In one of my favorites books Anna Karenina written by Leo Tolstoy says "I think... if it is true that there are as many minds as there are heads, then there are as many kinds of love as there are hearts." (135-6) This quote really reflects the essence of the term "Diversity". For me diversity does not relies on skin color, height, weight. other, but that's not necessarily bad. Each perspective is a good way to learn and shape the mind. I perceive diversity as a way of learning and understanding myself but the people around me. Diversity entails responsibility. I can't approach an individual who thinks differently than me and insult the person because I'm not capable of accept the perspective provided by him/ her. It's just morally and ethically incorrect. I previously explained diversity in the context of how I connect and apply it to my life.
Working with a diverse group is the best way to obtaining usable information. I once worked with a team to participate in the Blue Lobster Bowl Competition at MIT. I honestly expected for all of us to have the same knowledge--oh, boy, I could've not been more mistaken--each of them had an area of specialty. Just by listening to each of their answers I quickly because knowledgeable in various aspects of marine biology. To expand on this I can obtain the most valuable skills or set of actions from others.
As for myself I not only acquire information from other but I also transmit my perspectives. In most cases I will always play as the Devil's advocate to help my peers to challenge themselves. Furthermore, I push them to develop more possible answers to all the possible outcomes they might face. In cultural terms I am not so good in showing my roots, furthermore I barely talk about my culture. Not that I'm ashamed of being Hondurian, I was raised in a city so I don't a lot to share.
In conclusion, diverse people are great to learn new ideologies and cultures. All around us we can find diversity in people. I as a person learn from them more than I learn from myself. Diversity, is a learning experience for all. And every single person has experienced diversity in pretty diverse
ways.
When people hear the word 'diversity', they often think in terms of black and white. I believe the true meaning of diversity is not simply about skin color, economic background or the face value of any other characteristic, rather it is the increased knowledge and sensitivity gained from unique experiences. The strength of diversity then comes from having many points of view and trying to reconcile them by finding common truths or resolving differences amongst people. Being a person of mixed heritage, my father is black and my mother is white, has definitely affected my life and contributed to the development of qualities that enhance my ability to embrace the uniqueness of those around me. Being raised in a single parent household and the values passed on to me by my mother have also been strong influences in my life. My greatest contribution to my community is the ability to create relationships between people of diverse backgrounds and a desire to understand others' beliefs.
Dental professionals have a commitment to respect diversity and create equity of access to dental care for everyone (GDC, 2014). Diversity describes any dimension that can be used to differentiate an individual from others. It requires understanding that each individual is unique and accepting and respecting these individual differences (QCC,2013). These differences could be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status or other ideologies (QCC, 2013). Understanding the impact that these differences may pose is vital in dealing professionally with people from diverse backgrounds and delivering equal treatment for all. Equality refers to identical treatment in dealings quantitates and values (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Thus, creating equality for all might not mean that there are no disparities between different groups. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and the equality of outcomes and involves recognizing aspects of a system that may disadvantage a certain group and correcting them (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Therefore, in order to overcome potential pitfalls that may create inequity to access, there is a need to explore the different factors encountered in our diverse society that may create these issues. As an example, patients from different ethnic backgrounds may be faced with barriers accounting for the less frequent use of dental care (CQC. 2010). This group will be used as an example and some of the issues behind this inequity of access will be looked at further.
Overall I believe that diversity within Britain has really made a positive difference to the country and helped the country develop and progress. Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors comes together as one making a superb side dish. There is becoming a larger push to include students of all abilities in regular classroom activities.
