Recommended: THE impacts of social media in teenager's lives

Time is the most valuable aspect of a teenager’s life. The vast potential found in one’s youth can be fulfilled or not depending on how they use their time. Therefore, that in which parents allow their children to employ themselves in is crucial to their development. Social media is one of the most significant devices of influence in today’s society. Just how prevalent is social media use? 73% of teens are on or involved in social media. 60% of adults think parents should have full control over everything a child does online. The significance of these statistics is increasing because of how supremely influential social media is. Until recently, parental supervision has been the understood method of monitors children’s social media activity. However, the effectiveness of parental supervision is being questioned, and in some cases challenged by schools through the institution of new “educational monitoring systems” supposedly designed to ensure safety while sustaining the privacy of students. Since authority for the educating of children is given to schools by their parents, the authority of monitoring kids’ social media activity should find its genesis in the home as well. There is no doubt that social media has the potential to, and in some cases already has created opportunities for negative influence to be widely spread. Lack of self-control and filtration of thoughts/emotions often found in social media activity sets the stage for danger with life-destroying capabilities. People, especially youth, do not understand that impact their actions can have on not only themselves, but others as well. The consequences of the decisions that they make are also not understood. Improvements in the quality of life (particularly social) within the home and the educational system will follow the institution of these ideas. This debate in the eyes of many has become about more than who should monitor the online activity of children. It is about where true authority lies, whether in the state or in the home. This is a significant advancement on principles. Parental influence in a child’s life is irreplaceable. This influence ought not to be challenged through the irresistible monitoring of students by sources outside of the home without permission. A society is only as strong as the homes that make it up. Will this truth be thwarted and cause society’s future generations suffer? This is dependent upon how well children are taught today, to live in the real world tomorrow.

Danah Boyd is encouraging parents to lay back on their tracking and monitoring and to let their children do what they want online and they will tell you what is going on. She also said instead of being a “helicopter parent” by monitoring what your child sees and does online, communicate with your child and teach them what to do when there is an online predator and “developing strategies for negotiating public life, and the potential risks of interacting with others”. I fully agree with what Boyd is stating in this article and think that kids need their own kind of freedom without parents acting like hawks and watching their every move online.
