A California local basketball team called Richmond Oilers is the worst team in which no players exhibit any respect to each other and have no discipline to act. They only won 4 games last season and lost the rest of all games. With the retirement of the former coach, Ken Carter, who played for this school in 70s and held several school record, takes over the head coaching job position. Upon the arrival, he obligates that all players who want to stay in the team must sign in a contract with him which states that they must meet the academic success by attending to all classes, sit in the front row, wear dress shirts and ties on game days and no late to the practice. In order to enforce this contract, he punishes players who disobeys

Topic: Motivation and confidence. The definition of the motivation is what compels a person act toward a certain way. In this movie, Damien first attends the best local high school St. Francis with the best basketball player around the nation. Carter has very big expectation on him, but he decides to transfer to the worst place for only playing for his father. His decision comes from many aspects, including his self-confidence and motivation. Damien shows his confidence by telling his father that he can become the best one in the team. He is not arrogant by only saying that without putting any action. He makes the contract that he wants to sign in with this father to enforce his decision. Both extrinsic motivation (he can earn minutes by doing good) and intrinsic motivation (he loves doing it) drive him forward and make such as important decision alone. In sport psychology, it is thought that extrinsic motivation can affect intrinsic motivation. But in this case, Damien perceives the great value he can have upon performing good like gaining minutes, becoming a MVP and go to the best college with scholarship. Damien’s motivation helps him develop the confidence mentioned above; combine this factors together, he eventually wins the MVP and attends the military academy of West …show more content…
Topic: Coach athlete relationship. Coach is the center, the essence of a team. Without a coach, a team would not even exist. Sport psychologists define the five roles for a coach, including teacher, organizer, competitor, learner and mentor. This scene best depicts all roles. First of all, Carter is a good teacher. He is good at communicating with team players. He acts like a teacher that teaches everything that players need to know in order to success, either on or out of the court. Second, he is a god organizer, he schedules the practice time daily at 3 p.m. and does not allow any lateness. He knows when to let players play ball on the court and when to study off the court. Third, he is a good competitor. He bravely steps out and debates with others who do not understand his rationale. He wants all players in his team can be more successful. Fourth, he is a good learner. He is good at adapting. When the board decides to reopen the gym, he is happy and allow the player to study in the gym. Fifth, he is a good mentor. Carter was once a student in Richmond. He shares his experience with players. Tell them something is more important than just playing ball. All of these factors eventually make him a good coach and gain the respect from all
In John Feinstein’s Foul Trouble, Danny, a basketball player, experiences the tough NCAA restrictions. Terell and Danny were on their way to the most elite showcase basketball camp in the country. They arrive at the camp and make their way inside. All kinds of diverse reporters and television hosts swarmed Terrell. Danny was feeling as if he does not belong there. He walked into the building and sat on the bleachers. The whole place was teeming with college coaches. Danny could not wait to start the camp games. Coach Wilcox, Danny’s father, was also very eager.
Jim Valvano, otherwise known as “Jimmy V”, was a college basketball player, coach, and broadcaster. This paper will cover Jimmy and define his true leadership qualities. Jimmy was an icon in the sports world not only for his coaching ability. He taught the world that leaders need a vision, leaders need to connect with their followers, and that leaders learn from their followers. Jimmy defied the rules and transformed his players into exceptionally good players and even better people. He taught more than basketball to his players and reached outside of his coaching arena to touch the lives of people across the world.
Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
The first personal traits that Coach Dale was forced to exhibit were his toughness and his assertiveness. On his first night in Hickory he met the men of town in the barbershop who were all willing to provide their experience and insight on the team and how to coach. Coach Dale had enough self confidence to know that none of these “insights” were going to help the Hickory team win basketball games and let them know they weren’t welcome by turning his back and walking out. Additionally, he was forced to demonstrate his toughness twice more on the first day of practice by telling the temporary coach, “Secondly, your days of coaching are over,” and then by standing up to the group of men after he dismissed Buddy from the team. These actions made no friends of the men; however, th...
The concept I will be relating this movie to is intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. These types of motivation involve internal and external rewards. Intrinsic motivation is someone motivating themselves to do something for an internal reward. This
Abstract: Collegiate athletes participating in the two revenue sports (football, men's basketball) sacrifice their time, education, and risk physical harm for their respected programs. The players are controlled by a governing body (NCAA) that dictates when they can show up to work, and when they cannot show up for work. They are restricted from making any substantial financial gains outside of their sports arena. These athletes receive no compensation for their efforts, while others prosper from their abilities. The athletes participating in the two revenue sports of college athletics, football and men's basketball should be compensated for their time, dedication, and work put forth in their respected sports.
It does this when William, a poor, black, american, teenager, who has the dream of playing in the NBA is being interviewed about him getting a job when William says ”I gotta do this if I wanna play”. William knows that he has to earn money if he wants to pay for basketball gear and school fees if he wants to train and make it in the NBA. This quote tells us that William is working because of his dream, that he is motivated by his dream to work as working is necessary to achieve it. This text connects the the idea that dreams motivate people to improve themselves as it gives a clear example of how william is motivated by his dream to improve his financial standing and to work. James wanted us to understand that for people to achieve their dreams, that they will have to work hard to make it possible, as shown by William working all holidays when he could be
He decided the placement of all players, and what teams they would be in. When it came to Junior’s turn, Junior thought he was going to be in the C team, but surprisingly he got into the top team, the Varsity team as a Freshman. He was stunned, but when he asked why he was placed in the C team he said that he was one of the best shooters he had seen in a while, and that he would be their secret weapon. When Junior was given 3 stitches, Coach was there to comfort him and tell him that his team would be fine without him if he went to hospital. Later on, when Arnold was given a concussion both teams got into a series of shoving matches and push-fights. The tribal police had to pull twenty or thirty adult Spokane's off the court. Coach was passionate about that game, he was furious when the referees gave 4 of his players technical fouls to please the mainly Indian crowd. He cursed and screamed and was thrown out of the game. After the game, Coach went to see Junior in the hospital and apologized for putting him in the game, and that he should have cancelled the game completely because of the anger of the Indians that he left the reservation. He cared about his players and didn’t want them to run 50 laps of the gymnasium, he cared about their feelings while also being serious about letting them win. He's always quick to give Arnold words of encouragement and support. Before games Arnold

Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How does a coach become successful? I aim to answer all of these questions and more in my paper.
“A coach’s role is not to judge or disapprove of the way the coachee treats other people, or indeed how they live their life.” (Starr, J. (2011) p.33.)
The movie begins with Coach Carter taking a part-time, low-paid job coaching the basketball team at his old high school, Richmond High. At first, the boys are undisciplined and disrespectful. They also lost almost all of their games the previous season. Coach Carter presents the team with a contract with the following requirements: they have to maintain a 2.3 grade point average, they have to attend classes and sit in the front row, and they have to wear jackets and ties on game days.
He make sures his grades are above c average, or else they can’t go to practice or any games. This team makes it really far, they go go to the finals and win it. There is really different kinds of themes in this
