Abstract
The purpose of this literature review is to examine the prevalence of depression as it related to the marital status of men. To be more specific it will be focusing on men who are no longer married by way of divorce or widowing. The lyrics above were written and sang by the late and legendary jazz singer Joe Williams. This song, although it is over ten years old, still captivates the messages that society often sends the male population today. A man isn't supposed to cry. Showing emotion is portrayed a sign of weakness. Whatever internal conflict that may arise within him, he must deal with on his own. It is suggested that he must be the head of his household, and often carry the weight of the world on his shoulders without breaking.
From a psychological point of view, reaching out for help is the last things, especially those to whom power is important, do. One of the most common social support systems is marriage. On another note, it is known that a healthy marriage can produce better health experiences for both individuals who take part in it. Not only will they have better health experiences, but married individuals also tend to have healthier outcomes. The most common psychological disorder associated with suicide would be depression. Depression is amongst one of the most frequently diagnosed mental disorders with in the United States. This treatable mental condition tends to make a person feel discouraged, unmotivated, hopeless, helpless, or disinterested in life in general. According to the DSM-IV, these feelings turn into depression when they last for long periods of time and begin to interfere with daily activities that were once enjoyable to the person such as going to work, going to school, or spending time with loved.
