However she grew up there since the age of five as a permanent resident who never became Italian. She further traveled to the United States on a student visa, a work visa, obtained her green card, and finally became a U.S. citizen. She holds a bachelor of sciences degree in mechanical engineering from Tufts University and a master’s degree in management from Kellog/University. Here is how she reached the top: a Sales Rep at Westinghouse where she discovered her passion for business and a Management Trainee at General Electric. She joined DuPont as a Marketing Manager in 1988 where she quickly moved up the corporate ladder and ultimately became the first female CEO of the 210 year old organization in January 1, 2009. Away from work, she married and had three children. Ms. Kullman travels the world to promote face to face relationships with her enormous corporate team but believes her own family is the most important. She is the 19th executive to lead the company founded in 1802. Prior to becoming CEO, Ms. Kullman was president of the company from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, 2008. In 2012, Ms. Kullman was ranked at number five in Fortune’s list of Most Powerful Women. Though DuPont is known for its dominance in chemicals, since becoming CEO Ms. Kullman has pushed the 210 year old company into unexpected new businesses (World of CEOs Dossiers, 2012). This may be measured by a company’s gross profitability, employee engagement or overall customer satisfaction. In an effort to examine various types of leadership styles, I have conducted interviews with two individuals that are or have been previously tasked with leading their teams and their company towards success.

According to Toseland and Rivas (2005), group dynamics are “the forces that result from the interactions of group members” (p. 64). These forces refer to either the negative or positive influences towards meeting members’ socioemotional needs as well as goal attainment within a group (Toseland & Rivas, 2005), like within my class work group experience. Some of dynamics that continue to emerge and develop in my group is the effective interaction patterns and strong group cohesion, which has generated positive outcomes and group achievement thus far.

Dynamics are the forces at play that influence the behavior of a group. The feelings of inclusion or exclusion and who is responsible for what or how happy they are with it are some of the dynamics. How the meeting place or office is laid out, openly or as cubicles can affect how a team communicates. The enabling of hidden or side communication verses open group communication can adversely affect a team and the attitude. Rewards and recognition for great ideas and jobs well done should be given fairly and equally. No one should seem to be getting more privileges than others in a team. This could harbor feelings of resentment with the other members of that team. There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
