Life as A Princess: Grace Kelly
Even before Grace Kelly married a prince, she had the characteristics of a princess. Frank Sinatra once commented, "Grace was a princess from the moment she was born." She had remarkable elegance and sophistication that made her different from other Hollywood actresses. Some say she had a bit of fire beneath her charm. Alfred Hitchcock, who directed her in three films, called her "a snow-covered volcano". Grace was born into a family of fame and success. Her father was a wealthy bricklayer, her brother was a champion sculler, and her uncle, George Kelly was a famous playwright. They set a hard example to follow and Grace sometimes felt pressured by her family's reputation for prosperity. She lived up to and even surpassed the fame of her family members. Grace served many roles in her life as an actress, princess and mother.
Grace had a rather interesting past. In Grace's early years, she went to Catholic Ravenhill Academy in East Falls, Pennsylvania and unfortunately switched to Stevens School, a worldly academy. She was very quiet and "to herself" as a teenager, but also very popular with other people her age in school. After graduating in 1949, it was a dream of Grace's to perform on a live stage, not to star in movies or make television appearances, In New York and Colorado, Grace worked in theater and starred in "The Father" with Raymond Massey before signing with agent Edith Van Cleve. Some theater experts, including actress Helen Hayes, believed Grace wasn't suitable for performing on a live stage because of her low voice. In spite of that, Grace Kelly was determined to become successful and to move further with her career ("American Decades" 1).
Kelly's family did not agree with her becoming an actress. Even though her family had opposed her becoming an actress, Kelly became a fashion model and appeared in her first film, Fourteen Hours, in 1951 when she was 22. The following year she starred in High Noon. Her next film, Mogambo, in1953 was a drama set in the Kenyan jungle, which centers on the love triangle portrayed by Kelly, Clark Gable, and Ava Gardner. During the filming of this movie, she had an affair with Gable. Later on commenting "what else is there to do if you're alone in a tent in Africa with Clark Gable?" The movie got Kelly an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, but the award went to Donna Reed for her role in From Here to Eternity.

“There she stands, to me, a phoenix risen from her own words: calm, slow, funny, courteous, both modest and very sure of herself, intense, sharply penetrating, devout but never pietistic, downright, occasionally fierce, and honest in a way that restore to honor to the word”, this is how Sally Fitzgerald described her dear friend Mary Flannery O’Connor. (xii) Not to long ago, I read my first Mary Flannery O’Connor story and I came to view Mary Flannery O’Connor as an artist whose key subject was grace, but what are these stories, these works of art truly about, what is Flannery O’ Connor trying to tell the readers. In order to interpret a story though the eyes of an author like Flannery O’Connor you must first look through the eyes of the author. You must see what he/she sees. It would be arrogant to believe that a person can truly understand another by studying them, but I have learned a great deal in trying to do so. Mary Flannery O’Connor wrote about grace and salvation, and has taught me about finding truth; I attribute the lessons she has taught me to, the way she viewed herself, the way others viewed her, her writings, and many other effects.
When many people think of an “It Girl” they think of someone as luxurious, Clara Bow was one of the very first “It Girl” of the 1920’s, yet she was not luxurious at the start. Before, Clara Bow was considered a tomboy with her ragged and dirty clothes, she would always play in the streets with boys, no girls were willing to play around with her. Later, she entered into a contest The Fame and Fortune, winning the contest; she was brought into Hollywood by B.P Schulberg. During her acting career she also developed into a flapper; flappers were 1920’s women who dressed up in short dresses wore makeup and had short hair; they also smoked and drank at night clubs. Her career had to come to an end after

