Overview
Taking the time to acknowledge the present is a difficult thing for me to do. My strength has been to be a great planner and anticipate issues before they occur. To think about three good things means that I literally have to stop thinking about the future and realize that the past or present has occurred on how it impacted me. By thinking about the good things, it allowed me to mentally relive the positive feelings and brought a smile to my face. It wasn’t an inner peace experience, but rather a more content feeling. One that feels good, but was short lived once life and the things around me come back into focus.
The other dilemma that occurred was that I started to “think” about the good things. This is my nature state of processing. Soon I realized that I need to “feel” the good things if I truly wanted to see how this exercise could offer an alternative impact in my life. Thus, I tried to center my thoughts and push them aside while allowing the feelings to move from second nature to the forefront of my state of mind. My daily exercise of reflecting upon the three good things that impacted my day became an exercise that concluded the day itself. After a long day at work, I would close my door and think about what I was grateful for and what made me happy.

This happiness is much different than my personal happiness. Instead of “thinking” about what makes me happy, my family happiness is the result of how I “feel”. Relics and artifacts are symbolic, material possessions important to one's subculture. Relics are from the past; artifacts are from the present. These traditions, relics, and artifacts help shape the personalities of individuals and how they relate with others. Individuals know about these items through storytelling in the subculture. When the word “family” is discussed most people think of mothers, fathers, and other siblings. Some people think of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even cousins and more on the pedigree tree. Without family in people 's lives they would not be the same people that they grew up to be today and in the future. When people hear the word family they think about, the ones who will help them in any way they can whether it 's money, support, advice, or anything to help them succeed in life. Family will forever be the backbone of support. They are the ones who support their children during those life decisions. Family is not always blood related. Finally family is forever, family will never go away.
All of the theories/concepts discussed in this paper have helped to change the course of my life in a very positive way. Being mindful has taught me to be more open to new experiences and points of view; being religious helped me cope with many negative situations in my life; using Fredrickson’s undoing hypothesis taught me how to think positive in negative situations; having flow taught me how to be more focused; having time affluence taught me how to value the more important things in life over money; and having hope keeps my spirit up and prevents me from giving up on my goals. All these concepts/theories are very important towards positive living and they have definitely helped me deal with many situations in a more positive manner.

The social institution I have chosen to address is that of family. Many of us have role models in our lives and to most people role models are athletes and movie stars, but to me a role model is much more. To me a role model is a person who has positively influenced someone in life, and is not a person filled with selfishness and greed. They help shape someone’s personality, and characteristics. They are people who someone can look up to for advice in a hard situation, and know that they will give those words of wisdom. They will never judge our past actions, instead only look to help because they really care. A role model is someone who we should never feel awkward talking to about our problems. A perfect role model for me is my mother. She is a wonderful human being. She’s smart, wise, ambitious, patient and such a loving person. There are no words that can describe my gratitude towards her, but through this essay I will describe some of her characteristics that makes her my role model.
