Major Depressive Disorder or MDD is a very common clinical condition that affects millions of people every year. According to the Agency for Health Care Policy & Research, “ depression is under diagnosed & untreated by most medical doctors, despite the fact that it can almost always be treated successfully. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV); A person who suffers from this disorder must have a depressed mood, or have lost interest in things that would have normally brought them pleasure; for a minimum of two weeks. This must be different then the person’s normal behaviors, and it may not be caused by a general medical condition. (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) Depression is an illness within itself that affects the “whole body”. (Staywell,1998) The body, feelings, thoughts, and behavior are all immensely altered when someone is depressed. It is not a sign of personal weakness, or a condition that can be wished or willed away. For some people depression is just temporary, but for others it can last for weeks, months and even years. The exact causes of depression seem to differ immensely, but there are some who believe that it maybe caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, or that it may even be hereditary. Still there are others who believe that it is a combination of social, biological, emotional, psychological, and economical influences that may cause someone who has no family history of depression to develop even a mild case of depression. “Women are two times more likely to develop depressive symptoms then men”(Psychosocial and Behavioral Factors in Women’s Health, 1990), and women who are among the child-bearing years tend to be more at risk. However this is not to say that men are not affected by depression. It is usually, because of negative social influences, such as economic instability, and/or the inability to handle stress in their lives. Regardless of the person whether male or female who has developed the symptoms of depression, their lives have been invaded by a sickness that can have a devastating effect on their lives; depending on how severe their symptoms are. If left untreated the end result could have an even more devastating effect. Luckily, there are treatments available that are successful. Once again, during the same time when Angelou had just received the job of working on the street cars, she again spoke with her mother. Her mother stated, “Life is going to give you just what you put into it. Put your whole heart in everything you do, and pray, then you can wait.” (264) This showed that hope was still possible though in storms by approaching life in a positive manner. This quote explained that all behaviors towards life were optional; however the one who gave positivity received positivity, and the one who gave negativity also received negativity. That all set up the explanation that in storms, the key thing to do is to approach it affirmatively, bringing out the hope. (EXPAND) In conclusion, optimism found in the middle of conflict was shown through the advice of Angelou’s
Persuasion is the business creating thoughts, actions or feelings about something to achieve a particular outcome. (G.Magee, 2014) There are many types of persuasion, and many means of persuading others. Choosing the appropriate method of persuasion can have a large impact on the effectiveness of persuasion.
The Mehtases don’t care much about Koly because when she was finishing getting ready for the wedding, she heard a sitar, and a tabla (Whelan 16). Hearing the instruments being played at her wedding this helped her feel wanted. Later Koly finds out the band playing the sitar, and the tabla was just to impress the Mehtases friends. The Mehtases also show they don’t really care for Koly because when Hari was left unattended so Mrs. Mehta went to get him medicine in the nearest town, Koly was not allowed to see Hari her husband, (Whelan 23). The Mehtases don’t care for Koly because she can’t see her husband, especially the day after they are married. Furthermore, the Mehtases also lack appreciation towards Koly after she helps her husband with his cough using honey and some ginger which helped him feel better and stop coughing. Mrs. Mehtas scolds Koly for helping her son afterwards. In conclusion, the Mehtases show lack of appreciation towards Koly because they don’t do much for
As expressed in the previous chapter, there is no clear and concise definition as to what exactly is and is not persuasion. Therefore, persuasion has several names and meanings making it difficult to define this complex topic. In this chapter, the author examines some of the reasons as to why defining this phenomenon is such a hassle. To do this, the author first describes two important factors that clarify the source of differences among definitions of persuasion, which are the ideas of pure versus borderline persuasion. Following these characteristics, the author presents five other controversial factors that also contribute to the differences among definitions of persuasion.
Depression is much more common than most people think. Because it is essentially an invisible illness and is largely in the mind, it is difficult to correctly diagnose it and most people suffer for months, years, or even decades with depression. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines depression as “a mood disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty with thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal thoughts or an attempt to commit suicide.” Most medical definitions are able to explain what happens and why it does, but after carefully examining this one, we only notice that it explains what happens, but not why. Usually, the symptoms of an illness are...