Disney princesses are fun for all ages, but their target audience is young children and “as children grow and develop, they can be easily influenced by what they see and hear”. Therefore, what they see and hear in Disney movies leaves an impression on them. The first princess, Snow White, was created in a time where each gender and race had a specific role in society. Recently, many believe that Disney has come a long way in regards to gender and race since Snow White, as several multi-cultural protagonists have been introduced subsequently, and gender roles do not appear to be as stereotypical as they once were. However, many of the apparent innocent messages about race and gender in these movies, can be exposed as otherwise. Despite their mask of progression, Disney princesses still have the potential to corrupt the minds of young children through sexism and racism.
Judy Garland definitely had her ups and downs on her way to stardom. Garland was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Her real name is Frances Gumm, which later changed when she became a star. Her childhood was not what you could call perfect, she was forced into singing and acting by her mother. Her mother was very gifted and had many talents, when Garland was only 2 her mother saw that she had talent and made her perform all around the country. They had many other family problems due to her father's homosexuality and were many times forced to leave certain areas because of this, they sometimes even had to live out of their car because they had no where else to go. Finally Garland was signed by MGM and this was a huge step in her life and also her families. Soon after getting signed her father passed aways and this took a huge toll on Garland’s family life and career. After her father’s death and she got back to working she was faced with the problem of people telling her that her weight was a problem which s...
As many of us know, our world today is not short of sarcasm. Many times sarcasm can be funny but other times it can cause harm. But in Anne Sexton’s poem, she uses sarcasm to throw her audience back to actuality, even a midst a fairytale element. In Anne Sexton’s poem, Cinderella she uses sarcasm and a basis of the true tale to make what many would call a “mockery” of the original Grimm Tale. Sexton does not refer to the Grimm brothers in her poem, for she considers this re-telling her own creation, uniquely by using irony to her advantage. As an audience we can relate to how and why Sexton takes much from the original versions, but we find that her interpretation brings a different approach. Sexton felt the original versions held no light to reality, so she changed the shallow premise of the original Cinderella bringing all the unrealistic morals in the story to the surface. The author's style, tone, and language helps to convey her sarcastic approach and differentiate between gritty reality and the ideal of fairy tale endings.

Over the years, Disney has presented many movies to their audience—most having a Princess as the protagonist. These movies became a babysitter for most parents in the early stages of their child’s life. Most people found these movies as relatively harmless. The obvious assumption about the Disney Princesses is that they only desire true love since almost every movie ends in romance. Parents just viewed these movies as romantic movies on a child’s level. However, these movies were not solely intended for an audience of an age that can be counted on both hands. They were intended to speak to “an intelligent and active audience” (Sumera 40). However, there are many people who disagree with the ways of the Disney Princess movies. The disagreements lie within the portrayal of women gender roles in these movies. It is argued that Disney portrays women as a being nurturing individuals without any control over their identity. The women are unable to think for themselves, because they are uneducated, and they are quick to fall in love with the first man that pays them any attention. However, this is not completely true. The people that are against the portrayal of women in the Disney movies are failing to recognize the underlying concepts in these movies. For example, Belle, in Beauty and the Beast, was well educated, Mulan went to war despite the consequences, and Merida, in Brave, stood up to her mother in refusal to marry. The Disney Princesses desired intelligence, bravery, strength, and independence—not true love’s kiss.

Born Audrey Kathleen Ruston on May 4, 1929 to parents Joseph Hepburn-Ruston and Ella van Heemstra, Audrey lived with her two half-brothers, in Brussels, Belgium. She and her brothers lived a luscious life as young children, seeing that her mother was a Dutch Baroness who was descended from French and English kings and her father a well-known business man and banker. Audrey’s father later appended Hepburn to his surname, thus Audrey becoming Hepburn-Ruston (Biography of Audrey Hepburn.) In 1935 Joseph and Ella divorced, and Audrey recalled it to be one of the most traumatic events of her life. In the early years after the divorce, Audrey and her mother lived in England, but with the outbreak of World War II, her mother moved them to the Netherlands; this area was neutral and her mother’s home country. Much to her mother’s dismay, on May 10, 1940, Nazi Germans invaded the Netherlands and Audrey’s family, consisting of Audrey’s mother and her two half-brothers were forced to endure hardships of war (Audrey Hepburn 1929-1993.) Audrey suffered severely during the war, and became increasingly malnourished (Facts about Audrey Hepburn.)
