Look Back (1) For this assignment based on a dementia case study, we were placed in a group of four. On November 18th, we presented on the subtopics, specifically, wandering and elopement of the patient to our classmates and professor. My group collaborated well with each other, but differed in opinion about the inclusion of research and online video in our presentation. As a presenter, I felt that we did not present as smoothly as we would have liked, due to nervousness and anxiety when teaching a class on dementia care. When we began, aside from what we may have felt, I believed that as a group we maintained good overall communication and had the audience engaged throughout. Similarly, as an audience I gathered a lot more information about …show more content…
At the beginning of assignment, some of the members disagreed about the time and place of meeting because of engaged with their different schedules. Another problem was different opinions about which research articles to include in the assignment. For example, one of the group members found an in-depth article regarding treatments for dementia, but another group member had to redirect her to be specific and find an article relating to our topic of wandering and elopement. We carefully examined the conflicts and through cooperation, open discussion, showing respect for the contribution of others and constructive criticism, helping us to overcome it (kozier,442). Finally, we were successful to incorporate all the resources related to dementia in our presentation by approaching conflict with the aim to resolve it and learn from it and maintain relationships. Before the assignment, I was only concerned about the cognitive impairment of the dementia patient but when I began to work on the assignment learned many complex issues and concerns the disease. Personally, before presentation I was curious and enthusiastic about the topic and my presentation style and I thought that during presentation I was fluent and tried hard to make the presentation resourceful and attractive in front of the audience. During presentation, my group members were contributing actively and share the information among the audience. As …show more content…
If I want to take care of the dementia patient I need to be familiar with that person’s individual life. When I know about the person it helps me to address the disease properly and make a plan that benefits patient care and enhances the therapeutic relationship. According to RNAO Best Practice Guideline Delirium, Dementia, and Depression in Older adult (2016), all entry level nursing programs should include specialized content about older adult that include normal aging, screening assessment and care giving strategies for delirium dementia and depression. So, when I was involved with the assignment in a group I focused on parameter of memory deficit that is specified to dementia. This helped me to analyze the data related to loss of executive functioning from the case study. For example, in the case study, the patient facing difficulty to express herself became frustrated and angry and as I get experience from the assignment I would apply resolution therapy that suggest to understand patient and acknowledge the patients feeling (BPG 124). Personally, the assignment helps me to familiarize the various stages of dementia and the related symptoms. So, in future I can analyse the ability and disability of the persons with dementia because disuse of existing abilities resulted excess disability of cognitively impaired person. (nbpg55). In group work we researched about therapeutic
Taking care of dementia patient one should have a lot of patience as in the story the author says to herself, “why I have forgo my own lunch to try and feed this woman” ( ). The author has to wait for Miss Julianne to eat her lunch first before she could go and eat her own meal. Nurses have to be very cooperative, well behavior, and caretaker. You should show empathy to your patient instead of showing sympathy like the author was concerned about Miss Julianne, and the assistant nurse tells Miss Julianne that the author “ wants to know, if you’re okay. Honey” and should be firm in your decision by using critical thinking. You should communicate with your patient and should have convincing power. The changes that I have faced are before I used to think, its easy to treat older adults but its one of the most challenging job. My mindset is completely changed and I am preparing myself how to deal with tough
Taking this into consideration the nurse began to carry out a risk assessment and care plan to address the issues recognised. According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (2015) health and social care staff should identify the specific needs of people with dementia and their carers arising from ill health, physical disability, sensory impairment, communication difficulties, problems with nutrition, poor oral health and learning disabilities. Care plans should record and address these
Dementia is a difficult disease to understand and handle. A major problem involving these patients are caregivers that are not properly trained and educated to care for people with the disease resulting in issues such as neglect and abuse.
Dementia is common among a large population of elderly people. The disease affects not only the individual diagnosed, but also the caregivers that work towards making their life comfortable in the end. Understanding and learning about the disease is crucial in helping those that experience or live with someone who has dementia. The services and support that are currently in affect for elderly people with dementia and the caregivers is poor, and ineffective because of the lack of research and information on the topic.
