Managers may encounter difficulties while establishing self-directed, high performing teams. Identification of those difficulties is key to overcoming them and moving forward with the team process.
Misguided interpretation can come into play when the team lacks a clear and compelling vision and purpose for the organization. Teams need to know in which direction they are heading and a clear reason as to why they are heading in that direction and what it takes to make it to the destination as quickly and most efficiently. Without a clear vision team members tend to do whatever they want and want ever gets the job done and this can lead to the team members making sure that they do “over” work themselves cause lacking on the project. Accountability is very important for guiding behavior and making sure tasks get accomplished. When team members and team leaders are not accountable for their actions it can delay the whole process. The difficulty with accountability with self-directed teams is that there isn’t a single point of accountability so, if one person fails they all fail and one person succeeds they all succeed, this makes it nearly impossible for targeting accountability to an individual. Distrust can be a sign of accountability lacking in an organization and this can be contributed to people just being too busy with their own responsibilities and have no ideas as to what others are working on within the project. Providing clear guidelines along with structure will create effective leadership, as well as, requiring all team member to communicate their expectations. There are many positive results to effective leadership; higher levels of honesty, faster growth rate, team members are more involved, open communication, project stay on track, and the team develops an efficient process. Commitment to mission is important to have in a self-directed team as the team as a whole has a commitment to the same goal, otherwise team members would work alone and get off target a lot easier. Requiring mutual accountability within a team will give the team members a sense of knowledge that “they are all in this together” and that they are all accountable to every action. Therefor one team member is not doing all the work while others may be lacking and receiving credit for the accomplished goal. Open communication will guide the team to clearly understand what role they have and in which directed the team is heading in. Open communication is vital especially when dealing with conflict, as it is encouraged for team members to openly communicate their issues with the team and try to resolve their issues.
