On September 25, 2017, Lisa Gore, M.S., CCC-SLP, a clinical instructor from the Texas Tech University Health and Sciences Center, spoke to the class about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). She began by presenting a power point demonstrating the characteristics, behaviors, and strategies that are utilized with an individual on the autism spectrum scale. Ms. Gore then ended her presentation with a variety of video clips broadcasting individuals with autism interacting in different environments. The videos displayed the diversity of autism by the different behaviors and skills the individuals with autism possessed in each interaction.

The first video presented an individual named Chris, who spoke at a convention about autism. His main points covered a spectrum of different behaviors an individual can experience with autism and the proper strategies to utilize, which experts once said were disruptive and incorrect. The audience eventually uncovered that Chris is an intelligent individual with high-functioning autism that can communicate efficiently in front of a huge audience. His mother ignored the negative perspectives many experts advised and continued to motivate Chris throughout his childhood to push through the challenges he faced everyday with autism. This clip demonstrated the possibilities that can result from hard work. The next clip presented an interaction between a boy with autism and his mother. The mother talked one on one with her son about the reasoning behind him hitting her. The individual was nonverbal and could only communicate through an augmentative communication device. The device allowed the individual to pick a picture or symbol to express his voice. The interaction was challenging for the mother because the individual was distracted and only vocalized sounds. The last individual was a fourteen-year-old male named Jacob. He was interviewed by his mother to demonstrate his progress with his verbal communication. He would rapidly communicate his thoughts, causing him to slur his words and be misunderstood majority of the time.
