Bad Nutritional Habits Nutrition is an important part of our daily lives because of the numerous effects it has on our health and fitness. There are many different influences that can affect a person’s nutritional habits. The type of environment and the way people are raised often affect the way they diet and whether that diet is healthy or unhealthy. Because a person cannot always choose how and where he or she is raised, education concerning nutrition and healthy diets should be taught to all ages and social classes. Lack of nutritional education and obesity rates are positively correlated in the United States. This lack of education as well as poor nutritional habits have played a major role in the increased amount of obese individuals in the United States, and throughout the world. The diet of the average person in the United States can be seen as less than ideal to anyone who has knowledge of nutrition and proper diet. According to Center For Science In the Public Interest (CSPINET), the diet of the an average individual in America is said to lead to increase the risk of many diseases. This is due to the amount of saturated fat, sodium, calories, and added sugar (para. 1). In 2016, Frerichs, Intolubbe-Chmil, Trowbridge, Brittin, Teitelbaum, & Huang, explain that the factors of …show more content…
Whether it’s environment, education, or socioeconomic status, nutritional education is recommended for everyone. Frerichs et al. (2016) addresses the decrease of healthy foods in individual’s diets, and the increase of unhealthy food and recommends food literacy and education on nutrition. Nutrition education during childhood has the potential to shape perceptions and behaviors towards food, and contribute to the ways those children develop their eating habits (p. 1). The education about nutrition is important for the future generations, and will hopefully decrease the rate of obesity and bad nutritional habits in the
The population in the United States as of 2009 was 307,006,550 the younger population is projected to slightly increase and eventually plateau though the older population has been steadily increasing and projected to continue on an upward trend (Vincent & Velkoff, 2010). The lack of a healthier diet is something that has been highlighted in the media for the past decade and more often than not we are seeing the effects of overindulging and the consumption of highl...
Nutrition and health have become more popular in today 's society. Our generation is becoming more and more indebted to the idea of being healthy and eating nutritious meals. However, in “The American Paradox,” by Michael Pollan he argues that our unhealthy population is preoccupied with nutrition and the idea of eating healthy than their actual health. He also mentions the food industry, nutrition science and how culture affects the way we eat and make food choices. While Pollan is right about all these factor that affect our eating habits, there is more to it than that. Convenience, affordability and social influence also affects our food choices making them inadequate.
Obesity is a rising problem in the United States. With obesity rates on the rise something must be done to prevent this massive issue. There are ways to help including educating at young ages, improving nutrition facts at restaurants, and providing more space for citizens to get physically active.
According to the USDA, at the start of century 21st American people have increased their daily caloric intake by consuming five hundred calories more than in 1970. As cited by Whitney & Rolfes (2011), there are many recognized causes of obesity such as genetics, environment, culture, socioeconomic, and metabolism among others; but the cause most evident is that food intake is higher than the calories burned in physical activity. Excess of energy from food is stored in the body as fat causing an increase of weight. During the course of the last 40 years, obesity has grown enormously in the United States and the rates remain on the rise (pgs. 272-273).
It is estimated that about forty-three million children under the age of ten are obese and that was found in urban areas. One of the main reasons obesity develops is due to the fact that the child, adolescent or adult has an unhealthy diet. Good nutrition plays a huge part in everyone’s life; no matter if you’re a male or female good nutrition is always important. Keeping us healthy, nutrition reduces the risks of developing diseases such as chronic disease, stroke and also cancer. Good nutrition is also important because studies have shown that it is good for mental health including depression which is also linked to obesity. A proper diet consists of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, fiber foods and limiting fats or sugars. Eating fruits and vegetables is important when developing into an adolescent or an adult because vegetables are rich in vitamins A and C, also fibers and potassium which are excellent for the human body (Fuentes, Schellekens, Dinan, & Cryan, 2015, p. 52). Vitamins and fibers help the human body by shaping our bones, helping immune systems, and healing certain
Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.
Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.
Since 1970, the obesity rates in America have more than doubled. Currently two-thirds of (roughly 150 million) adults in the United States are either overweight, or obese (Food Research and Action Center). According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, “overweight is defined as a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 whereas obesity is defined as a BMI greater than 30.” There are numerous factors that contribute to obesity such as: biological, behavioral and cultural influences (Food Research and Action Center). While these factors all have a large role in obesity, there is no factor with as great of an influence as poverty.
By 2012, United States ranked first in obesity rate among all developed countries(The World Post). According to Gallup research, the graph of obesity rate tells us that "The adult obesity rate so far in 2013 is 27.2%, up from 26.2%"(Sharpe). Obesity is just one little sector of health issues caused by food production. Like obesity, many health issues are rising and increasing their victims from what we eat. How the food we eat makes us ill? To solve the health issues, we must look carefully at the ingredients and other sources that are included in the food we eat because they might be the causes of health issues.
Nutrients are important to have in the human body. The food that we consume will either promote healthy body development or unhealthy body development. Therefore, as self-loving people we pay attention to the foods we put in our bodies. In fact, there is a saying “you are what you eat”, including the point that too much of anything is bad for you. However, not all Americans look at the foods they ingest in their bodies. It is easy for humans to be tempted to eat unhealthy foods or even worse lack self-control of how much they devour to satisfy their hunger. Therefore, individuals need a source of guidance on what foods to put in their bodies and how much they consume
Through various observations and assumptions, there have been conversations on whether or not overconsumption of food is an addiction. However, many have come to the conclusion that food is an addiction if it is overconsume excessively than it is necessary for an individual’s diet. Nevertheless, food addiction can create health issues that can affect an individual’s body. Even though, many individual may have such knowledge of overconsumption of food; however, many may choose to ignore the consequences that comes with food addiction. Becoming a food addict is harmful and dangerous to an individual’s health.
Health, nutrition and fitness are the three interrelated areas that determine an individual's sense of happiness and well being.
Unhealthy Behavior is not in a state of good or normal health, in an unsound, weak, or unhealthy condition. Being a healthy person does not mean only being healthy in diet and being physically healthy. Mentally healthy is also part of being a healthy person. Unhealthy Behavior may not affect you physically however, there is always chance of affecting mentally. One of my Unhealthy Behavior is no doctor’s checkup. People is always asking: “Why is important to have a balanced diet? Why is necessary to have a balanced diet on a daily basis? And why do professionals tend to recommend a balanced diet?” The human being has essential needs to its existence: breathing, feeding, and keeping the body in constant movement. The majority of the people are aware of this, but they do not have a balance among these things and even more important they do not eat the adequate food to keep their body healthy. Food is one of the most important factors because it gives the energy the body needs daily. In other words, few words food is the fuel that provides glucose, which is carried to each cell of the body through the bloodstream. This process is extremely important and this is influenced by the type of food that each person consumes. A balanced diet is important for human beings, and makes reference to a good nutrition with regard to the food they eat; which contains macro nutrients that are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins; these provide energy and basic materials that the body uses to grow and stay healthy.
Previously to taking this class, I had never given much thought to my eating habits. I always thought of the way I chose to eat as one of those things I didn’t need to concern myself with too heavily now because I’m a young broke college student. The way I eat is pretty similar to the way most of my friends eat and when you live away from home, that seems like the norm for people in college. However, after applying what I’ve learned in this class to my life, I’ve realized that the dietary choices I make now affect not only my current health, but my future health as well. So overall, I would say that my eating habits are pretty bad, but I’m working on making them better.
