The Psychology of Eating I like food, really like food, the sight, taste, smell, the artistry of food, the texture of food and I like cooking as well. If food does not look or smell the way it should in my estimation, I will not eat it. Food has also been a comfort for me and a stress reliever; I have been an emotional eater for most of my adult life. Food has many different uses and connotations for different groups of people, for example in my family Sunday dinner and holidays are big and everybody is expected at the dinner table; usually friends are in the mix as well. Food influences can be “grouped into five categories: cultural ideas, personal factors, resources, social factors and present contexts” (Jeffery Sobal & Carole A. Bisogni, 2009) Cultural influences set the frame work for behaviors shared by a group of people, these behaviors are a frame of reference to judge normal or right actions. Personal factors for eating include education and knowledge, lack of understanding of how to apply nutritional information does little in creating motivation to change eating habits. Resources can be a determinate in obtaining healthy food or organic food choices, low income groups often consume unhealthy food options and lack the means to shop for healthier food options like fresh fruit and vegetables. The social factors that affect eating are based on social class and social setting. The venue where food is consumed will dictate food choices and cost, in social settings food choices may be limited for people with dietary restrictions like vegetarians or food allergies. Food is a substance that derives from the environment in the form of plants, animals, or water. The primary function of food is to provide nourishment to an organism. A common saying goes, “we are what we eat;” but what exactly that makes us eat in the first place? What are the factors that influence our eating behaviors? If the food that we eat defines our personality and being as a whole, it should then be vital to identify the factors that push us to eat certain kinds of food. There is substantial evidence that supports the efficacy of individual and group CBT in treating binge eating disorder (“Part A,” 2006). The CBT approach for binge eating disorder is active and directive. At the cognitive level individuals in CBT are taught to identify, test, and correct their faulty cognitions. Behavioral strategies in CBT for binge eating include monitoring binge patterns, educating the individual, and introducing incompatible activities (Parrott, 1998). One study assessed the long-term efficacy of CBT in the treatment of binge eating disorder. They assessed a sample of 68 patients with binge eating disorder and a substantial reduction of binge eating was observed during treatment. There was a decline at the three-year follow-up and at the four, five, and six-year follow up there was a slight worsening of binge eating was observed in the individuals (Ricca, Mannucci, Zucchi, Rotella, & Faravelli, 2000). Other psychosocial therapies that show efficacy in the treatment for binge eating disorder are interpersonal therapy (IPT) and dialectical behavior therapy. There is evidence that both of these therapies are effective in the improvement of behavioral and psychological symptom (“Part A,” 2006).
One health-related topic that receives considerable attention concerns eating habits and the development of obesity. Biological, environmental, social, and psychological factors that influence eating are typically an aspect that is assessed with the discussion of obesity concerns in the United States (U.S.). Obesity is widespread and remains a prominent health issue in the U.S.. One of the ways overweight and obesity is defined entails the operation of the body mass index (BMI) of an individual. This study consists of how these factors have a direct correlation leading to obesity in many individuals nation-wide.

On-campus eating disorders are talked about everywhere and yet are not really talked about at all. There is observation, concern, and gossip, but hushed conversation and larger scale efforts to help and change never seem to earn public attention.
By definition disordered eating is irregular eating patterns that cannot be classified based on the set measure of other eating disorders (e.g. anorexia, bulimia, binge eating) (Leon, Fulkerson, Perry, Early-Zald, 1995). The most common types of disordered eating are bulimia, anorexia, and binge eating (Grossbard, Atkins, Geisner, & Larimer, 2013). Disordered eating is most prominent at universities. Research has concluded in the college age female population the number affected by disordered eating ranges from 34% to 67% (Corning, Krumm, & Smitham, 2006). It has also been found that men account for approximately 33% of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia (Griffiths, Murray, & Touyz, 2014). Eating disorders are not limited to one population or one group of people. Anyone can develop an eating disorder. There are numerous potential reasons as to why a person may develop an eating disorder. In our research we examine the different possibilities as to what causes an eating disorder and how it varies based on gender.

Unhealthy eating and the rise of obesity have become increasingly prevalent problems in the United States over the last few decades, but what often goes unnoticed is an epidemic that very well may be the cause of these issues; mindless eating. According to Weight Watchers, the term ‘mindless eating’ is defined as “eating food without paying adequate attention to what and how much is being eaten,” continuing to mention that this habit can be influenced by our surroundings and portion sizes. With the advancement of technology increasing the number of distractions, the idea that “bigger is better,” and American culture thriving in a life of convenience, snacking has become much more than a quick granola bar. Rather, it has transformed into consuming an entire bag of chips, for example, without even realizing it. Clearly, mindless eating is a significant contributor to health problems such as obesity, but what does this practice truly say about the culture in which we live? This unconscious habit may be impacting society to larger extent than many realize; hurting productivity, driving up health care costs, prolonging and even encouraging a fast paced lifestyle full of haphazard decision making.
We live in a society today that says that image is important. The messages that the movies, music videos, and magazines gives us about what beauty is suppose to look like can be very demanding. From the super thin models to the long weaves and big bootys. Society's view of beauty is especially hard for the women of today, we are constantly being told that beauty is being thin and never being told to be happy with who we are. The way we are suppose to look can cause a heavy burden on some people's lives thus causing some people to develop an eating disorder.
Whether it’s environment, education, or socioeconomic status, nutritional education is recommended for everyone. Frerichs et al. (2016) addresses the decrease of healthy foods in individual’s diets, and the increase of unhealthy food and recommends food literacy and education on nutrition. Nutrition education during childhood has the potential to shape perceptions and behaviors towards food, and contribute to the ways those children develop their eating habits (p. 1). When comparing myself to the average American, I would say that my eating habits fall directly in the middle of the spectrum. I’m not a health food nut who obsessively counts calories, but I’m certainly not the person that eats pizza for all three meals. I have a ton of room for improvement, but I also have a long way to fall, if I let myself go completely. On most days, I seem to eat whatever’s around me, based on flavor and convenience. I eat most of my meals in Tower Dining, my dorm’s dining hall, and there are always several options during mealtimes: some of them healthy, some of them… less so. Previously to taking this class, I had never given much thought to my eating habits. I always thought of the way I chose to eat as one of those things I didn’t need to concern myself with too heavily now because I’m a young broke college student. The way I eat is pretty similar to the way most of my friends eat and when you live away from home, that seems like the norm for people in college. However, after applying what I’ve learned in this class to my life, I’ve realized that the dietary choices I make now affect not only my current health, but my future health as well. So overall, I would say that my eating habits are pretty bad, but I’m working on making them better.
