Mission and Vision Statement Amedisys is a large home health and hospice health care organization that operates in 34 states (Amedisys, 2015). After becoming CEO in December 2014, Paul Kusserow aimed to shift Amedisys’ strategic direction (Amedisys, 2014). However, the organization’s mission and vision statements have remained unchanged and may not reflect this new direction. This essay will identify Amedisys’ strategic goals and suggest a more appropriate mission and vision statement based on these goals. Amedisys Goals According to Amedisys (2015), the organizations strategic goals include maximizing clinician efficiency by simplifying processes and procedures, improving patient care coordination through collaborative care technology, …show more content…
and improving chronic care management principles through evidence-based clinical protocols. Additionally, the organization is focusing on differentiating their services. In part, this will be achieved by improving the care for targeted, underserved patient populations. For example, leaders are seeking special accreditation for veteran-specific care and services (Amedisys, 2013). Finally, Amedisys is exploring strategic opportunities to expand their service offerings. For example, they are interested in adding private care services (Modern Healthcare, 2015). Diversifying would enable Amedisys to better meet their patients/ needs, minimize the need for future nursing home care, and help ensure sustainability. Mission Statement The mission statement clarifies the purpose and objectives of the organization. Amedisys’ current mission is, “To provide cost-efficient, quality health care services to the patients entrusted to our care” (Pitts & Washburn, 2014). Although this mission is still relevant, perhaps the statement could be improved to optimize its effectiveness. Importantly, providing quality health care services will not assist with differentiation. However, providing superior services will not only assist with differentiating the organization, it will help ensure sustainability. Importantly, the Affordable Care Act penalizes health systems with above average rehospitalizations. As a result, all health care organizations began to strive to provide quality care. In turn, quality services may not have a tremendous impact on decreasing rehospitalization rates, but superior services and new ways of providing care clearly will. In addition, the current mission neglects the significance of the most important stakeholder – the patient. Fortunately, Amedisys’ strategic goals indicate an increasing focus on patient-centered care. Therefore, perhaps a more appropriate mission statement would be, “To provide superior patient-centered care using appropriate and innovative evidence-based practices.” Vision Statement Vision statements also describe an organization's purpose. However, unlike mission statements, vision statements include organizational values. In turn, they are used to influence employee behavior and provide inspiration. Amedisys’ current vision is, “To be the premier health care at home company in the communities we serve” (Pitts & Washburn, 2014). Most notably, this vision statement does not mention any organizational values, so its influence would be limited.
Additionally, it excludes the entire hospice portion of the business. Home health has traditionally been Amedisys’ core competency, but other sectors will become increasingly important because they will assist with keeping patients in their home longer. Moreover, further diversification will require a more general vision. In turn, a more appropriate vision statement might be, “Drive growth by delivering a full range of holistic health care services, while cultivating a culture of compassion.” Conclusion Mission and vision statements communicate strategic goals. “To provide superior patient-centered care using appropriate and innovative evidence-based practices” is a mission better aligned with Amedisys new direction. Additionally, “Drive growth by delivering a full range of holistic health care services, while cultivating a culture of compassion” is a vision that could be used to inspire employees to achieve Amedisys’ purpose. Both, vision and mission statements provide purpose to organizations. Therefore, they should set the foundation for the strategic planning process. However, if and organizations strategic direction evolves, leaders should consider revising the organization’s mission and vision
statements.
The last three years have marked historical growth for MyEyeDr. the company continues to expand into new territory going from just three states and fifty offices to eleven states and over three hundred offices. Since my first day of work in the company, many things have changed or evolved into new initiatives. Among those evolutions, we will find the mission and vision statements, included. In MyEyeDr.’s Associate Handbook, the former mission statement was “to offer our patients uncompromising quality, value and convenience (2013).” These days, however, this mission statement has completely changed. Honor Health is a hospital and physician provider system located in phoenix Arizona. Honor health is relatively new hospital chain, more specifically it is the result of a merger of Scottsdale hospital and the John C. Lincoln Health Network (Alltucker, 2013). This designation of being viewed as one of the best constantly encourages and motivates Homeland to maintain this lofty reputation and to better the services and offerings they provide to support their standing. A nursing cares facilities reputation is of paramount importance in the nursing care industry. Homeland is clearly aware of this fact and constantly strives to advance its professional standing in the local and state nursing care market. While they fully value the reputation they’ve earned in the industry, they have not made strident attempts to effectively include and utilize analytic tools or methodologies in their business practices.
This addresses the environment in which nurses practices and strives for “an innovative environment where strong professional practice flourishes and where the mission, vision, and values come to life to achieve the outcomes believed to be important for the organization” (ANCC, 2008). This type of environment is accomplished by nurses working together towards a strategic plan outlined with facility policies and knowledge-based nursing and skills to achieve desired outcomes and accomplish organizational goals. I believe my facility does a great job with structural empowerment. Our nurse manager makes sure we know what our goals are as a unit. We review hospital satisfaction scores and infection rates to determine what practices need to be addressed for achieving organization and desired outcomes. We work to provide cost-effective care that exceeds national standards for excellence while working to strengthen bonds between staff members and making sure that at our facility “caring comes first”

The mission statement of an organization is a brief statement that explains the purpose that an organization exists. The organizational philosophy outlines the set of values and beliefs that controls the operations of an organization (Marquis, 2011). My current employer, Mayo Clinic, is a world renowned not-for-profit hospital that has been established for 150 years. Mayo Clinic is the first and biggest integrated not-for-profit medical group practice in the world and is a well-known brand name that is recognized world-wide. Working for an organization where the primary value is the needs of the patient come first, the organizations domain is held to a higher standard. The mission statement is to encourage hope and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to all patients through integrated clinical practice, education and research (Strategic statement of Mayo Clinic, 2012). The vision statement is that Mayo Clinic will offer an unparalleled experience as the most trusted partner for health care (Strategic statement of Mayo Clinic, 2012). In the medical field, innovations, research and technology motivate the business to perform and deliver care in a new standard. Mayo Clinic has a logo of three shields that are interlocked, presenting patient care, research and education.
The current mission, vision, and value statements are written very broadly to provide the five divisions within the company with an overall direction and strategy. Each division then interprets the strategy and goals to develop operational processes, procedures, tactics and plans to implement and achieve those goals.
Healthcare organizations are designed to meet the healthcare needs of individuals and promote a healthy community. The three healthcare organizations that interest me are: The Heart Hospital Baylor of Plano, Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery Plan, and Parkland Health and Hospital System.
