INTRODUCTION
Mahindra & Mahindra Limited (M&M) is an Indian multinational manufacturing corporation with headquarters in Mumbai. It is one of the largest vehicle manufacturers by production in India and the largest seller of tractors across the world.
After 1994, the company reinvented the strategies for boosting the sales of its existing products. When those strategies exhausted, the company conceptualized the birth of a new market leader through “Project Scorpio” to enter into the Utility Vehicle (UV) market. It started IDAM: Integrated Design and Manufacturing, with a multifunctional project team. It conducted a consumer research drive: “static and drive” clinic to get consumer insights about the perception about the company and its products.

WEAKNESSES
1. Limited International Presence: Although Mahindra still continues to be number 1 SUV in India, the market share outside India still continues to be low.
2. Rising Manufacturing costs: Rising inflation, wages, higher interest rates for capital rising was leading to rise in the manufacturing costs.
THREATS
1. Intense competition: There is stiff competition from SUV’s of global automobile giants with superior technological advantage like Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, Toyota Qualis, Toyota Innova, Ford Ecosport etc.
2. Automatic Transmission only on Top-End Variant: Not all variants of Scorpio have automatic transmission which gives an Opportunity to competitors to take advantage of.
3. Government Regulations, Taxes and increasing fuel prices: Higher excise duty of 30% introduced in 2013 budget led to drop in sales of SUV car’s segment. Action Modular will be highly marketable and can yield more in revenue versus decreasing the revenue by utilizing outside carrier.
SUVs are everywhere. They are in the cities, in the suburbs, small towns and in the country. Companies are making more models and they are getting even bigger in size. The American market is screaming for more production of these vehicles. Frankly, America loves its SUVs.
Since the early 1990s, the car market has become saturated with sport utility vehicles. While SUV’s have been enthusiastically received by a wide spectrum of the demographic – everyone from teenagers to soccer moms -- not all are excited by its arrival. Some of the current complaints with SUVs have to do with their ridiculous size and relative fuel inefficiency. Others criticize the vehicles as being unsafe, and certainly unnecessary, for the tasks for which they are commonly used. But even with the recent campaigns to educate the public on the possible physical and environmental risks posed by the automobiles, SUV purchases continue to be on the rise. Indeed, with car sales on the decline, and the SUV being seen as a possible savior -- or at least band-aid -- for the struggling motor industry, any movement to ban SUVs in the near future is unlikely.

A SWOT analysis is a tool that identifies internal and external factors that may affect an organization. According to Parnell (2014), a SWOT analysis allows managers to investigate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that a company may face in their environment. Strengths and weaknesses are typically internal factors; while opportunities and threats are external factors. A company’s strengths are the things that set them apart and make them different or better than anyone else in their industry. The weaknesses are the things that affect them in a negative manner that keep the company from being competitive. Development of a SWOT allows the company to identify and take advantage of the opportunity to strengthen the organization
Decline in sales of vehicles in India and Russia impact Ford’s international growth and competitiveness.
Organizational performance is a result of business interaction with its internal and external environment (Houben, Lenie & Vanhoof, 1999). There are a variety of internal and external forces that either stimulate or compromise the organization's performance in achieving objectives or goals (Houben, et al., 1999). An analysis can identify and evaluate areas within or outside of the organizations to provide information for leadership. The analysis can be done by internal personnel or external experts. Experts are often used to identify, monitor, forecast and assess environment trends (Swayne, Duncan & Ginther, 2008). Often the SWOT analysis is used to review internal and external areas in the four components; strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats.

To explain the barriers of entry, let us take the example of America's best-selling SUV in 2014 which was the Honda CR-V, for the third consecutive year followed by Ford Escape. These two companies with their immense economies of scale are posing a high barrier to entry for their share of the market. Honda CRV is able to offer the better fuel economy and safety rating without incurring a loss and maintaining the majority of the market share. This makes it difficult for firms like Volkswagen who are leaders in Europe to enter this market.
