Everybody always hear about girls and the struggles of fitting in and meeting society’s standards, but we never hear about how stereotypes affect men. In today’s society stereotypes set standards for physical and emotional traits for both men and women. People feel that they need to be accepted by their peers. They have to be this perfect image that we have created in our minds. For men to fit in you have to be a “man” and have all the characteristics that come with it. Men like women fear the criticism from both peers and society. Men have just as hard of a time living up to their stereotype as women do.

When someone is thinking of a man, what do they think? Strong? Brave? That’s what most people think; in reality that is a very false image. In “Bros Before Hos: The Guy Code,” Michael Kimmel, talks about what it means to be a man and what it takes to be a man in today’s world. Men are pressured into what they “should” be. If they don’t follow certain unwritten rules, which include: not asking for directions, not giving up, not showing fear, or any signs of emotional weakness, such as tears; they are considered less than a man, a wimp. A real man must be aggressive and brave, he must defend his territory: status, family, possessions. Men blindly follow the Guy Code, they believe in order to fit in, they must comply and be part of the pack.
Unfortunately it seems to be a subject that doesn’t get much attention. It is almost as if it is swept under the rug in our society. The idea of gender as we think of it, is solely a social construct, born into existence by the pressure of tradition and the supremacy of the majority. Frida Kahlo was a talented artist whose pride and self-determination has inspired feminists and many others. She was in a turbulent relationship with her husband Diego Rivera, but she claimed her independence from him. This is called gender roles; societies expecting you to act like a male or female (Rathus, 2010). Some people say, “act like a lady,” or “be a man,” these are examples of how gender roles work in our everyday lives. In society when we think stereotypes, what do we think? Many think of jocks, nerds, or popular kids; gender stereotyping is very similar. Gender stereotypes are thoughts of what the gender is supposed to behave like (Rathus, 2010). Most common stereotypes of men are that men are aggressive and violent. Most western countries portray men as emotionally stable, assertive, independent and strong. These stereotypes are not true in most cases. It is said that men are emotionally more stable than women because they don't cry. I completely disagree with this. Sometimes crying can be beneficial too and is a sign of emotional strength. Men crying publically has become socially unacceptable. If a man is very emotional, it is seen as a sign of weakness.