Once the officers arrive on scene and talk to the homeowner or business owners they must now for their and the citizens safety get the scene secured in a timely manner. Generally, it is not necessary to go to far lengths to secure a burglary scene because most times the burglar is already gone away from the scene of the crime but they still need to secure the scene just to be safe. They first need to ask the victim to avoid touching anything inside of their home or business, and try to keep them in an undisturbed portion of the scene such as the garage or in the kitchen where its likely the offender did not go through. Traffic through the building should be minimized. This is very important so that when the crime scene team arrives on scene they are able to dust for prints and look for clues that will help them head in the right direction to catch the assailant. In some cases the victims may have already been through their
Strong evidence suggests that clinical depression runs in families. Still, just because a person has family members with clinical depression does not guarantee that he or she will develop it. Similarly, you may get it even if no one else in your family has had it. People with high levels of stress are much more likely to develop depression that those who do not. Though most people go through a "down" period after a particularly stressful event like a divorce or death of a loved one, sometimes extremely difficult stresses can trigger depressive episodes in certain people who are susceptible to the illness.
Depression is a disease that steals emotion, it stops the patient from being able to experience emotional feelings and affects the thoughts, body, and mind of those suffering from it. Women are three times more likely to experience depression than men, however, it is a disease that can affect everyone in a different way. That is why treatment for depression is most difficult; something that works for one may not work for another. Psychotherapy and antidepressants are both forms of treatment, each having their own advantages and disadvantages.
“The struggle you're in today is developing the strength for tomorrow”- Unknown. This quote means the struggles an individual has had one day, should not be causing any trouble the next day because the bad energy from yesterday is going to develope into the good energy. The dictionary definition of perseverance is a “steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.” Dictionary.com. Depression is well known for its mental or emotional symptoms. Symptoms for depression include: persistently sad or unhappy mood, loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyable activities, difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions, anxiety, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness, and thoughts of death or dying. “People who have endured a major depressive episode describe the experience as a descent into t...
Many people are very curious about their past lives and expend great time, effort and money to explore them. Actually, this curious probing into past lives is unnecessary. Indeed it is a natural protection from reliving past trauma or becoming infatuated more with our past lives that our present life that the inner recesses of the muladhara memory chakra are not easily accessed. For, as we exist now is a sum total of all our past lives. In our present moment, our mind and body state is the cumulative result of the entire spectrum of our past lives. So, no matter how great the intellectual knowing of these two key principles, it is how we currently live that positively shapes karma and unfolds us spiritually. Knowing the laws, we are responsible to resolve blossoming karmas from past lives and create karma that, projected into the future, will advance, not hinder, us.
Persuasion is at the heart of sales, marketing, branding and business in general. You are persuading people throughout the entire buyer’s journey to your brand, store, products, and more. The Japanese Americans, Melba Patillo Beals, and Alice all had different challenges they had to face but they all used perseverance to get through them. They all showed different ways to preserver, whether it was standing up for themselves, speaking out, changing for others, or finding a different way to accomplish something. To persevere is not an easy task to do, sometimes people stand up for what they believe in even though they are the only ones. Melba did this when she stood up in front of her principal. She knew that he did not believe that they deserved protection. Perseverance is also finding new ways to accomplish new things like the Japanese Americans had to do, to change their whole lifestyle. When people use perseverance it helps them achieve goals they did not think possible. Authors use nonfiction literature to influence their readers by showing them how it can help people accomplish new
Persuasion is used in many everyday things these being mostly advertisements. Persuasion is made up of many different parts. These different parts always try to dig deep into our DNA to find what we really want. The people of the world know what we want. So trying to persuade someone is practically talking to yourself. When people advertise to other humans all they have to do is ask themselves, “What do I like about this product?” Instantly they will have it running on the radio, T.V., and many other media devices. Persuasion is always best heard rather than read. A person trying to persuade us is much harder than, us trying to persuade ourselves. A great point in history was riddled with persuasion. Martin Luther King Jr’s speech was full of persuasive remarks about the present day civil rights movement. In his speech he used three rhetorical devices to get his points across, the devices he used were repetition, allusion, and restatement.
As magical beings we are able to develop psychic abilities and intuition and are able to delve deeper into parts of our brain and souls that others are not able to do. Past lives can help us in how we handle situations. But you have to have the right level of detachment to not let past lives negatively influence your current life.
