Marcus Tullius Cicero

Marcus Tullius Cicero, also known as Tully is known as one of Rome’s greatest orators (Bingley). Being the innovator of the Ciceronian Rhetoric, along with many other accomplishments, Cicero had a successful life although it was cut short. In his younger years, Cicero served in the military, studied law, literacy, and philosophy (Bingley). He eventually married and later became a part of the senate , but he was exiled. He soon returned to Rome where he primarily worked on his studies and his writings until the death of the great Roman ruler, Julius Caesar.

Born in 106 BCE on January third in a small town southeast of Rome called Arpinum. It is said that Cicero was born into a well-respected, land owning family of the town (MARCUS TULLIUS CICERO – BIOGRAPHY). At a young age Cicero showed an interest in philosophy and poetry, his talent in these areas provided him the opportunity to study in Rome. His studies were briefly interrupted in the year of 90 BCE to serve in the military; he was only sixteen (Bingley). After the war he returned to his studies and soon became a lawyer. Marcus Tullius Cicero studied alongside Titus Pomponius, later known as Atticus who, became a “second brother” to him (MARCUS TULLIUS CICERO – BIOGRAPHY). Also according the article “MARCUSS TULLIUS CICERO – BIOGRAPHY”, they went to Rome together where they were introduced to Epicurean philosophy. While in Rome, Cicero was assigned his first major case in 80 BCE. Cicero had accused some supporters of Sulla causing controversy on the case, though in the end he was victorious (MARCUS TULLIUS CICERO – BIOGRAPHY).

He immediately tried to use Octavian to declare war against Mark Antony, follower of Caesar, though he and Octavian united making Cicero the enemy. On December 7, 43 BCE, Marcus Tullius Cicero was hunted down and executed. Cicero’s throat was slit and his head and hands were severed off and hung as warning. According to “MARCUS TULLIUS CICERO – BIOGRAPHY,” Cicero said to his murders “There is nothing proper about what you are doing solider, but do try to kill me properly.” Marcus Tullius Cicero was a man of philosophy and a man for justice, his works, whether they orations, letters, poetry, or even translations. Cicero was a man of talent, all of which he took advantage of. Marcus Tullius Cicero is a man remembered.
