In the article, “Leadership That Empowers: How Strategic Planning relates to Followership.” Brumm, & Drury, (2013), investigate the connection between leadership planning and its effect on followership. During the previous class much of the discussion centered on empowerment. It was clear that one of the attributes of a competent director is the ability to empower members. This article examined the outcome of strategic planning and its effects on followers.
According to Burns (1978) “Followers need leaders and leaders need followers” (as cited in
Brumm & Drury 2013, p.17). It concluded that followers felt empowered due to comprehensive planning. The study did not include other variables such as leadership styles. Brumm, C, explained that, he did not include management styles because that dealt with getting people to feel hyped up or emotionally connected to the task. Whereas planning gives followers a clear map to complete the task which was the type of empowerment he was referring to. (Personal communication, March 31, 2014)
It is difficult to look at strategic leadership and the ability to empower others from such a small viewpoint. Leadership has many dimensions and has to be analyzed from a broader perspective. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
Often at time’s society forces us to make choices we would rather not make, mainly because one is different or a different color. In today’s organization, strategic leadership is required for the drive to the top, the leaders believe in innovation and change. Therefore, they set forth by investing their strength to achieve success. Strengths Based Leadership by Tom Rath and Barry Conchie discussed the three keys to becoming a more effective leader through strengths, working with the right people of equal strength, seeking the right people on the team and achieving the basic need of a leadership. The strength of a leader is in his communication, a great communicator is one who thinks ahead of time in making sure things are done thoroughly. However, a leader’s strength can be categorized as a visionary thinker. The strength of a visionary thinker is one that understands the purpose of a project and work effectively to accomplish the project in a timely manner. According to (Rath & Conchie 2009, p.13), “Leaders can learn to develop certain skills which can help them become more effective, efficient,...

According Hughes, Beatty, and Dinwoodie’s ( 2014) work on strategy, all areas of an organization need to collaborate with each other to help bring strategy to fruition. They mentioned four elements of leadership strategy. (1) Leadership Drivers of Business Strategy. This is the identification of and the preparing of leaders to implement strategy. Certain skills, abilities and resources need to be in place prior to a strategies’ roll out. When the correct leaders have the proper skill sets are in place coupled with the backing of the organization this may create a dynamic situation. Hughes et al. (2014) describes these as “levers- that if pulled will catapult the organization toward success” (p. 236). (2)Leadership Culture, as mentioned

The role of leadership can impact an organization performance in many ways. Excellent leadership can propel a company to the fortune five hundred list. For Example, Harpo Incorporated Oprah Winfrey’s company is a successful business that has made billions of dollars over the years. The business consists of several different entities such as the Oprah Show, Oprah Winfrey Network, and The Dr. Phil Show to name a few. This could not have been accomplished with a weak or uneducated leader. Many years ago I heard her give advice to the Williams Sisters. The a...

but we recognize it in action. This type of leadership involves microscopic perceptions and macroscopic expectations. Volumes have been written on the subject, which may in fact contribute to the difficulty in grasping the concept. One finds it confusing and sometimes conflicting information on this blended concept that involves the vagaries of strategy and the behavioral art of leadership. Sometimes the methods and models used to explain it are more complicated than the concept and practice of strategic leadership.
