Is the increasing pressure in today’s school systems creating a generation of future successful adults in the work force or are we faced with countless amounts of shortcomings including dropouts, drug dependent adults, and psychologically affected students? Although many students escape high school and college unharmed by the potentially enormous pressure placed on them to meet certain standards, there are many that fall victim to the idealistic expectations. Outstanding pressure has been the gateway to the development of drug dependency and in some cases, addiction in many students, as well as mental and psychological disorders, and academically dishonest behaviors.
Although minimal issues can be caused by the students themselves, a great deal of the problems faced come from external sources, such as parents, teachers, and peers. However, the biggest stressor in the lives of high school students has been clearly identified due to the negative results being displayed through their students has sparked educators’ recognition. Although 15% of teachers said their students had more confidence, and 28% said their students were more prepared for learning, an overwhelming 61% said their students felt more anxiety and 24% of teachers said their students overall self confidence had taken a turn for the worse (Jones). Despite the minimal amount of educators that felt the stress had resulted in positive results, the teachers’ claims about the negative effects on their students prove that the increasing standards and the effects that come with them are undoubtedly apparent.

The “push to be perfect” (Thomas) is at an all-time high. Pressure for perfection from peers, parents, teachers and coaches is so unreasonably high that many students don’t think that they will ever be able to achieve it. A student feels that it is impossible to get good grades, be athletic, in multiple organizations, and most of all appear to be happy. Students have turned to cheating, drug/ alcohol abuse, and even suicide to try and cope. They are competing with friends for top spots, and believe that if they don’t beat them, they are a failure. Studies have shown that many college students are not able to handle the stress while in school, which hinders the ability for the brain to act in a normal way (Shahrokh and Hales, 2003). If a person is unable to deal with the stress that one is being faced with, it will have negative consequences in terms of causing several psychological disorders (Canby et al., 2014). Entering post-secondary education is a completely new environment for students, as it can be tough for many to adjust to the new surroundings. There are many factors that cause stress when students enter college, as it can include having the ability to deal with lower marks (Struthers et al., 2000) and having to create a new social life. Once and if a social life is established, it can cause more stress among students because it can lead into peer pressure that results in risky behavior. However, in recent years, burnouts have been noticed outside of work: marriages, athletes, but in particular, students. When being examined, students were ranked middle to upper level of the burnout scale compared to educators, counselors, nurses and, emergency medical service (EMS) responders. This has indicated that students are experiencing burnouts during their learning process. Student burnout can lead to a high number of absences, less motivation to do work that is required, or even drops out of school. This is evident that student burnout has a negative impact on academic learning. There are several reasons on the importance of student burnout: student burnout may be the underlying key to understanding student behaviors during their studies, student burnout may also influence their relationships, and the frequency of student burnout may affect the general reputation of the institution for new students. Student academic burnout has been explored in the relation of three factors. Those factors are as listed: a low sense of achievement; the decline feeling of proficiency and the want to be able to succeed, depersonalization; the unsettling feelings of detachment, and emotional exhaustion; the feeling of your inner resources being drained. As a college student that has experienced academic burnout, I can say that the three factors; a low sense of achievement, depersonalization, and emotional exhaustion are all true. The feeling of academic burnout is tiring. It makes you feel as if you are weak, and all you want to do is sleep. Academic pressure had been increasing significantly in the past few years. In schools today, academic pressure put on teens is excessive, unnecessary, and can be extremely harmful.
Are the new standards and expectations the world has for teenagers really creating monsters? The amount of stress that is put on students these days between trying to balance school, homework, extra curricular activities, social lives, sleep and a healthy lifestyle is being considered as a health epidemic (Palmer, 2005). Students are obsessing over getting the grades that are expected of them to please those that push them, and in return, lose sleep and give up other aspects of their lives that are important to them such as time with friends and family as well as activities that they enjoy. The stress that they endure from the pressures of parents, teachers, colleges, and peers have many physical as well as mental effects on every student, some more harmful than others. The extreme pressure on students to get perfect grades so that they will be accepted into a college has diminished the concept of actually learning and has left the art of “finagling the system” in order to succeed in its place (Palmer, 2005). There are many ways that should be implemented in order to reduce the stress on students so that they can thrive because, withoutthem, the school systems will only be creating generations of stressed out, materialistic, and miseducated students (Palmer, 2005).
Academic stress can take complete control over the student enduring it. Researchers say that the most common form of anxiety causing academic stress is achievement anxiety. This type of anxiety is likely to occur when a student has a fear of failure in an academic related situation.
