Hope is an attribute in life that many people cling to. It gives people courage and reasons to continue striving in everyday life, especially in the toughest of times. The autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou, published in 1969, followed Angelou’s childhood growing up in the South as a minority, the problems that she faced because of that, how she overcame those problems, and how she still found hope. The theme represented in this autobiography is that in every storm faced in life it may feel like there’s nothing left; however, there will always be hope that can still be found. To begin, Angelou’s early discovery of life showed attainable hope though in storms. At age fifteen, Angelou was set on getting a job on the street cars. No colored person had ever yet done so, but that did not stop her determination. Though she faced great struggles during the process, joy was later received when she finally got the job. Once again, during the same time when Angelou had just received the job of working on the street cars, she again spoke with her mother. Her mother stated, “Life is going to give you just what you put into it. Put your whole heart in everything you do, and pray, then you can wait.” (264) This showed that hope was still possible though in storms by approaching life in a positive manner. This quote explained that all behaviors towards life were optional; however the one who gave positivity received positivity, and the one who gave negativity also received negativity. That all set up the explanation that in storms, the key thing to do is to approach it affirmatively, bringing out the hope.
