In taking the Multicultural Quiz, it really opened my eyes to how non-multicultural I really am. My overall score was a thirty-seven, which means that I was raised around people who were much like myself (to an extent). The neighborhood for example that I have lived in my whole life is for the most part a white community, middle class I would say, probably mostly religious Christians. I fit into all but one of those categories: religion. Being Atheist, one could argue that perhaps I was different than others in the community—I just simply had never gone to church growing up. There were poor kids, middle classed like myself, even rich kids. We had the Christian kids, the Jewish kids and even atheists like myself in my schools. My education one could say was fairly multicultural. I never belonged to any clubs or sports teams of which I can rate myself on as this quiz asks, but what I saw was a non-diverse grouping of those that did play sports or be part of a club—typically white females were cheerleaders, white males were typically the football players, your white Christian kids/middle to upper class kids were the student council, your Indian kids were basketball players, …show more content…
I relate this to how really anyone, including myself, grows up in terms of how they socialize with members of another class or another race. My parents tended to associate with white, middle-classed individuals that often never went to church just like we never went to church—mimicking that behavior, it is no wonder why I associated with those similar to me instead of those that fall into another set of group(s). As a kid, I didn’t understand what race meant or its implications. I was pretty much oblivious to it. Race meant getting some kids together and running a foot race. The one who made it to the end of the block won. I never felt that I was special because of my race. Nor did I feel discriminated against. Of course, I was sheltered from race and racism. I never knew any people of color because I grew up in an all-white, lower-to-middle-class blue-collar neighborhood. I never encountered someone of another race, and my parents made sure of it. I wasn’t allowed outside of our own neighborhood block, as my mother kept a strong leash on me. Not until I was much older did I wander outside the safety net of our all-white neighborhood.
Intersectionality is a term used to describe a situation whereby an individual has multiple identities and as result, the person feels that he or she doesn’t belong to one community or another. Because of the many conflicts in an individual’s identities, he or she could be a victim of multiple threats of discrimination (Williams, 2017). The discrimination could be a result of race, gender, age, health and ethnicity among others. To give an example, a black transgender woman could be discriminated in the workplace because of being black and also because she is transgender. From an intersectionality perspective, the woman faces multiple threats of discrimination because of the overlapping identities of gender and race and therefore the transwoman faces a bigger struggle (Barber, 2017). Transwomen of color will most likely encounter prejudices in the form of homophobia, racism or sexism in many dimensions of their life. The differences observed in society can be seen in almost every aspect of life and can separate every human from another through choice and perception. Considering a simplistic example where one driver in the United States drives on the right side of the road, compared to a European driver that drives on the left side of the road. The thing about multicultural education that surprised me the most was how much opposition there is to multicultural education. I would think, by now, people would be able to see how unbalanced the current educational curriculum is and welcome the inclusion of aspects from other cultures. I have read arguments ranging from, multicultural education is inherently racist to multicultural education promotes Islam and is indoctrinating our youth with terrorist ideas. Like most hot button issues in this country, people in positions of power will use everything possible, including fear-mongering, to further their agenda.
The 1978 implementation of Australia's multiculturalism policy was founded on the principles social cohesion. This calls for individuals to assimilate and share the same values dictated by the Australian Constitution. This has been critical in assimilating migrants to educate them with the country’s values and norms and protect minority groups from discrimination (Department of Social Services, 2015). Whilst the Australian Government’s multicultural program has been coined as the best in the world, many analyst argue that it does not really reflect diverse ethnicities as a majority of migrants have been from Anglo-Celtic. In fact, Sir James Gobbo AC, Chairman, Australian Multicultural Foundation, Australia (2014), claims its difficult to exist assess whoever the program is successful because it is in its infancy and has not had to deal with complex issues such as extreme religious diversity and cultural difference.
The world is currently undergoing a cultural change, and we live in an increasingly diverse society. This change is not only affect the people in the community but also affect the way education is viewed. Teaching diversity in the classroom and focusing multicultural activities in the programs can help improve positive social behavior in children.
