Reflective Essay: I Learned from the mistakes
Having true understanding and knowledge takes practice and dedication. Like anything that has become perfected it was first failed many times before it was considered "perfect". The idea behind being a master at any skill or trade is just the fact that several tries were attempted and failed before the correct decisions were made and put into motion to perfect it. There are millions of examples of success stories and world changing events that can be compared and all will have the same thing in common which is the failed attempts that were made before they reached their perfected form. No one would say the challenge was welcomed, but they were what made the experience worth it. Reflecting on

I've improved overall in my research paper writing methods, and over the course of the summer have gained another useful set of skills to further my college education. If you are going to take a class be prepared to learn from it. Have an attitude of trying to perfect the skills that are going to be taught or else the knowledge won't stick with you as well. The true purpose of learning to write research papers, cite sources, write essays, use correct grammar and punctuation are all means of preparing a person to have the intermediate skills for a professional or business-setting job, if you were ever to be at one. This class greatly improved my confidence in being able to write a clear and well understood research paper, as well as, retaught me methods of English writing I had long forgotten. This reflective essay will describe my personal experience …show more content…
The new assignments would follow the hip-hop theme, but also implement the base form of music, poetry. I was taken back by another challenge that would test me, but also help me to reach an even higher level of thinking. The assignments were fairly easy, as they were mostly compare and contrast activities with the basic task of writing essay's. The literary devices activity actually refreshed my mind to grade-school when I was first starting to write more in-depth paper with better understanding. Like all new things being taught they require the memory or foundation of an old structure. This would be useful in my further sharpening my writing skills, as it was practice, and practice makes perfect. The final module two assignment was to analytically compare and contrast two hip-hop songs with the same name. Nas's and Kurtis Blow's "If I ruled the world" songs were two very different message-filled songs. My demonstration of the research methods I had just learned in module one would be tested. Implementing in-text citations, referencing a musical source, and work-citing a song were all new method's I was able to use and add to my skill-set thanks to this module in this course. I believe the assignment reflected my knowledge gained as it was given a B+, which was better than that last providing evidence of my
Assignment 3A reflective letter allowed me to express how the process went when writing my research paper. Writing this letter also allowed me to know what could have been done differently when writing the research essay and future assignments. Another assignment that allowed me to reflect on my writing process over time was the Literary Narrative. For this assignment I created a poem about my reading and writing process from the age three years old until now. I enjoyed this assignment and was able to share my creative writing style while expressing how much I value reading and writing
Reflection, as explained by Moon (2013), is the process of looking back on an event or experience and thinking about it and learning from it. Reflection, which is learning through experience, is not a new concept. As humans, we naturally reflect on our surroundings and experiences on a day to day basis in order to make sense of them. (Norman, Vleuten and Newble, 2002). In a professional context, reflation is vital for a practitioner to learn and improve their practice. By using their own experiences, practitioners are able to analysis, and in turn, adapt or improve specific areas of practice
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
Finally, I learned how to be more responsible by myself. In my last classes, my teachers were technically always there to tell me step by step what to do and how to do my assignments. In a certain way, it made me kind of lazy and entirely dependent of my teachers. However in this course it was not like that; instead, my instructor just gave me the assignments, instructions, and deadlines, and I must write my essays and summited it on time. This absence of guide absolutely made me to react that it was time to me to do my assignments by myself, demonstrate what I know, and ask for help just whenever it is
Overall, I found this assignment to be extremely fun and interesting. It was definitely a learning experience for my sister and I. Even though I didn’t take the results of
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “For everything you have missed, you have gained something else, and for everything you gain, you lose something else.” In his novel, Great Expectations, Charles Dickens exemplifies Ralph’s belief and conveys that when a person has gone wrong in life, a trauma or pain can help him or her return to a better path. All through the novel, characters such as Pip, Miss Havisham, and Magwitch illustrate this theme through the decisions they made in life and where those decisions took them.
This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
Throughout this course, we had multiple assignments that were aimed at improving us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning. Our weekly craft lessons have introduced us to multiple writing strategies. These strategies have helped turn my papers from elementary papers that were written below my expected grade level to papers more on par with my peers.
Especially with the help of my professor Ms. Piper. I was still having trouble on material on writing, but she helped me by teaching us the writing process, how to revise our drafts, and how to use outlines to help us. She has also taught us ways of breaking down paragraphs in piece of writing to help us understand what we are reading about. I feel with this new approach it opened my eyes on a way to help me excel on my writing, and reading. I am an excellent writer and reader than I was before.
Reflection is turning experience into Learning. Reflection is a conscious, dynamic process of thinking about, analysing, and learning from an experience that gives insight into self and practice.
“The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than upon mere survival” (Aristotle, n.d.) Reflection is a process that begins with looking back on a situation, thinking about it, learning from it and then using the new knowledge to help you in similar situations in the future. We need to evaluate through reflection to determine whether change is needed. We can then decide what action is needed and what we should do the next time we are faced with a similar situation. It might not necessarily be something you have done wrong, it may well be you were happy with the outcome of a situation you had some input into and would do again.
Reflection is like looking into a mirror at yourself, worried or looking back on experiences of what you are feeling and thinking. “It is a process of learning and developing through self-awareness” (Lowe et al 2007). Boud, Keough and Walker’s definition states that you should capture the moment, ponder about it, examine the situation over, analyse the situation. And to improve the situation, act on it ( Keough and Walker, 1985). Reflection can be defined as a positive or negative experience, not necessarily critical but relevant to the situation in work practice. Analysing the situation from one experience to small parts of the experience
Reflection Reflection can be defined as a result of two types of actions: Routine action – occurs through ‘take for granted’ everyday realities of life. It allows you to concentrate on developing other aspects of your life, making you a more effective and efficient decision-maker. Reflective action – is weighing up all aspects of the situation and making a conscious and informed decision about what to do. It means taking active control over what you do and how you do it (Maslin-Prothero, 2005). Natious (2012) defines reflective practice as the process involved in practice settings; reflection in this sense emphasises a thoughtful approach to understanding experience, whether in real time or retrospectively.
I feel as though this class has helped me become a more polished and professional writer. When I first entered English 110, I was extremely unsure and lacked confidence in my writing. I believe that this point can be partly attributed to the fact that I had always had my instructors holding my hand and helping me through the writing process in high school. My senior English teacher always reminded us that college would be much more challenging than her class was and then she would go on to tell us stories of professors who gave out zeros for tiny oversights within a paper. This combined with general apprehension about college life left me terrified. I had always been a strong writer in high school; I know how to form an argument and support
