I am a junior at Princeton University where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a certificate in History and the Practice of Diplomacy. As someone with a knack for economic research and an interest in working for the federal government, I hope to have the opportunity to join the Economic Research Service as a student trainee this summer. Studying economics in the classroom as well as working with a professor on economic research has made me want to pursue a career in economic consulting, and I am confident that I possess all the skills necessary to be a successful intern at the Economic Research Service. I am zealous and passionate about all my endeavors, and I am sure that my can-do attitude in addition to my experience with objective problem solving in both professional and academic settings make me an excellent candidate for this internship. …show more content…
I did not take any economics classes before coming to Princeton, but in the two full years that I have been here, I developed a true passion for the discipline and have come to appreciate the value of economic analysis. During my internship this past summer at the Solidarity Center, I studied how certain economic policies, pressures, and trends affect labor markets and the lives of individual workers, and I am eager to move on to the more detailed, quantitative research and analysis that the Economic Research Service performs. I currently work as a research assistant in the Department of Economics here at Princeton where I assist Assistant Professor Nicholas Buchholz with his research on ride-sharing companies. I helped with cleaning a dataset consisting of millions of credit card transactions using Stata, extracting and manipulating census data on income distributions by country, as well as proofreading and editing Professor Buchholz’s working
Research My first research experience took place from the Fall 2012 – Summer 2013 in a neurobiology laboratory (Dr. Daniel Plas) focused on Parkinson’s Disease. In this project an undergrad student and I were tasked with optimizing a cellular medium for neural growth of the model organism Lymnaea stagnalis. This was comprised of following established protocols and altering certain variables within the formulas (differing concentrations of ions, pH, et al.) to observe growth pattern differences in vitro.
I was attracted to the Norlin Scholars community over any other opportunity at CU because I fit the Norlin Scholars program academically, socially, personally, and in terms of what I want for my future. None of the other programs I researched came as close as Norlin Scholars to matching my ideal vision for my time at CU.
For years now it’s been my dream to attend Melbourne High School. My two cousins have attended the school in the past five years and I’ve heard how enriching being part of the MHS community can be. They have both become excellent role models for me and now I wish to experience being part of the school’s tradition for myself.
I want to be a part of the SIMR program because this program is an opportunity for me to develop myself further as a student in the field of science. I am determined to attend the SIMR program because I have a love and curiosity for science. I am a willing student ready for a new type of challenge. This program will help me to learn more in depth about the topics I am already interested in, as well as give me the opportunity to use technologies that would be unavailable otherwise. Currently, I am deeply interested in the field of genetics.
When notified by a few peers that they had seen my name on a nomination list for the National Honor Society, I was surprised and genuinely flattered. After researching more about what it was, it was an honor to be recognized for all I do every day in order to be successful in life. Every year I make sure I take every opportunity to get the best education I can, like all honors or AP classes. My freshman year, I took AP Biology and have to admit I was initially intimidated, but I knew if I applied myself and kept on going through the course it would benefit me in the long run and I ended with a B and was ecstatic when I discovered that I passed the AP test. Passing one AP course gave me the ambition to go ahead and take more, so next year I plan on taking three AP classes; Psychology, Environmental Science and U.S. History. Along with these, I am very set on dual enrolling. I’m willing to work as hard as I can in order to ensure my success.
Honored, thrilled and uplifting are just understatements to what this means to me. To be chosen to be an applicant for the National Honors Society (NHS). I am sure that I am doing something right, for me to have the chance to be chosen to prove that I am worth being in NHS. This was a great opportunity, for me to better and further what one may think of me.

My love for business is not something I was born with. It took over a decade of experience and exploration to discover my passion. This discovery began ten years ago when I accepted a position at The Pitney Bowes Corporation. My job was to make unsolicited phone calls to prospective businesses in order to sell our base model postage meter. All that was required was reading a script, word for word, to potential buyers. Yet, after a week of working at Pitney Bowes, I still didn't know important details about the meter, like what it looked like, and how it actually operated. My manager acted a bit surprised when I asked to see the meter, but she agreed, and I took a walk to an adjacent building where I saw first hand what I was selling. It looked completely different from what I had expected, but by viewing and touching it first hand, my ability to convey to people what I was offering improved dramatically. Once I viewed the device, I felt more confident to adlib on the sales pitch. In a couple of weeks reading my hybrid pitch led to a higher rate of sales. People were more apt to buy from someone who sounded like a person and less like a robot. My sales steadily improved and in my third month I was the number one sales person out of over 200 employees. Management implemented some of my changes in the selling process and as a result, overall sales of the entry model postage meter increased significantly.
I believe the quantitative skills that I practiced and honed from my past experiences could bring me unique perspective for my graduate studies. At Princeton University’s Master in Finance program, I would like to further gain financial knowledge and skills, and ultimately prepare myself for the long-term challenge in my future career of financial analytics.
This interest in current affairs first motivated my enthusiasm for Economics. My first insight into this vast and fascinating subject was provided by school in which I studied basic economic theories. After finding that I was suddenly able to understand different ideas regularly brought up by the news and political debates I decided to explore the subject further. I did this through a combination of reading and listening to online lectures on the Kahn Academy website. Reading Freakonomics by Steven Levitt was a turning point for me as it opened up my eyes to the extent to which economic principles can be applied to so many different unlikely things from cheating sumo wrestlers to dealing drugs. I was particularly fascinated by how the author
After graduation from KOREA University, I decided to enter Hyndai MotorCompany(HMC), which is the largest Korean car manufacturer and global player, to pursue a career as an international businessman. In January 1991, I joined Domestic Finance Team of HMC. My specific assignment was to plan monthly and annual financial schedules for HMC's domestic funding needs. About two years later, in January of 1993, I was transferred to Retail Finance Team from Domestic Finance Team and responsible for financing by the sales and factoring of Car Receivables.
Ever since I was young I have always been interested in businesses and how they operate, as well as being fascinated by other languages and cultural differences. My passion for the subject expanded when I chose business studies and french, as part of my A-level education. Although these subjects are somewhat demanding, I find them extremely interesting. I believe that a degree combining both these aspects is the correct choice for me. I am confident that a course in international business studies and modern languages satisfies both these interests. I will be looking forward to learning about the international business world and I am relishing the thought of learning to integrate with other European countries. The idea of learning to communicate with other people across the world is something that has always appealed greatly to me.
Public Administration, as a field, had always captivated me right from my undergraduate days. I believe my curiosity for this field comes from my family. Both my father and my uncle were politicians. During my early days, I used to go to my father’s office where I had a great chance to observe different kinds of people with various jobs and interests. This was the first time I learned how mutual interests bring people together. When I understood how public relations work naturally, it forced me strongly to study and comprehend the complex theory of politics. After finishing high school, I made up my mind to pursue a career in Political Science. For this reason, I was enrolled to Istanbul Bilgi University’s Political Science program. After having completed my Bachelor’s Degree, I decided to excel in this field by completing a Master’s degree.

Additionally, the challenge that I came across as I encountered different mathematical and economics problems at my latter stages of life contributed greatly towards cementing my desires to further my education in both mathematics and economics at your prestigious institution.
