The Application of Social Psychological Theories and Concepts to Eating habits A common saying goes, “we are what we eat;” but what exactly that makes us eat in the first place? What are the factors that influence our eating behaviors? If the food that we eat defines our personality and being as a whole, it should then be vital to identify the factors that push us to eat certain kinds of food. I think that social psychology has the answer. As broad as this field may seem, yet this science of explaining human behavior takes it reference on the influence of the environment, people, the media, and almost about anything that can contribute to how people think, feel, and act. Foods are even labeled as feminine or masculine. In the article of Wiseman (2010) for The Guardian, she mentions how Yorkie bars are for boys while Flakes are for girls. She also mentioned how gender dipping on foods can also be evident through the cupcake revolution, it is a concept described through the representation of the cupcake as completly feminine while the Pot Noodle Doner Kebab is today's totem of manliness (Wiseman). Just as the women and men physique differ from each other, so does the concept of food eating. We have historically witnesses how society has come to accept the concepts that women who are as thin as paper have the ideal body. This, in the larger context, affects eating behaviors. To some, it led to people eating less especially women. Others, however, take them negatively and instead binge into eating. As years passed, we now realize that this concept have evolved into the consideration that thin is out but fit is right. Such concept today shape beliefs in eating and so regulate behaviors that would have to promote healthy eating
