One of the decisions many high school students confront is what they want to pursue in life; some options are work, study at a university, or pursue a technical education. Some students chose to study at a university to explore different areas of studies to pursue. Every area of study has its own requirements in order to be successful in that area. In my personal career search, as many students experience, have the sometimes painful selection of what I want to do as an adult. It is that I have two professions that I would like to pursue, Architecture and Engineering. Many aspects may help select that career, including personal preferences, career path, employment rates, etc. The academic path of each one will be discussed as a reference point for a selection of a career.
Both careers require training and specialization in an area. Most degrees for these programs can only be obtained in a four year institution. Graduates studies are recommended to increase the likelihood of being hired after graduation. Students are encouraged to apply for internships, or real work experience in thei...
When we were little, we thought the word “Career” was not a big deal, but as a senior in high school, the word has become our reality as we start to finish our last semester. The question we’ve been asked all these years is, what do you want to be when you grow up? But our answer is simple: we don’t want to grow up. As an innocent kid it seemed like the time would never come, but it has. It’s time to get serious and really ponder this question.
Placing information in context is benefit when making a decision. It is helpful to review the historical events and available information to create a picture of where to go next. The purpose of this paper is to review the personal information from the career assessments taken in HS 585 Career Counseling at Bellevue University. The review will focus on this author’s personal results. This paper will combine the assessments with the author’s personal history to provide a context for future career goals.
Rising mostly through self-efficacy and outcome expectations, career-related interests foster educational and occupational choice goals (Bandura, 1997). Especially to the extent that they are clear, specific, strongly held, stated publicly, and supported by significant others, choice goals make it more likely that people will take actions to achieve their goals (Lent, Hackett, Brown, 1999). Their subsequent performance attainments provide valuable feedback that can strengthen or
Coming into college just a few short months ago I was unsure of what career or even what major I wanted to pursue. Even now as I work through this paper I was unsure as to the direction I wanted to take. Although what I have taken away from my first semester has lead me in the direction of field I feel comfortable pursing. I have always found the corporate business world interesting especially in the fields of computing and technology. This has led me towards the career of Solutions Architect.
I’ve just entered my senior year of high school. I know that this is a very important year. I have a lot of decisions to make and not much time to make them. These decisions will either make or break my life, and I want to make sure that I make them to the best of my ability because there is no turning back. I need to make sure I definitely want to attend college. The decision is totally up to me. There are many positives and negatives of attending college. Go over them, and then decide. I know myself better then anyone else, and I won’t let anyone else tell me what to do. I will make sure if I am going to attend college that I have something in mind that I will want to do, to succeed in. Choosing a major can be a very stressful situation so why not sit down and take some time to do it? Be creative, don’t rush, give yourself plenty of time and really think about what interests you in life. My major is something that I will want to enjoy, something that I will be doing for the rest of my life. Why would I want to be miserable at something I do in life? In two short essays: “College? What’s in It for me?” by Steven M. Richardson, and “What It Means to Be Creative”, by S.I. Hayakawa, I can relate to my major very well. Athletic Training is something that takes skill, as well as being creative in your own way. No two Athletic Trainers are the same. The more creative I am at whatever I do, the better off I will be. I hold the keys to all the doors that can ...
Thinking and discussing about our future and career path is a common topic that often occurs in any school-like setting, but can still be considered taboo to anyone who does not know what they would like to do with their lives, such as myself. The future is still quite broad and unknown, yet I am excited to discover what I will make myself capable of doing in order to thrive and enjoy my future. Although I do have an idea of what I would like to pursue, which is art, my results on the major and career assessment help in further convincing me that the art-field is meant to be the field most suitable for me although it does depict some exceptions.
There were many things I was able to attain while taking this course at Husson University. I strongly believe this class has inspired me to passionately follow my dreams and aspirations as I plan ahead for future life. After successfully completing the career project for this class, I was able to gain a greater value of the topic by uncovering my career-related interests and abilities, identifying occupations that matched my personality, and determining how I work best to draw out my creativity and productivity. My career choice for this assignment was an automotive design engineer, which requires an individual to pay very close attention to detail, while at the same time having a very creative and imaginative mind in order to perform well
Junior year is a detrimental point during the career of a high school student; terrors of future careers, college enrollment decisions, and the prospect of moving out flood the minds of nearly every soul. Lacking experience in various fields of careers, the concept of deciding on a permanent lifestyle sends shudders throughout the entire being of students. Being a junior at Ridgeview High School, I am no exception; although I have an idea of what career I intend to pursue, my concrete career decision is more of a half formed pit of mud. Initially, and for several years, my intentions were to attend Virginia Tech and achieve a degree in Software Engineering, yet, with further experience in my schools robotics program, my opinion has be reopened to a more broad spectrum of fields. For this reason I wish to enroll in a job shadowing program under a variety of engineers to study the daily
After reading these modules and understanding the stages of career development, I was able to identify multiple activities relevant to the four stages in order to assist students transition from school life to their post-school life. These four stages of career development, facilitate the student’s not only to distinguish what they enjoy doing, but satisfy their future as well. As a school counselor, I will design workshops to aid students explore their interest for their future life as a member of our society. According to Jennifer Curry author of the book “Career counseling in P-12 schools” stated that “students do better when they have an understanding of what is expected from them”. “The four stages of the career development are: career awareness, career exploration, preparation for the future career, and career placement” (Iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu).
