As a result of completing this activity, I have realized that doing this Chapter on an empty stomach has been extremely difficult. Besides that, I have learned that emphasis on word choice is very important in terms of appealing to other people. Many people believe that the restaurant foods are healthy, but they still make the food with oil and seasonings. On the passage, "We Don't Need Labels" the story says, "The words "Lite", "Low fat", and "Heart Smart" do attract buyers. Restaurants are free to group selections according to reasonable health standards. This would probably mean more to the average consumer than trying to sort through the difference between 1350 and 1375 calories." This statement helps me to understand that "healthy" words does not always mean that the
Through the process of acquiring knowledge in this course, I have learned countless aspects about my own self. Amidst the very challenges I faced, the act of communication, management, and leadership, are among them. Being bilingual, my communication skills are on par yet at times hinder me from articulating my intention precisely as I have meant them. With every socialization I have made, I have striven to do better and to be better. I have learned that although you may consider yourself “fluent” in a foreign language, there are phrases or intonations to which come across as something entirely different from what you intended to say causing the message to be lost between the barrier of the two communicators.
All in all, this book is a great read for those seeking to learn more about food and how it relates to all aspects of life and history as well as find that extra push in taking the initiative in improving one’s eating habits and lifestyle. There is no surprise that food is important in all aspects of our lives—it is shared amongst families, celebrated as a major part of our culture, and crucial to our daily routine that keeps us fit, healthy, and active. Today’s western culture glorifies a skewed perspective on how food is supposed to fit into our lives. Somehow this perception has led us to believe we no longer have the time or money it takes to prepare a wholesome, healthy meal that is shared at the dinner table with family. Instead, we are trained to want a meal that is fast, cheap, and easy. This meal is usually highly processed and filled with sugars and fats. This has led us to a problem of epidemic proportions characterized by the rapid increase in obesity and diabetes.
There once was a time where words like "light" and "low-fat" on food packages that had no nutritional meaning. As a result, shoppers were often led to believe they were buying products that were more helpful than they really were. Nutrition panels on labels were also confusing and hard to read. But the Australia New Zealand Authority (ANZFA) changed all that. In March 2001 the ANZFA defined new standardized terms that appear on food labels such as "low-fat", "reduced" and "lean" to control how food manufacturers could put their facts that are relevant to most of our dietary needs. This meaning that food labeling helps consumers to make the best possible food choice.
Making the choice of diet is critical because healthy food has low calories, which can help most people lose weight; nevertheless, processed food may let people have an unbalanced nutrition of intake. In Wikipedia, health food means it’s benefited for people to get nutrition and has strong bodies through a healthy diet, and processed food is produced in factories. In the Omnivore’s
One of the main benefits of menu labeling is giving consumer’s information directly to help them understand what exactly they are consuming. The average calorie intake for consumers is 1,800 to 2,000 per day. Even though consumers may not feel like they are eating too much, sometimes over half of the recommended calories will be consumed in just one meal. Menu labeling will allow consumers to track their calorie intake if restaurants will have the calories displayed on their menu. Most importantly, menu labeling focuses on the prevention of chronic diseases, which are typically related to obesity (Diets in Review). By providing nutritional information, restaurants could gain new customers. Since menu labeling is not being implemented in all restaurants, consumers are currently looking for establishments who provide nutritional
The story, In Praise of Fast Food, written by Rachel Laudan is an evaluation argument recommending healthy food choices in comparison to fast food. Laudan responds by sharing her experience with growing up on a farm and a child and eating food from her family garden. “Modern, fast, processed food is a disaster” (Faigley 302). In this writing selection, the author provided effective evidence to argue the inadequate safety of food today saying, “They built granaries, dried their meat and their fruit, salted and smoked their fish, curdled and fermented their dairy products, and cheerfully used additives and preservatives- sugar, salt, oil, vinegar, lye- to make audible foodstuffs” (Faigley 304). Food in the past was very different than what we have today.
I like food, really like food, the sight, taste, smell, the artistry of food, the texture of food and I like cooking as well. If food does not look or smell the way it should in my estimation, I will not eat it. Food has also been a comfort for me and a stress reliever; I have been an emotional eater for most of my adult life. Food has many different uses and connotations for different groups of people, for example in my family Sunday dinner and holidays are big and everybody is expected at the dinner table; usually friends are in the mix as well. These meals give us a chance to come together celebrate, bond, and be family; in short in my family food means love and welcoming. As a manager I've used food to bring
Today, more and more people pay attention to healthy lifestyle. People are not only concerned about whether you can eat, people are more concerned about whether you eat healthy. People attach so much importance in the diet of healthy, they understand the nutritional value of things is even more important. Only specific understanding of the nutritional value of food can only be a better choice for their own healthy living. But a lot of people for some very common nutritional value of foods often have a wrong understanding. I think that people in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle before, should pay attention to the nutritional value of different foods.
It is very important to understand that in everyday communication we are either the speaker or listener and it’s important that we do those jobs as best we can in order to have a healthy communication relationship. Interaction is a significant part of our daily lives. Oral communication with others is inevitable, and therefore it is crucial for us to acquire the skills to do so correctly. Aside from simply stating words or expressing ideas, oral communication serves various purposes. Oral communication allows an individual to express emotions, ideas, and feelings; it gives people the ability to empower, inspire, and motivate those who listen; and it allows people to share knowledge and traditions, as well as build their self-esteem. Oral communication is also useful in leading us to new discoveries, ideas, cultures, and perspectives (O’Neill). Thus, oral communication serves several different purposes in daily life; yet each of these purposes are connected to an even larger purpose. According to the textbook Communication: Making Connections, “Effective communication is critical to living successfully in today’s soc...
