James Kouzas and Barry Posner state, “Leadership is important, not just in your career and within your organization, but in every sector, in every community, and in every country” (2012, pp. 7). This quote is a good example of the significance that leadership can have not only on one’s personal life, but in their professional life in terms of how and with who they interact with. When it comes to my own leadership skills, there are three specific areas that I could personally improve on: communication, looking at the future, and relationship building. These are three areas that are important when it comes to understanding my own leadership style and how they relate to two of Kouzas and Posner’s leadership components: Model the Way and Inspire a Shared Vision (2012).
Communication is an important area of leadership, because it is essential to be able to effectively communicate in both one’s personal and professional life. When it comes to Model the Way, relationship building can help give others a reason to care. By forging relationships, as a leader it can help bring teams or close one’s together. This in turn, can enable those one interacts with to model the way things should be handled when it comes to any situation at hand. In turn, relationship building relates to Inspire a Shared Vision, because it makes a strong leader take the time to listen to others. It is important to take the concerns of others to heart, because that can help create stronger relationships. This can allow others to then feel any passion that the leader has which can make the commitment to succeed
The topic of leadership has been explored and written about by thousands of authors who are considerably more qualified than I am to write about the subject. However, I’ve always maintained that developing, evolving and articulating one’s own leadership philosophy is an essential part of a professional’s growth. Through academics and experience, I’ve concluded that leadership is a “soft” skill, more art than science, and that leadership principles can be universally applied. Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
When considering the term management, there has always been a common miss conception that this automatically makes an individual a leader. Leadership is only a single element of the management role. Many times managers are more comfortable utilizing a particular leadership style. While this may work well the majority of the time, certain employees or situations may require a different approach. Good leadership requires that the individual recognize the need for change to motivate their employees to accomplish the task at hand or to reach common goals. Understanding the importance of leadership is essential. However, the key element to focus on is what steps can be taken to improve one’s leadership capabilities. For many individuals this may be a difficult question to answer and may only be possible through self-assessment and reflection.
Let´s focus on communication, specifically listening. , As employees each of you have a leadership role based on your positions. In these positions you are required to take instructions, present guidance, make decisions, and implement policy. If you cannot listen effectively, you will miss critical instructions, mislead guidance, make less informed decisions, and hopefully never implement the wrong policies.

When in a leadership role, it is important to consider both the task and relationship aspects of a situation. Both of these aspects are essential in order to achieve the goal successfully. Task aspects are more or less directly related to achieving the end goal. It incorporates the actions required from a leader’s followers in order to achieve the desired results. It is much more geared towards performance than the relationship aspects are. Looking at the relationship side of leadership, it focuses more so on the followers and their well-being.
