To start with, culturally responsive teaching practices recognize the validity of the cultural custom contained by several ethnic groups. In other words, it considers whether different approaches of learning are necessary and worthy in the formal learning. Furthermore, culturally responsive teaching practices are fundamental because they create links between school experience and home and between lived social cultural realities and academic abstraction (Gay, 2000). Culturally Responsive Teaching Practice is Multidimensional It is appropriate to know that this teaching practice is “multidimensional” because it involves getting new knowledge, performance assessment, techniques of instructing, classroom climate, the content of curriculum, relationship between a teacher and student. There is need for teachers from different disciplines to cooperate in disseminating concepts of a single culture as students play an active role in evaluating their performance (Banks, 2006).
To be brief, culturally relevant teaching "is a pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural referents to impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes (Ladson-Billings, 2009, pp. 20)." The emphasis of culturally relevant teaching is to understand that children have different needs and in order to deal with them in the best way possible is equitably. The inability to recognize these differences causes teachers to limit their ability to meet the student's educational needs and prevents them from being culturally relevant (Ladson-Billings, 2009, pp.37). Contrary to culturally relevant teaching, assimilationist teaching is a style that disregards a student's particular cultural characteristics. This teaching method follows a hierarchical model. Ladson-Billings overviews the concepts of cultural congruency, cultural appropriateness, cultural responsiveness, and cultural compatibility. These terms refer to the way teachers can adapt their language and teaching style to better reflect the culture and the language of their students. However, the problems students of color face, particularly African American students, goes beyond the school culture and climate not reflecting their community culture and climate. The primary issue is a lack of cultural synchronization among teachers and students and a need for culturally relevant practices.
Gloria Ladson-Billings supports this idea in her essay titled “’Yes, But How Do We Do it?’ Practicing Culturally Relevant Pedagogy” and also expands upon its importance by adding the insight of how teachers think about the social contexts, the students, the curriculum, and about instruction, all impact the students because how teachers regards these contexts get woven into their pedagogy, which create the very classrooms for learning.

This has been described as subtractive schooling (Bazron, Osher, & Fleischman, 2005). When this occurs, it likely contributes to the disproportionality of minority students in special education and discipline referrals. Culturally responsive practice does not mean fitting all students into a single mold; but rather, acknowledging and celebrating differences and working together to learn from one another. Madhlangobe and Gordon (2012) describe a case study in which an educational leader, parents, teachers, and students learn from one another in a collaborative effort to increase cultural competence and acceptance. In this case study, researchers followed an assistant principal in a Texas community who exemplifies culturally responsive leadership. Their research methods included observing, shadowing, interviewing, and collecting artifacts. Participants included the assistant principal, teachers, and parents. The authors aimed to identify patterns to explain why school staff acted the way they did and how they got to that point. Madhlangobe and Gordon categorized their findings into six themes necessary for culturally responsive leadership including: caring for others, building relationships, persistence and persuasiveness, being present and communicating, modeling cultural responsiveness, and fostering cultural responsiveness among

I decided to write about the influence of race and ethnicity on a person’s educational level. I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic where, within my social group, schooling and education was deemed as an essential part of life. In the United States, however, there exist a greater number of racial and ethnic groups, and it is evident that an achievement gap exists among these groups. Here, Dominicans are marginalized as part of a Hispanic minority group that does not achieve the educational status of other groups, such as Whites or Jewish. I chose to write about the disparity of education within races and seek to answer how race affects a person’s educational level.
The thing about multicultural education that surprised me the most was how much opposition there is to multicultural education. I would think, by now, people would be able to see how unbalanced the current educational curriculum is and welcome the inclusion of aspects from other cultures. I have read arguments ranging from, multicultural education is inherently racist to multicultural education promotes Islam and is indoctrinating our youth with terrorist ideas. Like most hot button issues in this country, people in positions of power will use everything possible, including fear-mongering, to further their agenda.
Culture is a powerful influence plays a big role in our interactions. Culture may also impact parenting style and a developing child. Having a strong sense of their own cultural history and the traditions associated with it helps children build a positive cultural identity for themselves. This also supports children’s sense of belonging and, by extension, their mental health and wellbeing. This class is crucial in understanding and working well parents, staff, and children. An effective educator understands how students’ cultures affect their perceptions, self-esteem, values, classroom behavior, and learning. As director, I need to use that understanding to help my students and staff feel welcomed, affirmed, respected, and valued.
