Each company or organization belongs to a market industry that includes three components, the remote environment, the industry environment and the operating environment. These factors impact the decisions that organizations make in order to provide the best services and products while maintaining a high profit for the company. Lockheed Martin is a multinational aerospace manufacturer and advanced technology company, formed in 1995 by the merger of Lockheed Corporation with Martin Marietta (Lockheed Martin, 2008). Lockheed Martin is affected by the macroeconomic environment, the economic decisions that the organization itself makes and the industry environment.

Ethics in business is a highly important concept, as it can affect a company’s profits, salaries paid to employees and CEOs, and public opinion, among many other aspects of a business. Ethics can be enforced by company policies and guidelines, set a precedent when a company is faced with an important decision, and are also evolving thanks to new technology and situations that arise due to technology usage. Businesses have a duty to maintain their ethical responsibilities and also to help their employees enforce these responsibilities in and out of the workplace. However, ethics and the foundation for them are not always black and white. There are many different ethical theories, however Utilitarianism, Kant’s Deontological ethics, and Virtue ethics are three of the most well known theories in existence. Each theory is distinct in that it has a different quality used to determine ethicality and allows for a person to choose which system of ethics works best with both the situation and his or her personal ethical preferences.

Lockheed Martin Aerospace Corporation started out as two different companies that merged together. Two brothers, Allan and Malcolm Lockheed started a company called, Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company, which they eventually changed to Lockheed Aircraft Company. Talented brothers, both mechanics, stared out of a garage at first, they had been constructing seaplanes that at the time was knows to have shattered speed and distance records for over the water flights. Martin Marietta started out known as American-Marietta and they were a production company that dealt in construction materials. It was a merger with the Glenn L. Martin Company that moved them into the aerospace industry.

I discovered how sticking to one’s morals should be the topmost priority for everyone involved in business, whether personal or professional. Regardless of what the consequences may be, the intensity of the problem, and the complexities it may bring, sacrificing one’s integrity should never be an option, as integrity goes hand-in-hand with the morals of an individual (Duggan & Woodhouse, 2011). Also, I believe that companies should place more emphasis on the moral behavior of their employees, and clear-cut policies should be set regarding such ethical situations. Tyco provides products and services across the world. The company is global and diversified providing a variety of products including electronics, healthcare, fire and security services and engineered products and services. While employing over 250,000 people worldwide they grossed approximately $40 billion in revenue in the year 2005. In 2002 Tyco was involved with the corporate scandal where the management mis-appropriated corporation funds. The previous CEO Dennis Kozlowski was convicted in 2005 on 22 counts of the 23 that he was charged with. This is an example of not only a legal issue of responsibility but also one of an ethical issue that the Tyco Corporation has had to face. In the face of the legal and ethical issues that this mishap had placed the corporation in, Tyco placed Ed Breen in as chairman and CEO. Mr. Breen joined the company in 2002 after the scandal and immediately began the rebuild of the company’s name. With the appointment of Ed Breen and his changing of the company’s ethical standards (to be discussed in the next portion of the paper) he promotes the legal responsibilities of not only the company’s employees but the responsibilities of the suppliers and buyers to report any wrong doing. Morality is normatively defined as “a code of conduct that, given specified conditions, would be put forward by all rational persons” (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Throughout history, morality or rather the idea of the ‘correct’ morality has been an important topic of discussion. How do humans acquire morality? What makes humans moral? Who in a society defines morality? In every workplace, ethical and moral behavior is expected and is the norm. Both 17th century philosopher Blaise Pascal and public relations professional Patricia Parsons believe morality should be in the workplace. Pascal crafted his life’s work, Pensées, in the 17th century. The collection was written to help remove any misunderstandings or stigma of the Christian religion. Patricia Parsons wrote Ethics in Public Relations: A Guide to Best Practice in 2008. The book explores the idea of what the ethical practices in public relations are, and provides examples and trials to prove the thesis. Therefore when looking at how morality appears in society, Pascal’s workplace will be the church, and Parsons’ will be a public relations firm. Both of these places serve the public abate in different ways. This paper will explore the guiding system for moral development and how humans gain morality as they live and experience life. These two individuals could not be more different, yet both share similar views on morality. Morality is essential for a successful professional life.
