In Australia, Indigenous people are more likely to experience marginalization and are persistently marginalized over a 10-year period. In a UN report it was stated that “In many parts of the world Indigenous peoples suffer from a history of discrimination and exclusion that has left them on the margins of the larger societies in which they exist.” This marginalization can span from the use of derogatory language, to denying a professional opportunity based on race or colour, to overlooking, or criticizing other spiritual or religious beliefs. Australian indigenous people who are treated with this kind of disrespect can experience anxiety, depression, self-doubt, stress and paranoia from their marginalization. An example of someone in our society speaking out and creating awareness is Senator the Hon. Concetta Fieravanti-Wells in her 2014 Harmony Day message in which she shares the origins of her family in Australia and how she, and her family learnt what belonging to a culturally diverse community is all about. Harmony day aims to help “encourage our young Australians to stand together in unity” as well as providing excellent opportunities to celebrate all the different cultures that make up the greater Barker Community. Our event that we are holding is designed to inform people about the cultures from all around the world, in this case specifically, food. We feel as a group that these cooking classes will give people an insight of how people cook from around the world, the ingredients made available that makes each region so unique and have the opportunity to taste some of the food that they made
