-set before you released the ball.” Jeff Bridges describes bowling to be black or white; one pin can not both be up and down. However, the character whom Jeff Bridges portrays in the classic bowling noir film The Big Lebowski, the Dude, is far from black and white. Once he was an ex-social justice warrior protesting the Vietnam war, now he is hanging out with a disgruntled Vietnam vet. With a joint in his mouth and a White Russian in his hand, the Dude goes through life without a care, only waiting for his turn to bowl. Throughout the movie, the Dude is dragged into a series of unfortunate events, none of which are his idea. What originally started off with nothing more than a piss-stained carpet spawned into a faux kidnapping and the death of the Dude’s beloved friend, Donny. The plot,
Athletics in this country are bigger than ever. Today, more people are attending sporting events than ever before. Sports have a truly unique ability; they bring people of all races, genders, and social classes together forming one common bond, the well-being of the home team. For all the good sports bring, however, a growing majority of fans are becoming more and more disenchanted with the high priced industry.

This well-known anonymous quotation conveys the message that sport is the game which has some rules and custom. It is not only for fun and entertainment, but there are also some benefits of playing sports and which gives some important lessons for life. Every kind of physical sports is healthy because it involves running, jumping, stretching, mind skills and much more. There are so many sports available in the world nowadays, but we can categorize them by the numbers of players, the three main categories are individual sport, dual sport and team sport.
The main goals behind Sport Education are to help students become knowledgeable about different sports and activities to the point where they can participate in these outside of the classroom to stay active. Also it teaches execution and strategies and encourages competitiveness. People in both ancient and modern societies have enjoyed playing sports in the spare time. The different shapes of athletic equipment, uniforms, and balls such as basketball, baseball, football, and soccer ball are designed differently to serve the purpose of their sports Also, each sport has been developed in various ways.
Sports, a very popular past time today, have been around since ancient times. Greek Olympic Games featured events from chariot races, javelin throws, to wrestling. In addition, a game similar to soccer was played in China by the second century BC. In England, a violent rugby type game was even played to settle feuds between villages. With the development of the industrial revolution and the creation of the first public schools, sports decreased in violence and were played more recreationally and constructively. Basketball was invented to help the youth in New England spend their energy in the winter months. Since the early 1900’s sports have been a key experience in the United States (“History of Sports”). I have played sports for many years, and the experience has helped me grow significantly as an individual.
