Experience at MiHIN
Overview of the fall semester
This past semester I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to intern at the Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services, a company that is commonly referred to as “MiHIN”. At MiHIN, I was in the Finance and Accounting department where I worked along side three other full-time employees. The four months I spent at MiHIN were extremely beneficial because I was able to develop skills that are applicable to my future career aspirations, as well as, gain a better understanding of careers in finance and accounting.
Background of MiHIN MiHIN is a non-profit organization that was recently established in 2010. Every year MiHIN receives grants from the state of Michigan and our federal

MiHIN’s mission is quite simple, that mission is to improve the quality of healthcare. All of the employees at MiHIN are extremely passionate about improving the quality of healthcare, because the employees understand that improving healthcare results in improving the lives of patients. From my perspective as an intern, I saw the mission of improving healthcare each and everyday, even in the finance and accounting department. This mission motivates the workers at MiHIN, which results in a high intensity environment. As an intern, I saw the workload, tight deadlines and high stress within the workplace. Some may view a workplace like this as a negative, however, I saw this as a huge positive. It was exhilarating to see a group of motivated individuals show up each and every day with the mindset to better the lives of …show more content…
The Executive Director is the founder of MiHIN, every financial transaction must be approved by him. From an intern view, I have a mentor and a manager. My mentor is the Director of Finance, and my manager is the Accounting Manager. At MiHIN the Director of Finance was in charge of managing project progress and instructing the Accounting Manager how to distribute the workload amongst the Intern (myself) and the General Accountant. Every task I completed had to first be reviewed by my manger, then if approved, reviewed by my mentor.
My Role at MiHIN As a Finance/Accounting Intern, I never knew what to expect when I arrived at work. Each and everyday was a new challenge and full of new tasks. Due to the rapid pace at MiHIN, there was not a whole lot of predictability when it came to tasks. Below I have listed a few of the tasks and projects I was assigned while working at MiHIN.
- Cost analysis of various internal projects
- Creating and managing the Account Payable account “check register”
- Building budget to actual
Mission and vision statements communicate strategic goals. “To provide superior patient-centered care using appropriate and innovative evidence-based practices” is a mission better aligned with Amedisys new direction. Additionally, “Drive growth by delivering a full range of holistic health care services, while cultivating a culture of compassion” is a vision that could be used to inspire employees to achieve Amedisys’ purpose.
Centura Health’s mission is “We extend the healing ministry of Christ by caring for those who are ill and by nurturing the health of the people in our communities.” (Centura, 2014). This mission statement meets five of eight components. These five components are products or services offered, customers being served, growth and profitability, public image, and self-concept of business by the employee and stockholders. The product being offered is “caring for those who are ill and nurturing the health of the people”; Centura is a hospita...
My favorite assignment is the Industry Profile Report. This assignment allow myself to browse through companies that maybe one day I will be working for and see what jobs are open. I really appreciate this assignment.
This past week at my internship was rather busy. On Monday, I prepared the operation theatre and equipment required for a canine ovariohysterectomy. I observed the surgery as well as assisted a veterinary technician in monitoring the parameters of the anaesthetized patient. The rest of the day was then spent caring for the hospitalised patients making sure their cages were clean and that they were comfortable, as well as administering their medications. Also, I got to feed tablet medications to a cat by hand, which I found challenging and required a few tries before I succeed. Additionally, I aided the doctors in restraining patients for blood collection from the jugular and cephalic vein. I also observed in a consultation, how a fluorescein eye stain test is carried out to detect damage to the cornea.
Working in the health care industry takes a lot of courage and patience in order to deal with different individual’s personalities and to be equipped to handle stressful situations according to the issues at hand. As a senior consultant at the Practical Health Care Consulting firm, my supervisor has instructed me to spend three months at the Caring Angel Hospital. While at the hospital there are a few tasks for improving the quality of care, adding value to the organization, improving employee morale, etc. Although these obstacles will be a challenge, there is an opportunity for improvement. This will allow the Caring Angel Hospital to increase revenue and accomplish the goals that are established.

In the medical field, innovations, research and technology motivate the business to perform and deliver care in a new standard. Mayo Clinic has a logo of three shields that are interlocked, presenting patient care, research and education.
Quality and Leadership Expectations are two examples of how Medtronic as an organization accomplishes its mission, vision, and goals. Medtronic has achieved becoming a word provider of medical products through diligence and emphasis in quality. Quality Begins With Me is the Medtronic adopted motto and a badge card must be carried by every employee while on the job. The Quality Begins With Me badge card emphasizes quality patient-focused practices at all times. To be courageous, accountable, and preventative when an individual sees something that might hinder quality of the product or service provided to the patient. A second example of how Medtronic accomplishes its mission, vision, and goals is by emphasizing leadership expectations regardless
There were separate management structures maintained in the group with the CEO of NOL in Singapore and CEO in the United States reporting to the group CEO. This separation between owners and manager creates an agency relationship. This exist when one or more persons (the principal or principals) hire another person or persons) as decision making specialist to perform a service. In the modern corporation, managers must understand the links between
I have learned many things from participating in my internship. Before my junior year at college, I was shy and had insecurities about my abilities to work in the accounting industry. My internship experience can be divided into three sections. First, is the practice and experience that I have obtained which helped me towards my careers goals. Secondly, is the exposure to the basic structural organization of companies. Finally, is the opportunity to participate in solving real-world problems.

I am a junior at Princeton University where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a certificate in History and the Practice of Diplomacy. As someone with a knack for economic research and an interest in working for the federal government, I hope to have the opportunity to join the Economic Research Service as a student trainee this summer. Studying economics in the classroom as well as working with a professor on economic research has made me want to pursue a career in economic consulting, and I am confident that I possess all the skills necessary to be a successful intern at the Economic Research Service. I am zealous and passionate about all my endeavors, and I am sure that my can-do attitude in addition to my experience with objective problem solving in both professional and academic settings make me an excellent candidate for this internship.