At the beginning I was really afraid to express my opinion about my team project, but all my team members are really friendly and willing to listen to my opinions. I really had good time while doing this project, as a communicator in my group, I made Google doc to let every member give their own opinions and that is also a good method to discuss our project online. Moreover, I designed the PowerPoint and provided lots of pictures to make our project wonderful. For our presentation, even though I felt so nervous and could not speak well on my presentation, my team members are really nice and encourage me a lot. For the team paper, I divided into four parts to discuss more details about our main points of the topic; at first I thought that it would be difficult to do this part, yet one of my team members used interesting way, Rock-paper-scissors, it is a fair way to do it, and every members are willing to do this. In short, I really enjoyed doing this project and had great time with all of my team
However, I did notice that there were a few faults in the presentation, one being a fault that I personally consider may have negatively impacted our presentation. It seems to me that I was not able to deliver the presentation to the best of my ability as I had let my nerves get the best of me when talking to the staff. The reason for this was that I was not comfortable with taking on the speaking role that I was given and that there were last minute changes made to my slides right before presenting. Bruner, (1996) stated that the learning process for staff relies on the “meaningful dialogue” that is presented by the presenters. In this case, I think that my speech was not strong enough to grab the audience’s attention, thus not being able to portray my message about what an Ofsted inspection is and what the results from an Ofsted inspection mean. Nevertheless, although I was not able to present to the quality that I had wished, the feedback received was reassuring that I had not done terribly bad. I was able to see myself grow as a presenter as I noticed that my
The participation in leisure activities, such as dance, is related with a reduced risk of development of dementia, both Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia (Verghese et al., 2003). Dementia is “a general term that describes a group of symptoms-such as loss of memory, judgment, language, complex motor skills, and other intellectual function-caused by the permanent damage or death of the brain's nerve cells, or neurons” (Alzheimer’s Foundation of America [AFA], 2015, para 1). Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia in persons over the age of 65, representing about 60 percent of all dementias. Dementia is specifically characterized by “different pathologic, or structural, changes in the brain, such as an accumulation of
Alzheimer’s disease slowly steals a person’s dignity and erases precious memories. The “Alzheimer’s Disease Guide”, found on WebMD explains that tasks become more difficult to do often leading to confusion and behavior changes. The article further explains the progression of the disease also brings hardship to family and friends (1). To best cope with Alzheimer’s we must better understand the disease.
Caring for dementia involves a lot of patience and understanding. It should be dealt with audacity and flawlessness to ensure the vulnerable adults’ well-being. Aiding at home or care home required carers to be at their best, physically and emotionally. The responsibility can be distressing but it is rewarding as well since helping dementia adults in their day to day activities is a significant matter for them. However, carers need a pause as over duty can result to substandard nursing. The big question is: who take care for the carers of people with dementia?

... and duration varies from person to person. It depends on multiple factors, including the age of diagnosis and other medical conditions. The signs and symptoms start with cognitive disturbance as all other forms of dementia begin. We should refrain from being prejudiced and judgmental because of not taking the time to truly understand this disorder and how it may affect one’s life. Education and patience are the best ways to tackle this issue. In this paper, relevant topics involving dementia were discussed. Part one covered the pathology and staging of dementia. Part two explained the most common types of dementia that many people are diagnosed with. Part three summarized the treatment methods used to manage the disorder. We should apply a professional, respectful, and empathic approach while maintaining specific culture traditions to achieve a successful outcome.
In week 7 our seminar leader allocated us into smaller groups of six to work together, get together and to start preparing for the mock debate in week 9 and the debate in week 10. When we started to get alone with each other, it was seen that it is not going to be easy to achieve our goals, not just because in our group had a strong activist, reflector, theorist and pragmatist, but we also needed to face some solvable difficulties as our first meeting of the week was cancelled by problem like the lack of communication, miscommunication and the ability to listen to another.
Making a successful public presentation or speech to an audience was a very big task for me before I joined the public speaking class. I was always frightened and very nervous. Since then I now understand the process of making a speech or a presentation including coming up with a topic and from this topic develop the main points of the speech, research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make a magnificent presentation to any audience. People in the audience might sometimes agree or disagree with my opinion or points, it was therefore necessary to communicate my information clearly to the audience without making any judgments since every person was entitled to a different opinion and views about things.
For this project we were randomly assigned groups to prepare, and present a seminar on Macbeth. During the first two days of groupwork I was becoming frustrated because I always work to the best of my ability, and some of my group members were content with a mediocre grade. By the third day of our meetings, I came to the conclusion that action needed to be taken if this seminar was going to be completed to a level of quality I was happy with. I tasked myself with delegating a section of the seminar to each member, and then met individually with each person, on my own time, to make sure that they were comfortable with what was expected of them. Following this, I hosted the presentation document so that I could scrutinize the presentation for spelling and grammar. On presentation day, this hard work paid off, as every group member did what he or she was assigned, and this competency reflected itself in our mark. Although I have always worked hard on school assignments, prior to this project I was a shy individual who had the mindset of a follower. While I learned a lot about Shakespeare in that English class, more importantly it taught me the importance of both leadership and striving to do my best, even when I am outside of my comfort
As team members we understood one another's abilities and trusted one another with the task handed too us. All of us where capable of giving the presentation all by our self since there was an ample amount of resources that SORC has to offer to students. But we divided up the topics evenly throughout the group so that no one felt left out. There was balance between the distribution of responsibility for ever member so the workload wasn’t on one person. The overall outcome of the project was that we learned a lot about SORC and how before SORC the clubs never really used the place very efficiently and it was just a space in the stamp that wasn’t used to its full potential.
