My Early Childhood Literacy

As humans we are born with an innate ability for language. We begin to develop speech and language skills from birth which is greatly influenced by our home environment, language spoken including dialect and what we are also taught in grade school. These skills become a foundation for reading and writing development. My literacy development has been impacted by many memorable milestones from early childhood, through grade school, to current literacy experiences and challenges which have also given me many headaches. Yet, this has been valuable to my growth, current achievements and self-confidence to pursue my career goals.

Since my parents never spoke straight Spanish to me, I never fully learned Spanish and often the sentences were composed of mostly English. For this reason my English was good, but became better once I started grade school and started to hear full English.
My reading and writing memories begin for me in grade school. I was always creative, music and art always trumped reading. If I was holding a pencil to write, I was more likely to be found drawing. My earliest memory reading was when I was in pre-K, I would come home from school and sit on the bed and read to my mother’s belly while she was pregnant with my little sister. We would often read books from the Little Golden Book series. It wasn’t until the third grade that I remember reading a book that was enjoyable. Mrs. Riley was my third grade teacher and assigned a book called “Pippi-Longstocking” to the class, little did she know that was one of my favorite movie series. For the first time when it was reading time I was excited not only to read the book, but because she also had beanbags we could sit in. Later, I was confronted with challenges like A.R. points, which is short for accelerated reader. In my frameworks class we were given several writing assignments and projects that required us to reflect on our learning styles and habits. It was a very informative class with lots of self-reflection and opened my eyes to some bad habits I possess that have impacted my reading and writing issues. For example, I would often have a television on in the background or other things that grabbed just tid-bits of my attention here and there. Maybe texting a friend back and forward while reading or writing an assignment and what I have learned is multi-tasking is not a task humans can truly do. Multi-tasking is a term that was coined for computers. Doing most educational and job related tasks simultaneously is not usually the case and in fact it is usually us giving ourselves some sort of unfounded satisfaction believing we can get a lot done. When in reality it is our brains jumping back and forward from task to task very quickly. It is sometimes inevitable that we do this, but reminding myself and accepting this information as true has made some headway in my literacy as a college student and I am sure will continue when I start my career in the
