I. Introduction Learning is a way of life. At every moment throughout the day we should attempt to learn something new. Most of us learn in different ways and for different reasons. The way we learn is often a reflection of our personalities. Because we are different and learn different we have to also be taught in different ways. Teaching in different ways can be a challenge; however, it can be rewarding for the student and the teacher. The educator has to make an environment that is conducive to learning. This may be difficult but when you understand the many ways of learning and the types of learners, one will have a better understanding of how to achieve the best learning environment.

Students that are blessed with teachers that use their preferred method of learning tend to learn quicker, interact more and retain the given information better. The importance of the having different learning theories is that, what one theory does not cover the other one will cover. This provides several ways a teacher can present information to give each student their best chance for academic success. Once it is recognized by the teacher he or she can develop lesson plans in diverse ways to appeal to several students learning styles within the classroom which adds to meaningful learning. Without this connection students and teachers will experience disconnect that will prohibit effective learning. I thrive on a socially related learning atmosphere and need a well-defined job description. Parkers Learning Styles Profile tells me almost the opposite. Technology and Research were weaker areas. I had strengths in many other categories among them are; Career Skills, Time Management, Note-taking, Written Communication, Reading, Listening and Stress. I know that with my preferred learning styles it is harder for me to take on-line course and it creates a challenge that I use to improve my secondary learner
Learning is important for countless reasons, the most important reason being that it molds a person into who he or she is. What people choose to learn, and also what they choose not to, create the core of their opinions as individuals. Though people do not admit it or openly declare it, it is fair to say almost everyone is self centered. Because of this, and the fact that learning dramatically affects a person, learning is not only thrilling, but also expressive. Furthermore, since learning is expressive, its meaning varies from person to person, therefore making each person’s experiences with learning unique and life changing.
Learning is viewed largely as a matter of trial and error: In any new situation, people try a variety of responses, increasing those that lead to desirable consequences and leaving unproductive ones behind.
Classrooms of today are full of students with varying learning abilities and styles, therefore teachers are put in a position to involve each of their students equally so that everyone has the greatest chance of success in their learning. There are many different ways teachers are able to set up the learning environment in order to maximise teaching and learning and cater for the diverse needs of their students. I will attempt to discuss in detail some of these strategies and unpack the potential advantages and difficulties that follow.
Teachers use theories, models of learning, and professional standards to shape their teaching practices. There are several learning theories that have evolved the educational field. Theories guide instruction and the beliefs of the teachers. Teachers use these theories, standards, and personal beliefs to develop goals in order to improve teaching effectiveness.
Learning theories also ensures that learners are in a position to change their perspective in terms of behavior change. The learners can shape and modify their behavior through the systematic changes which occur in their environment. As changes occur in their environment, the way they respond to the changes also changes. Moreover, the learning theories also explain why a number of individuals undergo through familiar environmental changes to help the learner understand their environment better .

With the amount of knowledge in the world, one will never truly have learned all that there is to know. Learning starts from the moment of birth and ends with the last breath of life. For many people, learning takes place through classes in school. Yet, school is only one of many places in which one can acquire knowledge or skills. Through areas of cross country, Leo Club, and Mun Lun, I have acquired a variety of knowledge and skills.
Research shows that the learning environment encompasses more than just the classroom that learning and teaching takes place. Many factors contribute to a learning environment, including the students, teachers, parents, school staff, policy makers, specialists, support staff, community members and the different learning spaces and resources available. This reflective journal will discuss some ways that teachers can set up the learning environment to maximise teaching and learning and some potential advantages and difficulties for me as a new teacher.
In closing, implementing only one theory of learning can be limiting to the success of students in a classroom setting. A more effective approach would be “draw from two or more theoretical perspectives… to better capture the complex nature of human thinking and learning” (Ormrod, 2012). According to Howard Gardner, there are multiple intelligences in human individuals that are based on biological and cultural elements (Brualdi, 1996). Since each of the intelligences work independently of each other, but also complement each other individuals learn, teachers should teach accordingly (Brualdi, 1996).
There are many very useful online tools that can contribute to student learning. Things like Kahoot and Quizlet have played a big role in promoting student learning. In fact, I used to have Quizlet’s in my high school Spanish class, and they helped, tremendously. Our teacher would take us to the lab and we’d individually work on the assigned quiz. It was a really great experience for me and my classmates. I would recommend the use of these online tools for every teacher to use because as a student, they really help give the best learning experience.
Each of the three learning theories, Cognitivism, Constructivism, and Behaviorism, has worth and merit in my opinion. Yet, each one has its own unique qualities with one common factor, the learning process. It seems to me that the best teacher is one who would utilize all the theories of learning. However, if I look closely, I am most likely favoring one or two more than the others in my own instructional methods. I read the brief definition of these three theories and realized that I needed to examine a more in-depth explanation of each of them. The theory of cognitivism focuses on the mind of the learner
There are several potential factors that affect individual differences and the ways in which various students learn. My reflection paper will compare similarities and differences between mastery learning and discovery learning. I will also explore the advantages and disadvantages of each learning style and give classroom examples of each. Both mastery and discovery learning principles agree that learning is an active concept and that learning styles vary across students. Both methods also encourage mastery of information and application to problem-solve but the processes of obtaining this level of skill differs across methods.
Teachers have the unique opportunity to support students’ academic and social development at all levels of schooling (Baker et al., 2008; Bronfenbrenner, 1979; Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 1998; McCormick, Cappella, O’Connor, & McClowry, in press). According to the attachment theory (Ainsworth, 1982; Bowlby, 1969), positive relationships enable learners to feel safe and secure in their learning environments which helps providing scaffolding for social and academic skills. Learners who have positive teacher-student relationships may have the feeling of closeness, warmth and positivity which will increase their learning ability (Hamre & Pianta 2001). Students will use this relationship as a secure base for them to explore the classroom both academically and socially. Positive relationship with an adult may protect against the negative outcomes associated with children who stay in poverty (Gallagher 2014). According to Murray and Malmgren (2005), low-income students who have strong teacher-student relationships have higher academic achievement than peers who do not have a positive relationship with a teacher. Therefore, if a learner is born in a rural area, he/she may still able to have great learning capacity if he/she has a positive relationships with everyone in the
Through classroom observation I was exposed to the different methods of teaching a lesson. The methods of teaching depends on how will the teacher execute the lesson well. I learned that modern learners today needs both modern and traditional way of teaching as for them to fully learned the lesson in a meaningful way.
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