“But most people have multifaceted interests and abilities and could probably be successful and happy in several fields,” notes McCoy. Reasoning with options, interests, and abilities provides a wide range of career paths and prevents one from becoming limited to a simple passion or love desired career path. When one is reasonable with abilities and interests in different career options, it is easier to find a career especially in the economy of the United States today. Susanne Peckham states, “During the past couple of years, college graduates have faced a very challenging job market.”(Peckham.2011) This elaborates on McCoys questioning of the commencement speakers advice to students to ‘Do What You Love’ during such a “tough labor market” (McCoy.2013). Reasoning with one's interests and options leads to a well thought out career path that provides what one needs to make an
Ever wondered what it is that compels people toward a certain career, or why they excel at certain things they might enjoy? Certain careers that an individual might enjoy and excel at often depends on their personality type, as well as their interests and income requirements. My personality type is labeled as INTJ- Architect- and it fits me completely, as the career I am looking for is an Architect (16Personalities). Although the time it would take before I could follow up on the career to be an architect is about half a decade, it would meet my income requirements as well as my interests in building/constructing and strategic planning. It also would be something I would thoroughly enjoy- which in turn will affect my performance positively.
Choosing a career is one of the most important decision most of us ever make. It is considered to be one of the vital developmental task of adolescents (Hirschi, 2009; Erikson, 1968, Creed, Patton & Prideaux, 2006) has to face. Adolescence is generally recognized as a critical time in the development of career. On the other hand, nowadays, most adolescents tend to be more independent in many aspects of life, especially in choosing the career they want to pursue. However, several studies have shown that some face the challenging task of deciding on their individual careers, which according to Creed, et al (2006), is not surprising given the wide array of career and educational options, and the need to be informed about one’s needs, values, goals and the information needed about the field of career. In accordance with the previous researches, Ma & Yeh (2005), stated that certainty and indecision are two variables that have been designed to assess career decision status. Career certainty refers to one's degree of certainty of having made a career decision while career indecision is defined as an inability to make a decision about the career one wishes to pursue
Ever since I’ve been little I’ve never liked doing tom boyish stuff, I’ve always loved decorating, making stuff such as with arts and crafts. It took me a while to realize what I wanted to do my Senior project on because I knew I wanted to do something based on something that would actually benefit me in my future after High School. I didn’t want to work on something that I was never going to use in my life, that’s why I decided to do it on Interior design. I chose Interior design because that’s the career I plan to go after High School, for years I thought I wanted to become a Veterinarian but this past summer I went to tour the Art Institute of Austin and looked into their Interior design program, it really caught my attention. I don’t really know much about it, just the basics of what there really is to know, I really want to research about Interior design because this is what I plan to do in my future, therefore it’s something I would take seriously.
Throughout my life I wondered what I should become, a doctor, a businessman, an engineer, but until last year I figured out that engineering is the best thing for me. When I first decide to become a doctor it is only because of the money that is made becoming a doctor. Right now, I know money is only a second factor of deciding which profession you want to become. “Job dissatisfaction is the number one cause of unhappiness among people in the U.S. job sectors” (Landis 48). When I considered becoming an engineer first, I asked a question to myself, is this a good fit for me? I love to help people and change the way they live in today. “Engineering is the application of science to the common purpose of life” (Landis 36), which I loved to do with my life. One of the first thing about engineering that caught my attention, led me to realize that it is the career for me and getting a bachelor of science degree in engineering, is the fact that the absolutely no doors are closed from there on out and I have the ability to become whatever I want. In my opinion, one of the biggest benefits in engineering is the freedom and diversity offered in this career. The second thing that really caught my
My ambition to become an architect was ignited when I started watching a show called “How I met your mother”. The main character was an architect, and I thought to myself that was an aspirational career. So, I researched the discipline to have a deeper understanding of the skills and qualifications needed. As well as, I am in love the whole idea of how simple strokes and sketches can create such masterpieces in the world
